What's wrong with it? It's dead simple.
A battery runs current through a steel bar, heating it up, then the crossbow fires the red-hot bar like an arrow.
The only issue is that without stabilizing fins on the bar, the weapon would be very inaccurate in real life. Otherwise, it's entirely believable.

They were a special government cleanup crew.
They knew they would be fighting in close quarters, and additionally, would need to destroy tons of shit. A compact SMG with the capability to also lob explosives made sense given the situation.

Attaching a grenade launcher to a SMG isn’t unrealistic. It may not be entirely practical, but it would be very easy to do.
