That's what the normal maps would do. That's what I meant by simplified (see: shit) normal map change. The lighting model wouldn't change unless they've removed refraction, global illumination or subsurface scattering (all of which wouldn't really feature that much in a character creation screen anyway).
I agree it looks shittier, but I'm positive it's because of reduced detail in the textures as opposed to a lighting model change.

Everybody seem to ignore how CDPR basically made a series of tech demos to show off their intended result (and most of all, attract investors), because they had no idea how to build an open world from the ground up, and they needed to build up hype fast.
Sure it wasn't CG and you could actually control Geralt, but what you were seeing was never actually part of the game.
They were small, W2-inspired levels with extremely limited settings, the gameplay wasn't fully implemented and even the engine was slightly different.
I'm not saying they weren't dishonest when pretending that was the product you were getting, but they were sure they'd be able to port the tech demo areas to the main engine and call it a day.
As we all know, they weren't even able to do that. Turns out a huge virtual world actually requires dedicated optimization and you can't just slap together a series of next ten levels and hope for it to work.
It wasn't even consoles' fault, CDPR fucked up from the start.

In the end, they had to go back and redo most of the areas you saw in the early trailers, even the geometry is noticeably different at times. You can call it a downgrade, sure, but nothing was ever technically downgraded. You just fell in love with a product that never existed, like the E3 demo of Halo 2, or that Alien: Colonial Marines trailer.

The great looking promotional screencaps had a much simpler explanation: they were just fucking bullshots

That was for the 2013 trailers.
However back at the e3 2014 they had the game playable, 35mn of gameplay. They even played it on xbox one in closed doors and it ran like shit.
But it wasn't enough. So they butchered a lot of things in a hurry (post processing effects mostly, lighting, geometry).

It is getting tiresome when devs show early builds of the game built exclusively to impress people then later we get to see how it was too much for the targeted hardware (base consoles of this gen).
The UI is the one wich is more evident, this remembers me from Ubisoft games like Watch Dogs, Rainbow Six Siege and The Division, which had unbelievable UI systems but when it launched it was dumbed down to what it seems more like a web page overlapped on the game.
It is not clear but not only the models looks less detailed in geometry but also its shaders are lower resolution, just check the male veins at his arms and legs. This reminds me Uncharted 4 trailer where you could clearly see Drakes wrinkles on his forehead but when the game launched it was blurry. (game still looks great tho). I can't really tell if it is really that bad because you can notice that the bottom image have way more artifacts from video compression than the one above.

1) Better textures and lighting on the exterior of the bath. The bottom only looks brighter because there's lights on in the bath for some reason with no light source. Everything else is worse.
2) Again, better lighting and textures. better looking effects on the nog in the back and Keanu looks more like a hologram instead of a shitty plastic doll
3) Noticeably higher LoD in nearby and distant buildings.
4) Better textures on the skin, more natural looking lighting effects on the computer panels. Image also looks crisper and less blurry.

Only the last image is too dark to tell. 4 of the 5 images objectively look better on the top.
