Splatoon 1 and 2 sold gangbusters on the Wii U and even more on the Switch Horizon Zero Dawn hit 10 mill, likely will have a PS5 sequel Destiny 1 and 2, as much as this game is trash it sold like fucking crazy
These are basically the only high selling new IPs of the entire 8th generation of gaming. Expect Cyberpunk 2077 to immediately skyrocket close to 20 mill sales at the start of gen 9 to make it one of the best selling new IPs in gaming, likely a cross-gen title.
Astral Chain is doing alright right now but the sales are not monstrous, August is just a slow sales month. It will fail to chart at all given the madness of September and probably only rake in a few millions sales by the end of the year.
Why is it that in the industry today, only sequels and remakes seem to thrive while very few new IPs break ground?
>Astral Chain is doing alright Didn't it just hit #1 on the UK charts
For a Platinum game that is a huge fucking deal dude. Especially a new IP
Matthew Stewart
No onr is making new games, its not just new IPs. Theyre either using new art assets to remake old games on new engines, or using new art assets to male new games off the engine of another nee game. Its the byproduct of californication of an industry. All they do is design and marketing, and they can only survive in an industry where someone else makes the new shit for them to rip repaint and remarket.
There's not that much to be created & creation needs talent. Video Games is also a medium that flourishes in Evolution rather than Innovation/Creation. There are more best games that are sequels & improvements upon given titles rather than first shots, and for good reason.

>Dragon Ball FighterZ Dragon Ball is an established property, it doesn't belong in this list at all.
Joshua Smith
UK is not that strong this month. It only sold like 10k copies. They're saving their money for FIFA next month.
Astral Chain is doing alright, but it's not going to end up being a huge title in terms of sales. I will give you Sekiro, Bloodborne, Shovel and Hollow Knight though. Sekiro and Bloodborne could just be reduced to "Miyazaki directed Soulsborne games" though. Also there have been millions of Dragon ball games.

>These are basically the only high selling new IPs of the entire 8th generation of gaming. PUBG, Overwatch, Bloodborne, Sekiro
John Hughes
It's too risky for big publishers though there's plenty of successful new indie IPs, Hollow Knight and A Hat in Time being good examples

UK charts are meaningless, it's too small a region to extrapolate from. Additionally "#1 in the charts" doesn't inherently mean high sales, as ranking can be heavily impacted by if other games release alongside it or not. Considering there were no large console releases in the same week as Astral Chain besides I guess Control, I wouldn't put too much weight on it.
Not trying to shit on Astral Chain or the UK here (I am literally in the UK and enjoying Astral Chain, even). Just saying that that statement isn't a "big deal" at all depending on context.

Dragonball is an established franchise but FighterZ is a new IP with its own unique mechanics and gameplay. Simply using an established franchise does not equal guaranteed success. See: Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.

>Sekiro/Bloodborne Spiritual successor to Souls franchise >Horizon/Destiny/Splatoon Mentioned >Shovel Knight Highly derivative of retro platformers, such as Duck Tales >Hollow Knight Just a Metroidvania, you might as well call Bloodstained novelty at this point >Astral Chains Borrows heavily from other titles made by Platinium >DB FighterZ Basically like every other 2D Tag Team Fighter with assists I'm going to take that assumption for you & OP but if thats not your thought process feel free to not feel concerned but if a setting or story change is all it takes to create innovation then you people are faggots throwing hissy fits over nothing. Would you call a basically reskinned version of Mario innovation just because it's aesthetic different or it tries to tell a semblance of a story? It's the same fucking game at its core.

>derivative >borrows are you retarded? everything borrows from something else. New franchise =/= completely original mechanics.
Hudson Perez
Dying Light was a very successful new ip

Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight are very unique games and Silksong is going to be even more unique, idk user, Astral Chain also combines detective stuff that deviates it from every other platinum game, the combat is like V in DMC5 but good.
Carson Flores
Bloodborne and Sekiro could easily be called Darksouls: Victorian and Darksouls: Samurai and nobody would even see the difference
Nicholas Jones
While I don't entirely agree with that to begin with, it doesn't matter. They are separate franchises.
From software made one franchise, Demonsouls, and then made 5 sequels of it calling them different, but gameplay and atmosphere is all the same, nothibg you do in those games is different from what you do in darksouls.
Jackson Wood
>Sekiro has the same gameplay and atmosphere as Demon's souls
