I Am Setsuna was such a disappointment that no one brings up Lost Sphear or whatever which was more of the same but less piano, and now they've got some new action game Oninaki that is also the definition of mediocre.

lost sphear lost me on the demo, it didn't even manage to pull a sale from me (I dont bother pirating games anymore, my backlog is big enough as it is). It just seemed, I dunno how to describe it, but "shit" would probably be a simple enough way.

That's what sells in Japan, so it's what they found funding for. The dream team is naturally too expensive/disinterested with the property to ever give us a true sequel.

The DS port doesn't change much except for the ending. The new true ending is pretty much a tie-in to Cross, the most important moment involving Lucca adopting an abandoned Kid. It also fixed some plot holes the translation introduced (I think).

There was also a new boss fight against the Dream Devourer which causes Magus to lose his memory and supposedly turn into Magil from Cross, but I forgot where exactly that happened in the game

They reinterpreted Crono Cross as a direct sequel to Trigger despite the wishes of the original Chrono Cross devs. Dalton comes back in a shitty boss fight nothing dungeon and literally says he's going to raise the Porre army to destroy Chrono and Marle (still happens offscreen). Schala fuses with lavos and becomes an optional post-game boss, and winning resulting in Magus losing his memory but still needing to look for her (despite Guile/Magil being changed in CC/RD to deliberately not be Magus). Also, they made a dumb fetch quest in the prehistoric era just to use the Singing Mountain and Battle 2 music.

It works now at least even if the UI is a tad shit and there's the odd graphical error. It lacks some DS content, it only kept the stuff that connects to Cross. Shit like the Arena of Ages and gallery are gone.

The guy is a genuinely great artist though, he captured Trigger's artstyle incredibly well while still adding more detail. He also did the spritework for Owlboy I believe.

It's just there for cutscenes, nothing about the data (or lack thereof) indicates it would ever be used in gameplay.

I can bet that the higher ups at Square saw this and thought nobody should be in charge of their series except for them, while the actual Chrono team would have loved to explore this idea (and even turn this into a full game) regardless of who made it.

The director wanted another Chrono game but didn't want to retread Trigger, so how do you go up from a time travel story only really taking advantage of the grandfather paradox? Alternate timelines, separate realities and how they influence the creation and destruction of each other.

I think at this point I've realized the only thing I actually want when I say I want a 3rd Chrono game is a tineline/dimension-hopping game with great music and Cross' beautiful, vivid scenery
I really couldn't care less about the potential future of the universe or the characters, and the ganeplay of both titles is only serviceable

It's just something about Trigger I guess. All that mysterious unused content and everything surrounding Schala/1999 AD/etc gives it an allure that few other RPGs have managed to capture. The title of Chrono Break is interesting. It seems to suggest to me that the idea was that all this time-travelling universe-hopping bullshit from Trigger/Cross broke the time-space continuum and you have to fix it. I like how this fan-video plays off it with the broken pendulum.

The only way to redeem the Chrono series if you want to call it that, is Crono and Serge have to fight for each others timelines to exist. Basically the parallels of fighting each other to see who's timeline has the right to exist. If you were to bring the Time Devour and Lavos into the equation it would be a chaotic evil that is fucking with both of them during this process. As for another Chrono game, I think SquareEnix is saving it for their last trump card before bankruptcy.
