>loses the 6th gen
Did they really think they could compete with the PS2, the Xbox or the Dreamcast? The Gamecube was such a disappointment with some of the worst first party Nintendo games, awful third party support, and shit tier media that is now self-destructing.
Loses the 6th gen

okay, retard
Imagine the timeline where they didn't go with the small disc to combat piracy, if it had even DVD support Nintendo would have easily won.
Nothing would've helped. Even if the Capcom 5 were to be exclusive like they were supposed to be
The gamecube was fine, technically. I agree that the proprietary disc format really hurt them.
capcom 1 really. Also a cancelled game.
Jesus christ, I know the PS2 was awesome but did it need to put her in a wheel chair?
Nintendo hasn't been competing with anybody since the 90s
What is it with Sony bootlickers thinking everyone's trying to beat them in their special Olympics marathon?
This
The GC had stronger hardware than its competitors at the time, but Nintendo Execs were still convinced that cartridge-based media was the way forward, and the lack of native DVD support is why the GC came in second to the PS2 in sales.
Seemed to do ok against the dreamcast.
gamecube is way more overrated than n64
*since 2006
GCN was absolutely meant to compete, that's why it had stronger technical specs than the PS2.
>The GC had stronger hardware than its competitors at the time
In some ways it was weaker than the dreamcast
It's still the best designed Nintendo console and controller. All you need is a box to play the games. None of this horrid gimmick shit that has come to define them and loses them more third-party support with every new generation.
For the Wii and Wii U, sure. The Switch has way more third party support than the Wii U, and the 3DS's support was basically unchanged from the DS.
>wanted both gamecube and ps2
>played pc instead and got gba, ds and psp cause parents thought i would just play on the tv whole day
I wouldn't play the good games anyways, like those ps2 jrpgs, with gamecube i knew what i would play though, just nintendo stuff
>GCN was absolutely meant to compete
It wasn't stop deluding yourself
Nah, they'd still have terrible third-party support. Probably even worse since everybody would've been pirating the shit out of it.
It literally had better parts than the PS2 and most third party titles ran better on Gamecube and Xbox.
>>loses the 6th gen
But that doesn't look like an Xbox.
It was though.
See
Third parties like Capcom and EA pulled out because of the small disc, they couldn't hold as much space.
I swear to god that reminds me of those walking wedgie things that they used to put some of the special needs kids in at my middle school.
It was meant to, doesn't mean it did.
It says a lot that the PS2 was pushed to far more ambitious heights than the Gamecube ever was. The thing is the PS2 had the power to back it up. On the Gamecube, provided you could wrangle the fucked up RAM situation, the results you got were fine and you couldn't really push it beyond that.
How did it lose? Dreamcast lost, but that gen was amazing, after that i cared for games but i don't care for those games anymore.
It was literally the last good Nintendo console
LOOK MOM I COPY AND PASTED MY STATEMENT
Is this a real accessory?
>LOOK MOM I AM SILLY
Same thing kind of happened with the PS3. It had a fucked up computing layout, but towards the end of its lifespan it had some stupid gorgeous games.
PS2 was pushed to more ambitious heights with like Shadow of the Coleus cause again it had the space to try out those titles. The gamecube tiny disk could only hold little over 1 gig
Nah, the Wii was better.
Storage space had nothing to do with it dumdum.
All of the sony niggers don't even remember how competitive it was back then. The gamecube was prevalent, and a lot of my classmates had one.
Sony probably sold maybe 2:1 ratio more than gamecube in North America, during the 2001-2006 era, and that's including all of the manchildren and adults who just wanted a dvd player. Whereas the under 18 crowd it was easily 1:1. It wasn't 10:1 or whatever sony niggers keep saying. Most of their sales came after 2006 and was mostly in Brazil and poorfag areas.
The PS2 sold 159 million units. The gamecube did 22M. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that.
>that's including all of the manchildren and adults who just wanted a dvd player.
If they just wanted a DVD player, they would have got one. They wanted a PS2 instead. The PS2 was not a "cheap DVD player." You need to cope.
>Wii was better
I honestly can't even think of a single system seller on Wii. What the fuck were supposed to be it's good games again? Dokapon Kingdom was fun, but was available on another system.
Zelda
Mario
THAT'S IT
You can't push the limits of a system with fancy graphics effects if you can't put it on the disk retard.
>I honestly can't even think of a single system seller on Wii
Why would this matter?
>What the fuck were supposed to be it's good games again
Do you want to know?
fancy effects are small in size, cube just couldn't do them at all.
>Zelda
No?
>Mario
For some reason I couldn't connect Galaxy and the Wii in my mind. Completely forgot it came out on that system.
Xenoblade, some other jrpg, mario galaxy 1/2, mario kart, wii sports, wario land, skyward sword despite how shitty it is, red steel 1/2, madworld, i can't think of that many either. No more heroes is best played on wii.
>Why would this matter?
If you don't know why good games make a good console then there isn't any hope for you.
Wii Sports is a system seller but I don't consider it a particularly good game. Why bring that up at all instead of focusing on good games?
Not him, but yes, PS2 was the cheapest DVD player back then. My parents bought one for movies and they never played a single game.
Normies were all over Wii Fit.
That "game" was so synonymous with casuals who don't play vidya that Yea Forums exploded into autistic rage when the trainer "stole" a spot in sm4sh.
Only thing I would give you on your list is Galaxy 1/2. I never played Red Steel 2 or Madworld so I can't judge them. Pretty abysmal list... You even managed to piss me off with Mario Kart considering I loved the shit out of that series and the Wii version is the version that forced me to give up the series.
I don't think Yea Forums exploding into autistic rage over smash is a rare enough event to be used to gauge disagreement over anything. We had people screaming about characters samurai likely doesn't even know exist.
No, they knew they would make a far inferior product whose only good games would be 1st party. They knew it was underpowered and would pale in comparison to the competition, but brand loyalists would still buy in sufficient numbers to make plenty in profit.
Sound familiar?
At least GC had a decent amount of 1st party titles. Now they are literally selling cardboard and plastic toys to man children.
>The Gamecube was such a disappointment with some of the worst first party Nintendo games
This must be bait because the GameCube has probably one of the best library of first-party games
>but yes, PS2 was the cheapest DVD player back then
No, look at best buy catalogs on the wayback machine. While the PS2 was 300 dollars there were players as cheap as $130. You fell for an old Nintendo psyop because you weren't old enough to be around at the time. Don't worry, you can correct yourself now.
>b-but the PS2 was added value
Then they wanted a PS2, not a DVD player.
>The GC had stronger hardware
Xbox was way stronger than it.
I know this is bait, but just compare the nostalgia for this gen. People seldom look back on PS2. People literally never talk about OG Xbox because there are literally zero games worth going back for. But holy fuck, everyone remembers the good times they had playing Gamecube with friends and the games are still fun to go back to.
To me
>Muramasa The Demon Blade
>Pandora´s Tower
>Mario Kart
>No more heroes 1 & 2
>Wario Ware Smooth moves
>Wario Land Shake it
>Mad World
>Donkey Kong Country Returns
>Sin & Punishment.
>The PS2 sold 159 million units. The gamecube did 22M. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that.
over half of that was overseas sales and post-2006. it's just a fact. You didn't grow up as a teenager back then, zoomer.
Hey, i don't think wii is that of a good console in games department i mostly liked the gimmicks, sports games, etc. My list is nice, you don't like xenoblade, wario land? Mario kart wii is my fav, besides for switch one.
It's amazing how much the Xbox sold considering it had only Halo, Halo 2, and JSRF to its name
The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles and Mario Galaxy are pretty good
Brawl sold pretty well
>The GC had stronger hardware than its competitors at the time
just the PS2
>You fell for an old Nintendo psyop because you weren't old enough to be around at the time.
I was in college back then and I bought a PS2 with my first payment because I wanted to play DMC/FFX and plus a DVD player since I didnt have one.
>No, look at best buy catalogs on the wayback machine. While the PS2 was 300 dollars there were players as cheap as $130
People didn´t buy online as now back in 2000, of course a Sony DVD player at 300 sounds like a better deal than a KLH at 130 bucks.
>plus a DVD player
So you wanted a PS2, not a DVD player.
>People didn´t buy online as now back in 2000
They did, but you're too young to know about that. Good news is that these prices reflect in store prices.
Mario Kart Wii and Switch piss me off more than Paper Mario for 3DS and Wii U. When looking at MKDD, the lightning was the ONLY item in the game that couldn't be avoided. Also, DD introduced Grand Tour then it was immediately taken away and in its place we had to pick 4 random stages instead of even doing cups? I don't remember exactly which one did that shit. Finally, the Wii U/Switch version did the final nail in the coffin when replacing horizontal split screen with vertical split screen.
Because unlike the GC it had neat exclusives.
Thats why GC failed. I was adding games for Dolphin, and the library is fucking barren.
>neat exclusives.
name ten
steel battalion, mechassault, jsrf, pgr2, deathrow, double steal, magatama, otogi 1 & 2, phantom dust, panzer dragoon orta, brute force, crimson sea, gun valkyrie, rent-a-hero no. 1, tenerezza, sudeki, xyanide, dennou taisen drone-z, bloodwake, fuzion frenzy, breakdown.
Now name 10 gamecube exclusives everyone hasn't already played.
Switch one is good, chill, but i hate the vertical split screen as well. I don't remember any of cups having random tracks, except for online modes. Maybe my memory is hazy, you sure wii one had that?
>People seldom look back on PS2.
Patently false. We have daily threads on the PS2 megaten games. San Andreas still pops up when talking about GTA.
Give Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Eternal Darkness, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, Custom Robo, Paper Mario, Double Dash, Path of Radiance, Skies of Arcadia, Twin Snakes, Battalion Wars, Chibi Robo and Wario Land and Phantasy Star a try.
Anything that everyone hasn't already played yet? Also Skies of Arcadia is vastly inferior on GC, as is Twin Snakes.
Xbox outsold the Gamecube
Melee, MKDD, Prime, TTYD, AC, Luigi's M, Symphonia, Fire Emblem, and maybe a few more
Those are all pretty much system sellers and there are still a few more exclusives that people loved that I haven't even played yet. Then you get into games that technically aren't exclusive but are the better system to play on like RE4 and possibly Skies of Arcadia Legends. Is the Wii your first console?
What are other unavoidable items except for lighting? And you can avoid lighting with a star. The only unavoidable i think is the ink one, but it has the least effect an item can do.
I wish everyone had played Custom Robo and Battalion Wars.
>Skies of Arcadia Legends
inferior to the original.
>Because unlike the GC it had neat exclusives.
I dunno I can count all the Xbox games worth playing on one hand GCN had
Animal Crossing
Baten Kaitos
Eternal Darkness
F-Zero GX
Path of Radiance
Killer7
The Primes
P.N.03
Thousand Year Door
The Pikmins
REmake
Resident Evil 4
Rogue Squadron
Melee
The Zeldas
Also some good enhanced ports of dreamcast games once that died like Skies of Arcadia
It's by no means better than the PS2's library which I'd say was easily the greatest game library in history but it was leaps and bounds better than Xbox had on offer, well maybe the Xbox would have been more appealing if you didn't have a PC and include PC ports like Morrowind I think that pushes it to two hands rather than one.
Custom Robo is one of those games that appeals to very specific kinds of people, the kind of people that enjoy cleaning up every splotch of dirt on the ground in mario sunshine. People who realize they're wasting their time would rather play something a lot more fun. Battalion Wars is okay.
Where's Radirgy Generic? Dream Mix TV? Giftpia? Kururin Squash?
>enhanced ports of dreamcast games once that died like Skies of Arcadia
that's a downgraded port, like sonic adventure 1 & 2.
Well in audio compression it's objectively worse, they really had to drop the sound quality to fit that game on the gamecube disc, but to overlook all the other improvements Legends made over the original would be extreme I think.
>but i hate the vertical split screen as well
Couch multiplayer is literally 90% of the way I played the game.
>you sure wii one had that
It was multiplayer mode, but I don't remember exactly which did it. I think it started with the Wii, but it could have been the DS version too.
>can avoid lightning with a star
That isn't avoiding it user, that is blocking it. I mean avoiding as in maneuvering your kart. I got to the point in DD that I could play the game without items and still beat anyone I played against. I even started dodging spiney shells on a rare occasion although they are CLOSE to being unavoidable. Also, lightning in DD was a rarity, and stars didn't have a huge impact on your speed.
It wasn't that the Wii version was chock full of them, but it still increased luck reliance and got rid of the best feature that came to the game.
>but to overlook all the other improvements Legends made over the original would be extreme I think
like?
I thought audio went down but it gained shit like an extra area and maybe some other shit? I never played the original and its been forever since I've seen this info but I do recall reading that one version isn't a direct improvement in every way and that you are losing out on something no matter what version you picked.
The extra content in Legends is like the extra content of the Saturn version of SotN. Half baked, poorly implemented and comes at the cost of too much to justify it as being positive value.
GameCube was Nintendo's Dreamcast. Too pure for this world and, as an aside, had the best control pad of all time.
extra content, better graphics, characters have fingers on gamecube, less censorship, ect
It had great games, though.
fpbp
How the fuck do you dodge spiney shells without using mushrooms or either speed boosts. DD is a unique game for the main mechanic, but it's not like the new ones are worse, mario kart 8 is objectively better. And the only luck based thing is not getting hit by lighting while flying or having a honk or boosting when being hit by a shell. Other than that, all newer mario karts are balanced pretty well.
>better graphics
You can make this game look pretty damn good with Dolphin. I've never messed with DC emulation yet. Can you do the same thing with that version or are you kinda limited like you usually are with older consoles?
Let time I tried Dreamcast emulation it was still pretty sketch, I played Rise from the Ashes and more than once ran into emulation issues. No idea how skies of arcadia works though so you might give it a try.
People recommend DEmul now but I used nullDC last time because DEmul had issues I couldn't resolve but I think that should be fixed by now, it's been years. I did a lot of dreamcast emulation on Chankast back in the day but that was super buggy.
>How the fuck do you dodge spiney shells without using mushrooms or either speed boosts
Been forever since I did it. Pretty sure it involved tricking it with a powerslide, such as going into and coming out of it at just the right time maybe. Not something I ever got to doing consistently though.
>mario kart 8 is objectively better
I think you missed the part where I said I almost always played the game in local multiplayer mode. It is unplayable to me in vertical split screen. Also, did they end up bringing back All Cup Tour? Nothing felt more satisfying than getting a 160 on your friend's save file.
Why is this gamecube in a wheelchair?
>So you wanted a PS2, not a DVD player.
I wanted both.
>They did, but you're too young to know about that
Indeed thats a proof of you being too young back then since online services wasnt popular by early 2000´s and people distrust over online transactions.
XBOX: 24 million
GC: 21,9 Million
You can dodge everything if you are lucky or just good with powerslide in nowadays games.
>vertical split screen
It's shitty yeah. I usually play with 4 players though. Still nice to play 2 player co op but while playing online with others. You get used to vertical mode but would have been nice to have option to change it, especially with all the big tvs nowadats. I mainly hate the assist things in mario kart 8, it's always turnin on when you play couch co op. But that's the problem of many nintendo games, they just have zero options.
Tbqh, i bought ps2, ps3 and psp for not just games but for dvd, blu ray and i used psp like a ipod of sorts, music player is amazing and used to convert movies there all the time. The only ones that feel dumb are ps4 and vita: ps4 doesn't have much new that ps3 doesn't have, vita had 3g and some social apps, but it was awkward to use, unlike tablets and phones at that time. Sony always seems to have the consoles media based.
>small disc to combat piracy
it wasnt only that.
using a regular DVD was expensive because they will had to pay a license for it.
they lost because they were cheap and didnt want to pay for it.
>VHS beats Beta with help from porn
>Bluray beat HD-DVD with help from porn
>Modern Sony turns into censorship loving liberals
I hope they are cursed by this and lose the next generation due to it.
>Tbqh, i bought ps2, ps3 and psp for not just games but for dvd, blu ray and i used psp like a ipod of sorts,
You're great at making bad purchasing decisions for your needs then. Not very smart.
How so, dumbass, that's how i made my parents buy both ps2 and ps3, so we could use them for dvd and blu ray (we bought like two dvd players after that though and 1 blue ray one). Psp is very good for media purposes.
If they are liberals how do the love censorship? I think that if you are liberal you should be more open to things instead.
The portability thing was actually pretty cool and did help it's status as a multiplayer machine (Something the PS2 supremely sucked at). I bet the disk shit was Miyamoto's idea though. The man is a dolt.
No, the ps3 was the cheapest bluray player at the time but ps2 certainly wasnt the cheapest dvd player
Because he's likely a centrist or left leaning but doesn't want to admit it on Yea Forums, so he makes out like he's right even though his beliefs align with the left.
>I think that if you are liberal you should be more open to things instead.
>liberals don't censor white guys
>liberals don't censor anyone who thinks there are 2 sexes
>liberals don't censor anyone who wants to own guns
>so on so forth
I think you are mixing up democrats and liberals. Liberals are not peace loving hippies. They are the most closed minded group of individuals out there. Hell, even fucking nazi's are more open minded then they are. They think it is okay to physically attack people, and even try to kill them, for trying to express an opinion that opposes their own.
They are not true liberals then. Sorry mate, but your views are of a redneck who has has kill niggers stickers on his truck.
No console nor controller has aged as well as the GameCube has. Like all Nintendo consoles up to that point it benefited from the magical nostalgia that turned it into a collectors item instead of a piece of junk like the PS2 became as soon as snoy stopped supporting it.
I'm probably more of a centrist. Why wouldn't I want to admit that on Yea Forums?
>They are not true liberals
Welcome to this thing called reality where ideals don't match people's true intentions. Kind of like how things like socialism is idealistically a perfect society and yet you will NEVER find a single successful socialist society.
Dualshock 2 was perfection. GC controller was just good for Mario Kart and Smash.
Yeah, don't blame me for those fucks then, faggot. I'm also a centrist but have more sympathy for left politics. Soviet socialism also sounds like far left ideology but in reality it deported mongoloid from european parts of russia and inserted russians everywhere where only natives lived before.
Resident evil 4 was made to be played with a GC controller. Big A button was awesome for most of the important controls
>more sympathy for left politics
Left ideals are nice but unrealistic. Free fucking college? Nothing in life is fucking free. That money comes from somewhere. Socialized healthcare? Medical innovations come from capitalism. Once you socialize, that funding dissapears overnight, and the whole world suffers for it.
Then again, you said left politics, but I was hoping you didn't mean politics. Lets look at left politics. Left gets Obama in. Horrible choice, nothing to do with him being black, and what happens? We let the worthless shit be president. Trump gets elected? Democrats want to destroy the nation. Literally attack the guy non-stop through his whole career, and even try to threaten impeachment, which they never go through with because they know it will fail and it will only garner him more support from people who are fed up with the Democrats and their constant whining.
Don't get me wrong, I thought he was a poor choice too. The problem is it seems like both sides want the opposite side to have the poorest choice possible so they can have an easy win, so presidential elections end up coming down to seeing who has the more likable class clown. Hilary and Trump shouldn't have even ended up running against each other...
80% of the nintendo games i give a shit about are on this console
Honestly still haven't played 4 yet. I probably would have played it by now if I didn't play 5 first. After that, the thought of fake "zombies" has pissed me off too much.
>Free fucking college
Where do you live? USA? I used to live in Russia, now i live in Czech republic. Healthcare is free and so is education. Same in Russia, but it's shittier, you have to be either super smart to get for free or have connections. Healthcare sometimes is good, sometimes it isn't, depends on the hospital. Americans truely live on another fucking planet.
4 is all time great. Play it
Also, my parents lived in USSR, healthcare and education was free if you talk about socializm, though ussr was shit and only produced good music, movies, books, some innovations and arguably good architecture.
gamecube is the most impressive nintendo console
Did Sega really think the Dreamcast could compete with anyone?
>MUH SOULCALIBURR
>MUH SANIC ADBENTURE
>MUH SHENMOO
>ZOOMERS actling like they know anything
back in 2004, most people had at least two of the consoles in their families. my best friend had a gamecube, his older brother a xbox huge. I had a gamecube, my older brother a PS2. only poor families only had one, and it was usually a PS2 for the sole purpose of playing DVD's and maybe jak/silent hill.
>USA?
Yes.
>Americans truely live on another planet.
Yeah, I try telling that to people that think they want to live in another country. Not many people in America realize just how different we are to other countries. I mean fuck, you can be punished for watching TV in England without paying a special tax. That is just unthinkable as an American.
But like I was saying, everything comes at a cost. If America decided to join in the "superior" social medicare experiment then the whole world would suffer. We pump out the medical innovations while socialist medicare benefits from it.
my point is that this console war bullshit wasn't really discussed aside from a few jokes. taking this crap seriously is cringey and childish.
>the Xbox
lmao, you're so obviously a zoomer that wasn't around for how badly this piece of shit failed
>innovations
Most of medicine and innovations also comes from europe, mainly germany here. You are either trolling or really ignorant.
actual 37 year old man here. the gamecube was not competitive at all. the PS2 completely dominated the era. saying anything else is a complete delusion.
the gamecube was known as the "smash box" because the only reason anyone owned one was for melee.
>It says a lot that the PS2 was pushed to far more ambitious heights than the Gamecube ever was
Eh not really. A lot of the games on ps2 were extremely simple and didn't have a lot going on on screen.
Here is some sample evidence from a quick search. There is MUCH better evidence out there other than just scholarly articles such as actual medical technology but it would take me more than a few seconds to get you some good sources. As a random user you may try to dispute this, but I've never seen anyone try to dispute this on a more professional level.
>gamecube was not competitive
True.
>the only reason anyone owned one was for melee
Okay now I doubt your 37 year old statement... The main reason someone DIDN'T own a GC was because they were one of the normalfags that the system helped bring into the fold.
I'm not saying that US doesn't have advanced medical technology, especially considering that researchers also like money. But you are the one that pays thousands for health services. I don't, thank God and my parents for that.
>But you are the one that pays thousands for health services
What percent do you pay in taxes? Do you owe any type of fee when going to a doctor? Can you just go to the doctor any day of the week because you feel like it? There are other factors besides innovation that have their ups and downs. I'd pay more for healthcare in Canada than I do here even though it is "free" there, and I'd get worse service. Also, another thing America tends to lead in when it comes to healthcare is mortality rates. Who cares if your healthcare is free if it costs you your life...
gamecube had a better library than the n64
