This is possible but I also think that after 2007 the improvement of graphics slowed down, gameplay didn't develop any further in most genres and a lot of mid-sized developers disappeared who in years prior made games which where creative, innovative and "games that the developers themselves would like to play" for lack of a better term. Today it seems it's either a bland, soulless AAA title or an indie game. But the middle ground seems to have been lost.

Quality games still come out but get lost in the deluge of of games just trying to turn a profit. When the games industry started making more money than the film industry it was doomed to mediocrity.

I honestly blame Ea Sports and Activision for pushing and making simple and action based games for casual gaming. Ever since Call of Duty: Modern warfare became a huge hit, everybody tried to copy the formular that offers easy and action oriented gameplay that focused mostly on the aesthetics like graphics, and plotline rather than exploring new fields of gameplay.
In other words: Normies are to blame.

Im pretty sure the big culprit is the 2008 recession, unlike other major investable industries, most of which crashed or flatlined in 2008 due to the recession, video games actually saw solid growth during the recession, I am pretty sure what we're seeing is a ton of money being pushed around between publishers and investing companies, while developers are seeing less and less opportunity, you either have indie developers who due to restrictive budgets can only do so much unless they got lucky on kickstarter, or you have AAA big budget games that are under the oversight of media investors who only know movies, thus we get more 'cinematic' games and less gameplay for our dollar.

Mirror's Edge came out in 2008 and was pretty fun. The few games I've played after 2008 were indie games that felt like they could've come out before 2008 though.

It almost looks like a David Firth cartoon except it's not supposed to be scary but it's a kids show. Which somehow makes it way more spooky because it's not meant to be.

Not the guy you replied to but if you haven't tried Metroid Prime on DolphinVR, try it. It works really well in VR since it is mainly immersion-based game. Takes only a bit of fiddling with settings to get it running flawlessly with controller. That feeling of being alone in foreign uninhabited planet hits really hard. The space pirates are cool with them jumping and weaving around, as are physically larger bosses since their massiveness finally gets through to you.

2007 was the year PS3/360 development really came into full swing and people mostly stopped making games for the previous gen systems. Which meant development costs, making things harder for smaller developers and niche games. A lot of them fled to the cheaper Wii and PSP, hence why their libraries were so quirky, but that was just delaying the inevitable. The recession didn't help.

Not a single game has been released since 1998, prove me wrong.

Back in the 80s and 90s were used to mind-blowing evolution in graphics and gameplay.

I think this slowed down with the PS2/GC/XBOX generation and almost stopped with PS3/Wii/360.

PC also doesn't feel PC anymore, but a console with improved graphics.

PC's are consolized? How so? I feel the opposite actually. Consoles have gotten to the point we're they try so hard to do everything PC's can do that they aren't even plug and play anymore. Now you have to do first time setups, download updates, install games onto hard drives, download applications before you even get to play anything. Hell, a few games are even adding graphics menus to their console versions. Consoles have lost their identity.

Nah games are legit better than ever. Last gen was absolute cancer but this gen has been pretty lit. Sure there's the horrible new casual bollocks side of it that boomed last gen which is here to stay, but that massively died down in terms of its constant infection of promising titles and I feel like there's a really nice balance.

I feel like people who are still complaining the quality of games as a whole are either trapped in how awful last gen was and can never let it go or just have no actual interest in the medium anymore yet stick around anyway.

I don’t think that there ever has been a year with absolutely zero good games, but it’s true that the end of 7th gen and the start of 8th gen were certainly worse for vidya than the times preceding them or after them. Thankfully, the drought is now over and 2017 onwards has been very good for vidya, as in ”more great stuff than I ever could play”.
