Persona is a very big popular series, and as a surprise pick Im sure Joker made a lot of people happy. Personally I have no connection to the series but he’s fun to play as. Overtuned as shit but we’ve come to expect that from dlc characters at this point
Hero I think was an absolute given. Like I don't think you understand just how big DQ is in Japan. The japanese normies know it well even at a glance. And the character is fun. Random bullshit balanced by weak ass frame data, slow speed and an awkward playstyle is an interesting approach

Piranha Plant wasn't just a joke character. It was also much easier to make than most other characters. I think that's one of the bigger reasons as to why it was chosen.

Joker probably got in due to P5 being so incredibly popular. The UI in this smash was directly inspired by it even.

That does not make it a big series. Its lifetime sales are under 10 million. P5 is the biggest seller to date and it's under 3 million. It is not here for any reason other than Sakurai liked the game. Or because it has a relatively small but obsessive fanbase that would buy Switches just because Joker is in Smash.
