At the very least, around Disgaea 4 it starts feeling outright impossible going back to Disgaea 1, gameplay-wise. It's why most people were disappointed the "remake" was 100% graphical, complete with Disgaea 1's now completely antiquated gameplay systems, plus them cheaping out on monsters from D1.

Yeah, D1 Refine uses their High-Rez assets from D4 on, so some monsters got replaced or straight up not returned, IIRC.
It didn't matter anyways, because Monsters only got good around D4, but it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth that they half-assed a remake of the first game.

Of the two of them, I don't think Etna would ever really have the heart to kill His Highness. She talks a big game, but she's sappier than she lets on. Too much nostalgia for the old king at any rate. And Flonne was already contracted to kill him once. But you mean end up with, as in riding full throttle on that Harley. I think Etna will get around to that first and Flonne will, at best, be a side gig. That said, I think Flonne would round him out better. It's just Etna's already got that dick on reserve.

The first games are kinda bad at explaining their own mechanics to the player. Each character has 8 stats (HP, SP-which is mana for special abilities- attack, defense, intelligence ,speed, hit, and resistance. Various weapons benefit from various stats, which is the hard part .Guns get a damage boost from hit, guns calculate it by adding 50% of both atk a hit, meele works off Hit but axes give you penalty to your DEF, and spears have lower dmg but 2 range. All stats can be boosted by getting innocents (or specialists in 1) on your gear.

There is nothing about leveling and reforging weapons in this game i´m a little confused.
But there are weapon mastery levels, which you gain by using the weapon Different classes have diffrent affinities for weapons which also changes depending if the unit is male or female, so just pick what best fits the weapon you plan to use. The higher the class´affinity for that weapon the more weapon mastery points you gain. Having the Armsmaster innocent on your gear (I think any gear on that unit, not just the weapon itself) gives you a boost to mastery gain. Leveling most weapons gives you more special abilities, and leveling staves increases your range with spells. You can also level up each (successively more powerful and SP-intensive) variant of a spell to able to cast it in various patterns.
Transmigration kind of works like that, though, reach enough levels with a unit (I think 15 for the 1st) and fight promotion battles at the Dark assembly to reach rank 3, and then you can spend mana (gained by defeating enemies, based on their level) to transmigrate that unit.
This reverts their level to 1 and you lose most special abilities, their level and weapon mastery levels (based on the baseline capability you choose to transmigrate to) but you get to redistribute that units stat points, based the capability ( which influences how their stats grown when you level up), and this is the important part, you also get bonus stat points based on the total levels you´ve given up by transmigrating.

Actually, items in Disgaea do have levels, common quality items have 10, rares have 30 and legendaries have 100. Going into an item´s Item world gives you that many randomly generated stages to complete, and you get a bonus to the item´s stats, which adds to the user´s stats, based on the highest stage you cleared. There is also an additional bonus if you beat the Item General/King/God in the final stage.
Item world is also the way to get innocents, because they exist as random units somewhere in the Item world and if you can defeat them before the enemy does, you subdue them, which doubles their effectiveness and you then can move them between items and merge multiple groups of the same type together to save innocent slots.
