I never finished my full playthough of all the endings (I need to at some point) but I agree from a gameplay standpoint. The combat is really lackluster by Platinum's standards. The open world also feels half-assed and kind of unneeded. Graphically and artistically the game looks worse than Astral Chain, and it runs pretty poorly on PC to boot. The setting, story and characters were all far better than AC though, which is basically what the game is remembered for.

Loving the game so far. My main issues with it are the platforming (the chain jump can be super wonky at times), and feeling weird about the legions. I'm not sure why, but their use makes me feel kind of bad, unlike Pokemon or other similar settings where the partners have a choice, these things are literally bound and enslaved to you and it just feels weird to me.

I was expecting one of those "this sentient being doesn't want to help but you're special and it'll start bonding with you" cliche stories to be honest.

This ability is fucking amazing on the dog legion if you combine it with self destruct abilities. Spam the flick towards an enemy to use up meter quickly, when it reaches 0% he'll stick to them while doing a buzzaw sommersault and explode when he's done. You don't have to wait for you meter to get back to 100% if you hit an enemy, so you can just spam explosions over and over again.

It feels so cool to do things. Obviously it's nowhere near as mechanically complex as DMC5, but when things go right it looks and feels so good.

Not as complex as Dante, but I'd say it has more going on than Va and maybe Nero as well. I like the take on the action genre. Obviously the combat is the highlight, but the investigations and general police tasks are a fun divergence that feel like they give the game some unique flavour without making the game feel bogged down in unnecessary content.

I just didn't really understand how it was meant to be played. Should I be drawing with the gamepad touch screen or the right stick? I just didn't think its systems were particularly well explained. I'm probably going to try it again because I like Kamiya's other games and Platinum as a whole, I just couldn't connect with it. Also I'd say Astral Chain is kinda close to Nier but with less RPG elements and a combat system that has more going on. I didn't care much more Nier A's gameplay and I think this is much stronger in that regard.

Those pauses are for sync attacks with your legio. You generally don't want to do EVERY sync attack because it can leave you open, but the pause still comes in handy for gauging who all is attacking.

There are definitely frame drops when there's tons of enemies or when a lot of stuff dies like that. Happens a lot in file 12 since they throw lots of enemies at you.

Didn't play Transformers. I would say that Astral Chain plays like W101 if the combat was redesigned by someone who wasn't good at W101. So you kind of do the same things you do in W101, but they're all much more obvious, sacrificing a bit of depth for ease of use. You do the same kinds of things where you have a basic but very flexible toolkit, a lot of situational defensive tools, and a bucket of gimmicks, but now they're all on buttons. Positioning and crowd control matter a lot, stun builds methodically and you can't launch until you stun, and you're put into a lot of situations where you want to have one Legion or another (except they're accessed via radial menu instead of drawing like W101). It feels like the cool version of W101. I don't think it's anywhere as deep, but it feels fantastic.

I kinda try to push the game to drop framerate in mob battles with multiple legions because it's really fucking hard to see incoming attacks otherwise. Enemies don't have a problem with gangraping you off camera.

I liked W101 way better. I'm not very far in this at all, but none of it is meshing with me. The dodge feels like stiff anus, plus when I try to dodge an enemies spin move like Max's axe legion early on I get the slowdown but then get reemed by the rest. Then trying to get a legion to go to an enemy you are locked on to only for it to go to one off screen constantly is annoying as shit. I really want to like the game, but so far I'm not.

Your dodge is not a Bayonetta dodge, it's got a bunch of recovery and your attacks out of perfect dodge have no i-frames. If you see something spinning at you, get the fuck out of the way, either dodge for positioning and not i-frames or chain jump the hell out of there.

Later on, you get the ability parry (in two flavors), and some but not all of these parries have slightly more invincible counter attacks that you can use to bullshit your way through attacks.

If you lock onto an enemy and tap ZL, the legion will always either come to you or charge at the targeted enemy. This is a little ability chip thing that lets you dash a legion with a flick of the analog stick, but that shit got annoying fast with platforming so I ditched it.

The multi-hit spin moves are a pain in the ass. You either have to learn to read them, and sprint or chain-jump out of range, or use a sync attack on the first successful slowdown to avoid the damage.
The game's biggest problem is that fundamentally important combat mechanics are locked away for story reasons in the first few missions, making the first couple hours boring and needlessly difficult. I don't think I really liked the combat until mission 4, at which point it was starting to get real good.

Your dodge has no i-frame you got to completely dodge it and keep dodging the follow-up attacks.

The stick, definitely the stick. Treat weapons like fighting games inputs and you'll get the hang of it in no time. And yes, the game doesn't explain jackshit, which is a common problem with platinum games. Remember that attacking without a shape ready gives you a soft lockon on a mob, while also building up a stun meter, and if you create a morph while locked on you'll be pulled right next to them

Also buy the goddamn dodge (spring) and block (guts) after the literal first mission, they are locked behind the shop so a LOT of people miss them

I like that the people in Astral Chain still act like actual people. So many times in these cyberpunk games you end up with regular people acting like literal sociopaths and social order being completely broken, but here there are schools, kids that actually exist, shops that sell luxury items, etc. etc.

I kinda like its pacing in comparison to something like Bayonetta. Games like that, shit gets wrecked by a giant demon and Dante or whatever just gets out of dodge. Here you are a little more tethered to the world with cop activities, revisiting areas as they recover from destruction, taking time to rescue civilians instead of hauling ass after the giant demon.

I'm not saying it's an inherently better way to go about things, but it's certainly a charming concept that differentiates it from the rest of the genre even more than the combat tweaks.

There's a much bigger focus on variety. Getting sync attacks, getting chain binds, using skills, switching legions, getting crits, etc. As long as you're actively making trying to mix it up, the game usually rewards you for it. Heck you can even die & get revived and still get S+ ranks.

I have a question about that boss, when you get to the very last part of the fight and he just starts punching the shit out of you for a billion damage, how the fuck do you get away from that? The only thing I found that worked was Arm Legion perfect call counter attack, anything else gets blown the fuck out by him comboing you.

As far as I can tell, if he starts comboing you you're pretty much fucked. My Arm legion had Super Armor Omega so I just took a few hits and noped out. But I also had points where Axe legion would come over and help out.

Honestly though that whole fight is insane. He's got every trick in the book and then some. First half felt pretty great even but the second half clearly shows he's the ultimate life form.

Its cool but I feel like it can be incredibly clunky at times. The startup animations to a lot of the motions like running/chain jumping etc can really get in the way of some fluid motions.

Compared to a lot of other games from platinum like Bayo, it's pretty clunky.

Now imagine if it wasn't gimped by an ancient console.

The camera does struggle a lot. Lock-on is pretty much useless, there's a lot of off-camera action that isn't telegraphed properly and there's a lot of battles in tight areas where the camera goes into weird positions. Not to mention the camera sometimes goes spastic when you switch to moving your legion and you lose the ability to manually adjust it.

You eventually learn to work around these issues (keeping legions in frame, avoiding lock-on entirely, constantly dodging in case there's an attack coming behind you, etc.) but they're still there.

This is the one glaring weakness of the combat system. Platinum already knows the rule about not letting enemies attack from invisible positions (they may have invented it), so why did they not implement it?
You can usually work around visibility concerns by retreating a bit, but it's still an irritant.

Sure, but that's not really an equivalent advantage. You can't really do anything with it at that point.
At least they seem to have been aware that this makes damage-free fighting virtually impossible in a fair number of cases and taken that out of the rank requirements.
