There is supposedly an alternative being made but it's primarily oriented towards enriched editions so I have very little hope.

Ascension, obviously. Other than that it's hard to say, depends on what you like.
You probably want BG2 Fixpack and other similar mods (those that fix various bugs and obvious errors).
Also anything by Weimer have been at least decent so far. Unless I'm forgetting something.

Either way, I've used BWS recently and while I had to change file names and sizes in the config files a lot and restart the installation from scratch two times, everything worked out well in the end.

EE gives you the option of making your party's Feedback indicators their default armor color.

In the PnP it doesn't apply to what you are wearing, but what you own. So even things you're just lugging around in a backpack count against the number allowed. The best part is that potions are magical.

Being a paladin in AD&D is such a fucking trap. You need a DM who takes pity on you for playing this on top of it requiring 17 motherfucking charisma.

For me, it was a dozen Orogs as soon as I walked in, with a dozen more Vampiric Mists joining in from the west that never stop spawning, a pod of Hobgoblin Shaman to the immediate north, that kite back to the Rakshasa, who had 2-4 Kamikaze Kobolds.

Walk in, all my dudes get level drained, Rakshasa starts casting, lose at least one person to the Kobolds. Try to rest outside after using Restoration, come back in and all the Hobgoblins and Vampiric Mists are back, get level drained, retreat, rest, repeat.

Shit was awful.

Beamdog is a guilty of a number of different crimes. Here are the major ones.

1. The Enhanced Editions are essentially a collection of free mods that had existed for nearly twenty years. Beamdog gathered them all up, slapped "Enhanced Edition" on it and resold it as a new product. There's very very little in the Enhanced Editions that wasn't already out there, and most of it is stuff you don't want (like obnoxious character outlines).

2. The games didn't sell so well and the originals were still far outselling them, even twenty years after their release, so Beamdog had EVERY digital distributor stop selling the originals and ONLY sell the Enhanced Edition. If you want to buy a digital copy of the originals now, they're "bundled" into the Enhanced Edition. Now these scumbags can claim sales from people just wanting to buy the originals as their own.

3. The infamous 600+ bugs on launch. The game is still riddled with bugs (as even a perfunctory glance over their forums show) but the fact that it took nearly two years for them to get a game that had been working fine for 20 years to reach playability after launch is telling of their wild incompetence.

4. This is where we get to the ones that really piss people off. Beamdog couldn't just remaster the game, they had to fuck with the content too. New dialogue for existing NPCs like Jaheira, Viconia, Safana, Kivan, et cetera was written in to make the characters more progressive and leftist friendly. Beamdog shills will argue that "adding content isn't changing content XDDD" but it is when the new content changes the core personalities of the existing characters. This is in addition to adding a slew of their own LGBT (hitherto there were none in Baldur's Gate) NPCs, all flooded with OP attributes and magic items to encourage people to play them despite their cancer.

Remember how bad hold person was though? In BG1 if you're affected by hold person your armor class becomes hot garbage. It doesn't matter if you're wearing full plate armor and it's highly magical. Your awesome armor is basically intangible during that spell, even unintelligent enemies will just tear through you and your armor like it's made of paper, even if your allies attack them.

A person could indeed coldly murder you while you're paralyzed, but even they would not necessarily get to automatically do so when they're being attacked and flanked by multiple dangerous allies of yours who are trying to stop them.

This isn't even a hypothetical. I had this happen in Baldur's Gate. An unintelligent as fuck creature butchered my protagonist fighter through his full plate armor while my allies desperately fought it to protect me to no effect.

There are unintelligent creatures that pose threats to even experienced and well equipped adventurers. Even in a game with a more limited bestiary than normal D&D there are creatures like this.

It happened twice as I can remember. They were lucky flukes by pretty trashy creatures, a ghast, and a carrion crawler. They can potentially paralyze you on hit. They weren't dangerous to me, except if they immediately got a lucky hit and there was a failed save. The carrion crawler was especially annoying. It was all by itself, all my allies were attacking it and this creature was trash that I had beaten many times before.

Its not flawed game logic though. AC determines how easy you are to hit. Not how much damage a blow will do. Sure, a sword hitting steel plate doesn't care if you're paralyzed or not. But that's not how AC works. It's an abstraction to determine how likely you are to get hurt. Being a fucking flesh statue makes you pretty easy to hurt.

Her introduction in Fort Joy does feel like it was either written by someone else or it was a first draft. Because during her first meeting on the ship and after Fort Joy, she behaves like a completely different person.

After level 10 I think you lose extra HP point when leveling up and you always gain 3. Balance or some shit. Don't think too much about things like that, the game starts losing decent progression for non-caster characters after those levels.

Do you have trouble piercing information together? Or do you only have a 30 second long memory? The way DnD handles paralyzation in 3rd edition is really simple and much better than in Baldur's Gate. It's not complicated. You, or someone like you, thought it was too complicated to make paralyzation be balanced or realistic at all. But it turns out that a good game mechanic can be very simple.

Spent your 20s in a library reading books? You're a week mother fucker. Spent your 20s in a gym lifting weights? You can still stomp some ass at 50.

I'm literally halfway through chaper 4 of Swordlight right now. It's an absolutely overrated grindfest and chapters 3 and 4 are a huge shallow filler with tons of repetitive encounters.
Quantity over quality all over the place, even in chapter 2 - just remember those godawful sewers.

DOS2 is a better game, with more grounded, coherent story and is still enjoyable in single player. I wasn't a big fan of DOS1, but I had bucketloads of fun with the sequel. And Sebille is my girl forever and ever.

While I enjoy a thief I will caution that they take an extreme amount of micromanagement between either having to buff with non detection in late game or simply constantly running and breaking line of sight in order to re-stealth, they can be a bit of a hassle. With that said though, nothing beats struggling against a powerful boss just to reload, send in a thief, backstab, and be done with it in a moment.

The multiple dream sections in BG1 show it trying to influence you to be more murderous although you can fight back or use it for your own ends. The slayer form and how uncontrollable and harmful it can be for you in BG2 shows you just a taste of how the power of being a murder god can change you

So even if you don't become Bhaal, just turning into the god of murder may change you to make you more murderous. Maybe. At least it might seem like a possible outcome, since the game suggests it multiple times.

Yep, that's a good point, both for and against. The trials in BG2 show temptations from the power of Bhaal that you're reclaiming. You can resist it, or work with it. So maybe this shows you can resist being controlled by the power of murder. That said, the power you're resisting and fighting in the trial is SO INSIGNIFICANT next to the full power you may have to control when you become the full on god of murder.

OC has its moments. It's a very typical fantasy heroic adventure. It's just terrible at giving you role-playing opportunities.
The expansions are better but SoU is the only one that feels like an RPG, even though you still don't have a party. In HotU you're just dragged through the main quest and fight, fight, fight Diablo-style not that differently from the OC.

I could not disagree more with this sentiment. It's fantastic that they included a proper level 1 experience for players. Level 1 parties are notoriously short lived. You can only be level 1 for a short time period and it's a very different experience being that low level. The progression of your character in a world that doesn't change its difficult makes for a more immersive experience.
