Not my favorite Zelda, but she actually had some authority to her. Most versions of Zelda are supposed to be royalty but never seem to wield any sort of military power. She actually commanded her armies for a while, before surrendering because the enemy army was too powerful.
Some versions of Zelda will do more than just waiting to be rescued. Sheik was always guiding Link, saving Ruto, and doing other heroic stuff behind the scenes. Wind Waker Zelda actually helped you fight Ganondorf. Twilight Princess Zelda would fire arrows at Ganondorf. Spirit Tracks Zelda also helped you make the final killing blow on the last boss.
...but probably the ultimate version was Hyrule Warriors Zelda, who was a playable character, would purposefully conceal her identity as Sheik, and commanded armies.
But Twilight Princess Zelda was ok. I thought it was quite humbling where she got her super light arrows, and then bowed in humility asking Link for his strength.

...hard to say, but I think the cartoon Zelda & Link are probably the best couple. I tried to watch the series a few years ago, it was painfully corny, but looking at it from a distance the characters had a ton of fire in them. The Zelda in that series had way more sass than Tetra, who was probably the Zelda in the games with the most attitude.
The cartoon Zelda would go off on adventures with Link, use bows, items, and sometimes even Link's sword. Regularly uses Triforce of Wisdom for magic! Would actually wear a swimsuit because she wasn't a prude. Sometimes she and Link would sneak off and make out. Sometimes she would dangle herself / kisses as a reward for Link to do what she wants him to do. Other times she'd get pissed off at Link and give him shit duties like cleaning the kitchen or outright slap him if he was too rude. As for duties as a princess she didn't command armies, but at one point she was courting this suitor prince from another land for diplomatic relations...and to spite Link into jealousy.
Link's attitude can pretty much be summed up by the image at . Yeah he always chasing Zelda's tail, but he's also the kingdom's best fighter & knows it.
In the series he & Zelda are always saving eachother, making the other jealous, always have this on or off love/hate relationship. Last episode Ganon seems to kill Link, Zelda cries over his death. Turns out he's kind of "cursed" (more like dead but ghost is still there). Zelda goes into Ganon's dungeon to lift curse, and turns out the reason she can still see Link is because she loves him.
Way more character and drama than the games, just for Zelda alone. Even reversal of Knight saving Princess trope. Granted it's not as grand of a plot as "divine goddess turns human, has reincarnated hero fall in love with her to manipulate him, to then defeat timeless evil" that is Skyward Sword's plot, but cartoon Zelda has more drama & character

and if anybody's wondering what's going on, Ganon created a doppelganger of Zelda to both seduce Link and to steal Triforce of Wisdom.
Story-wise it had a direct affect on the protagonist so it carried more weight. Versus when Zelda becomes a puppet boss (like in Twilight Princess or arguably Spirit Tracks), it doesn't really impact the protagainist who just attaacks Zelda like any other boss without any repurcussion (not even a fear of "don't use sword you might kill her"). Hyrule Warriors had something similar, where an enemy impersonated Zelda and was commanding her army...but that didn't really impact protagonists who just treated impostor Zelda as another boss since it was a fake.

What I thought was really endearing was when you go to the fishing house ran by Hena, and if you stare at the picture on the wall of Iza then Hena would jealous. Also, if you looked at Hena's pictures, Hena would tell you to stop gawking at the pictures and look at her, since the real deal is just a few feet away. It's SUPPOSED to make you the wisest being on the planet, but Zelda never really uses it. Some say it can also allow Zelda to bend time, like sending Link backwards in time at the end of OoT.
The writing is sadly not that well done. Too often they just use it as a mcguffin plot device that must be protected from being used by the villain, and practically all the other times they treat it like it doesn't exist or shouldn't be used with like 3 exceptions Used to destroy Demise, but then nobody thinks to use it when the Demise in the past is unsealed. Wind Waker's Daphnes uses it to FLOOD the rest of Hyrule but wish for a future for Zelda/Link.
Link Between Worlds they use it to remake the inverted Triforce that's an alternate dimension's Triforce which was somehow destroyed
It kind of cheapens the Triforce when the villain is the only one who uses it to do stuff like remake the entire world, but the heroes have it all the time but never use it.
Link's Triforce of Courage is arguably the most useless out of the three, it just gives him endless bravery. Though some theorize that it gives him unlimited lives, or allows him to rewind time whenever he dies so he can keep trying something dangerous until he succeeds.

I think the problem with this is simply that it would portray her as having too much competence, which isn't appealing to the audience they were targeting with SS and BOTW Zelda. Yeah, that is an issue any writer deals with. The more competent you make a (supporting) character, the less plausible a villain will overcome that competence to create conflict, and without conflict you don't have a story to tell.
I don't mind the damsel in distress trope, though there are others in the west who would not stop screeching about it and patriarchy nonsense. I think the Zelda creators said in interviews that there's mild pressure from the west to always make Zelda a stronger and stronger character (so they made Spirit Tracks Zelda posses armor).
Personally I'm just loving these bizarre japanese stories, and hope western harpy women don't influence them any.
