Just downloaded Steam for the first time. Been a console gamer forever. What are the best free games on Steam? As for the genre, anything goes.

TF2, and CS if you like fps games
Let it Die is good
Not free but you can get both Hotline Miami games for $1.87 right now. They're on sale and the bundle is 81% off.
You should prob play souls games.
TF2, Dota 2
I thought about those but don’t they have a lot of microtransactions or something? And also would I even stand a chance in those games since they’ve been out for so long?
I’ll look into that one
Yeah I saw that but I recently got those games on Switch already
Correction, its actually $7.48, I'm a dipshit who read it wrong. Still, that's a very good deal considering the regular price is ~$40.
Dark Souls? I’ve got em all on Xbone already. Those aren’t free anyway right?
As a side note(and I know this is gonna sound like cringe incarnated) I played Doki Literature Club and really enjoyed it. Are there any free VNs that are fun? I’m new to the genre.
The Desolate Hope is neat but it might be an acquired taste, I don't know.
Cave Story is free but not on Steam, get it from cavestory.org if you want
I don't think you'll be finding many good free VNs on steam, but look up Katawa Shoujo I guess. It's not on Steam but it's free.
Bump
The only free counter strike is global offensive which is the worst one.
You don’t strictly need Steam for it, but since you have it already, the original Yume Nikki is free on (and off) Steam and is a bizarre masterpiece.
Warframe is f2p and is addictive in a terrible way. It’s like a great video game that someone mixed with a god-awful video game and a pile of crystal meth.
The Epic game store is giving away free games weekly, this week they are giving away 2 games, Inside and Celeste
The epic games store is spyware owned by a company with strong links to the Chinese government.
CSGO is riddled with cheaters left and right since it got free
Let it die gets to fucking horrible bullshit difficulty after some hours to make you pay money for items
You have access to every pc game ever available, for free, just go to piratebay or whatever, why do you bother with free2play bullshit ? Are you underaged ?
The Epic Games Store gives all of its games away for free, via The Pirate Bay.
I think dirt rally is still free for a couple more days.
Oh wow thanks for the info. I’ve heard Celeste is pretty good. What’s the catch with Epic Games Store though? Giving away free weekly games sounds too good to be true.
Nope the chinese dont own the majority of the company which is an American company, try again EU cuck
Path of Exile - ARPG
Shadowverse - CCG
Nah not work the risk, thank you
The catch is it sells your information to the Chinese government.
stock guns will be fine in tf2 and you'll unlock new ones no problem, it boils down to skill. if you're looking for free games, there's going to be a lot of microtransactions no matter where you go
I know I can get any pc game for free(and trust me I want to) but I have no fucking idea how to do that. I don’t know how torrents work or where I play the games after I download them or wtf I’m doing. I’m not underage I’m 21
Nothing, they are giving away games to potentially increase they customer base
the catch is malware
What does that even mean though? Like what information? I still don’t see why I shouldn’t download Epic Games Store
Its a lie, people claimed the same when EA released origin, they are just shills paid by Gaben to make people not use other digital stores.
You should get into emulation first. The beautiful thing about emulation is, because the files you need to pirate are never executables, you don’t run the risk of being horribly miner’d for downloading untrustworthy stuff. As you get more comfortable with the process of using torrents or warez sites, you will become more comfortable just pirating titles.
As a bonus, you get to turn your PC into a machine that plays like 90% of all videogames you ever played. Which is cool as fuck. And Steam can actually help with that (via Ice).
piracy you stupid nigger
>implying that epic is malware and that steam isn't
Hey, user, go download EGS. Have fun.
chang.....
dota 2 but if you try it you might get hooked like drugs
And yet there are countless stories of people signing up for epic games store only to get swamped with spam emails.
Fuck off sweeny.
You can get free games with no microtransactions, the trick is to wait for giveaways.
But if something is always free then yeah it's probably gonna have mtx.
There probably 100 YouTube videos about that, but here is the very quick version:
>download utorrent
>go to piratebay
>read the comments if you're downloading shit or not
>click the link, it opens in the program and download it
>unzip the finished download folder with winrar
>launch the ISO file in the folder with demontoolslite or whatever program, Win10 can even do it by itself
>install
>finish
Have fun
I’ve got a PS2, PSP, DS, and GameCube/Wii emulator. Is that what you mean? I’m kinda comfortable using those but I mean like for example if I downloaded a pirated copy of Monster Hunter World from PirateBay, where I do I put that file to play it? Is there an emulator for pirated current gen games? It’s all so confusing to me.
If you're fine with the Chinese eventually dictating what is and isn't in games then sure. Use Epic.
Also this guy has a point, but everything at PS2 era or later will most likely run like shit and if you're really 21, I doubt you get nostalgic for anything before that
>utorrrent
>piratebay
yikes
wow, there are youtube videos about the earth being flat, that must be true then
>piratebay
go back to /r/gaming zoomer
Not sure what you mean. Games that are pirated that came after the PS2 era run really bad? And I actually love older games. Some of my favorite games are SNES
>yikes
Not an argument, meme shitter
no one is trying to argue with you. you objectively are a faggot, user. imagine using fucking piratebay and UTORRENT.
No, a game like that will be an executable or ISO that needs to be installed. The problem, of course, is that an executable can do all sorts of potentially malicious shit to your computer. So you have to feel confident that what you have downloaded is legit, and not some bitcoin miner backdoor bullshit.
To do this requires a “sense”, sort of like the sense you would have when you walked into a super-sketchy store and immediately assumed it was a drug-dealing front. Experience teaches you what torrents and providers are trustworthy. If you are uncomfortable doing this, downloading non-executable content from torrents (music, movies, ROMS, books, whatever) is a great way to familiarize yourself with the process and to learn “the look of it” before you dabble in the heavy stuff (software and other executables).
I had fun with Dungeon Defenders 2
Not him, but while qb has supplanted u as the client-du-jour, TPB is still a legit source of material. There are other good places, but TPB never really became a shitty shell of its former self, it still has good and trustworthy content.
>utorrent
there is very few free as in freedom games on steam, Battle for Wesnoth is one though
I meant emulators for ps2 or later run really bad
And the guy you originally replied to was 21, so I don't think he cares for Snes like you and me do
Do you want me to write down every torrent site I know ? Piratebay is a good start.
also: Im half the years of your age on this shithole so I dont give two shits about your meme words, newfag
Nice subtle meme.
PS3 emulation recently came leaps and bounds forward (still spotty), and WiiU emulation is getting there. But yeah, past the PS2 era emulation is a struggle because as source machine power increases, the cost of emulating those instructions in another environment increases past the limit of modern CPU capacity.
Samefagging now ?
Stay mad kid
Team Fortress 2
No More Room in Hell
Warframe
once you get some money get Mount & Blade: Warband. If you can handle dated graphics you won't regret it
The best free games are Starcraft 2 and Apex Legends.
nice
Not Steam, but itch.io has lots of indie freeware shovelware.
>ctrl+f Alien Swarm
>0 results
Y'ALL BUSTAS
>guys im so old that clearly means something!!! im not 12 i swear!!!!!!!
get cancer. also any shitty torrent website you name me wont matter because i doubt you're in any legit websites and you just stick to the honeypots
>10 sec in paint
Nice
TF2 is designed in a way that the best overall guns per class are the stcok ones and CS:GO is purely cosmetics.
SC2 is best free game but it's not on steam. Gotta get battlenet for it.
Wanna know how I know that you're underaged ?
They all get triggered by age
>Zombie Panic Source
>Pirates, Vikings, and Knights 2
>Dystopia
These are my favorite free games. They don't have cash shops either. Dystopia is kind of dead, though it still gets people playing once in a while.
>guys guys!! i swear i swearr i'm not 12!! i swear!!!!!!
Wow, you're so mad that you keep repeating the same posts ?
Lmoa'ing at your life kid
If you don't mind getting your ass beat the first few campaigns, XCOM 2's really fun. If you're worried about missing out on lore from Enemy Unknown, I'll go ahead and fill you in.
>you fucked up so bad the governments of earth signed a peace treaty with the ayys
There you go.
>guys!! i SWEARR im not 12!! look! look!!! im old!! I SWEARRR!!! you're the angry one user!!!!!!
can you still get the hat? if yes, 100% worth playing. if no, avoid it
Ohhhh that really cleared it up. Yeah that makes sense. I should walk before I run. I’m guessing you can look at the comments other people post to know whether or not something is legit though right? But there could also be fake comments.
Yes I am 21 and love SNES games. Super Mario RPG is one of my favorite games and I love Chrono Trigger and the DKC trilogy and all of those. Not all “zoomers” only play Fortnite and Overwatch lol
path of exile, warframe are very good for single player autisming
>buying games
you're using a PC retard, just pirate them, that's the true power of the master race
>Zombie Panic Source
is this shit still alive?
Ah this point im not sure anymore if this is bait or you're actually autistic
Anyway, last reply for you
also there's a chance we're both on this site for far too long and get so triggered by the kids here for the last years, that we just scream at each other for no reason
But I guess we'll never know, since I leave this thread now
download a torrent app, utorrent is the most popular one, just use that I guess. Then download the games from fitgirl repacks
>But there could also be fake comments.
I guess, but you'll learn to spot them, just like you learn to spot shill amazon reviews or whatever.
Plus, miner things don't tend to have lots of seeders.
But the most important part is learning the crack groups you recognize and trust. When you see things as being released by [Specific Scene Group] that's usually a REALLY good bet that you can trust the quality of it.
>Yes I am 21 and love SNES games
But are you emulating them?
A fun fact many new people miss about Steam is that you can use its interface to add any shortcut (windows style, meaning with all command line flags) to its library of games. You can even add images like the ones Steam games get. Couple that with the fact that most emulators allow command-line arguments to boot with specific games, and you can create "game links" for every individual game in your emulation retro library.
Ice helps a lot with this (it's a macro that takes every file in your ROM library, creates a corresponding shortcut, and scrapes the Steam Banner Booru for a representative image).
pic related is my Steam library right now; as you might imagine, most of the retro games there were not purchased through Steam itself, they're just emulators booting up ROMs. But it creates a single unified games library for (theoretically) all your systems, which is really fucking cool.
That sounds really neat. Very organized. And yes I emulate snes, nes, and genesis games on my 3ds. Never bothered on PC because I like playing them on the 3ds.
What does it mean when a pirated game is “cracked” or what exactly does crack mean in relation to pirating? Same for “seeding”. I’ve heard the term seeding used a lot but don’t fully understand its meaning.
>counter strike
>free
bruh
>free
ew fuck off poorfag
Do not fucking download uTorrent and for the love of god do not use TPB. These guys are fucking retarded. Use something like BitTorrent.
stop dude
please just use qbittorent
it's at a low point but hanging on. still has active devs and a really big patch is in the works that should be coming soon too, which will hopefully bring in more players again.
>2013+6
>bittorrent
dont listen to anybody in this thread, use deluge
Why?
>Do not fucking download uTorrent
why?
"Crack" refers specifically to bypassing whatever copy protection exists on the software (so it's modified to not perform those checks), as opposed to something like a legit version of the file with a Keygen (separate software which uses an algorithm to produce a valid Software Key for authorizing the software). Having said that, the word "crack" generally also refers to any pirated software, even if said software isn't modified specifically. It's sort of like how people use the term "record" to refer to a collection of songs even if it's not on an actual vinyl record. Language is weird.
"Seeding" is part of the Bittorrent protocol. So the way BitTorrent works is, files aren't downloaded from some server, they're downloaded from a distributed network of other people. Theoretically, you can download from two kinds of people: "seeders" and "peers". Peers, like you, haven't finished downloading the file. You can get pieces from them, they can get pieces from you. You share your incomplete versions of the file to make a more complete version. "Seeders" are people who already have the complete file, but out of decency and kindness, stick around to act as a source of the full file for new downloaders.
It's good etiquette to "seed" a torrent for a little while after you're done with it, to help the next person who wants it to have access. Torrents "die" with no seeders, since no master copy of the file exists anymore.
IDK. I stopped using uTorrent when certain private trackers started rejecting it as an acceptable client... but by that time, it had become ad-bloated enough that I definitely didn't miss it. qBittorrent is the new lightweight hot-shit-big-swinging-dick client, just use that.
its the one i use
Learn to Fly 3 (flash game kino)
Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls
Ultra Fight Da Kyanta 2
NitorInc: Touhou Microgames (demo only so far)
Narcissu 1 & 2 (if you like VNs)
Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion
Use qBittorrent, download from pcgamestorrents, use magnet links, seed at least 1 copy. Warez groups provide readmes with instructions, you may need Daemon Tools, get the lite version, and in case you're a complete dingus make sure you have 7zip.
Spend a dollar for a humble each month and get a pretty nice load of games.
Get the Valve Complete Pack, Gmod, Risk of Rain (1 or 2), and Lethal League (1 or 2). All are exceptional games.
just a heads up op, if a game you want is on gog.com you can pirate it a lot more easily because you just need the official installer and that's it, so look for the gog versions of games if you can and make sure their digital signature is gog's
celeste is bad because it's the kind of platformer that makes you die again and again until your muscle memory does the level for you
epic is bad because they do a lot of harm to the industry
csgo is "free"
shit i didn't know you could do that
>pcgamestorrents, aka igg games
yeah enjoy your miners
>daemon tools
ohohoho
Gosh that’s a lot to digest. But I’m glad you explained it in such detail. I tried looking into pirating Zoo Tycoon the other day and had no clue what I was doing but now I think I get it a little better.
What are magnet links and warez groups? And I got 7zip
>shit i didn't know you could do that
It's the best. I'm austistic about library organization so I had Steam for that when I literally had only one game on Steam (Antichamber) and it's rapidly evolved into "this is my entire fucking game library". It doesn't have EVERY game I've ever played, but at this point it's got to be 90%.
It's even better now that Steam has per-game controller rebindings. Nowadays, Retroarch does that (and I feel like all emulation should be done through Retroarch) but back when I started, that was a huge fucking boon for emulators especially.
magnet links are links you open with your torrent client to download a torrent, alternatively you can get the torrent file itself and open that in the client
warez groups are groups that release cracked versions of games basically, there's a lot of different ones like codex and skidrow
The people who do the cracking, eg Razor911 and SKIDROW are warez groups. Magnet links are safer, that's all you need to know.
a magnet link is like an online version of a torrent file. A torrent file itself is just a "link" to the group of people who are seeding/peers... a magnet link provides this data directly to your torrent client without having to download a file onto your computer for the torrent client to read to find this stuff. Think of it like a hyperlink for the software format; instead of downloading the torrent "URL", it just feeds directly into the software. Most trackers only supply magnets these days.
>warez groups
it's a 1337 h4x0r term for people who create pirated software. Why pirated software is called "warez" is a linguistic tale of the same caliber as why "keep it 100" means "tell the truth" in niggerverbiage... suffice it to say, "warez groups" or "scene groups" just refers to named groups of people who have made a sort of faux-career of cracking various software. There are different groups for different kinds of media; I know in the music software realm, there are certain groups who are responsible for most cracks... in games, it's different groups. They do it to swing their dicks around and/or for the fun of it.
TF2 launched as a standard paid game. Loot boxes and F2P were added on years later. It only really affects hats. You can get weapon drops just by playing the game. All weapons are worth like 2-3 cents on the community market.
i meam, i does sound cool, but you still do launch the games through another layer on top of the emulator, and adding the roms i have will add about 3k (or maybe 4?) games to my library. wouldn't really benefit me overall to have that but i like that you can do it
This is true... and with 3k fucking games (Jesus christ) it may not be practical unless you make heavy use of Steam's tagging functionality. Which, Ice defaults to tagging by console, but since you can't really do multi-tagging with Steam's library, that's not really helpful.
I enjoy it, but I enjoy it because I browse my games library as games. I have like 500 right now, including all my Steam stuff... I can't imagine quadrupling the size of that.
>yfw Retroarch is soon going to be released on Steam
TF2 is one of the most fair free games out there. Special weapons all have drawbacks that make standard equipment very good.
don't remind me
I don't understand why I would want that. Yes, Retroarch is cool as fuck, but the real appeal is using the shortcuts for each game. I don't want to boot "Retroarch", I want to boot Super Mario 64.
Now, if Retroarch-for-Steam has its own version of an Ice-style macro to add game links to Steam, I might take the plunge on that. I'm already porting all my PCSXR links backward to Retroarch links to use Beetle, it's rapidly supplanting every emulator I have as the de-facto source, since most devs are more focused on their libretro cores than their standalones at this point.
I have a lot of recs... Metal Gear Online, the online part of MGSV is fun(we need more players lol), also Arma 3 for a hyper realistic military FPS experience. CSGO and TF2 if you want the traditional newbie Steam experience. Oh yeah and I highly recommend Trails in the Sky if you like JRPGs. There are a lot of $5 indie games that are quite good as well, check out Super Hexagon if you have a few bucks left over.
So you don't care about actually playing the games, you just want to show your Steam friends your epic gamer cred.
>the online part of MGSV is fun
last time i played it was a laggy clusterfuck
OP here. Thanks for all the info and recommendations everyone. This was a big help. Goodnight and God bless
Non-Steam games added to Steam don't show up in your "Steam stats" (I wish it tracked play time for my own reasons, but it doesn't) and I have like 1 Steam friend anyway.
The reason I want per-game launch links is it makes library perusal more natural. When Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon shows up alongside Myst IV, I'm more likely to play it scrolling through. If my only "link" to all my retro games is a single RetroArch link, then my decision is between "all my games, or Some Emulated Game" and then choosing from there. Having the full library of titles is a great way to go "you know what? I haven't played Mischief Makers in a while that sounds fun".
The more you consolidate multiple games to a single title, the less likely I am to play it. Consolidating several hundred games to a single "entry" is a terrible approach to that state of affairs.
bye bye op here's a goodnight kiss mwah
SCP: Secret Laboratory
>What are the best free games on Steam?
Warframe
Smite
Spiral Knights is a hidden gem, pretty good game
>Been a console gamer forever. What are the best free games on Steam?
so you're moving from shit to more shit
this is your opportunity to buy classic pc vidya, rpgs, fps, rts, etc, they are very cheap and especially so during sales. if you can't do that, pirate.
he said he was 21 you retard, if you think that's "so old" then you really are underaged as fuck
>What are the best free games on Steam?
The free games are not on steam silly
1337x.to/popular-games
Why ask for free games when you can play stuff you're actually interested in, regardless of whether it's free or not? I was going to say BallisticNG but I see it's paid now, except for those who downloaded/installed it while it was free.
Like all information. This stuff is only worth something when it can be connected and collated into profiles, isolated data points are worth nothing. Private data, documents, finance and creditworthiness, network stuff like IP and MAC addresses, used devices (that have ever been connected with your computer) and all your contacts, all your social media accounts, browsing history, political and world view, health data etc. etc. the more Tencent can vacuum up for the Chinese government the more power it has over people both inside and outside of their borders in order to have a stab at world domination. China realized some years ago it wasn't just military might that made the West powerful, but information, so now they want it all, and rather than being used to fuck people out of their healthcare or raise their premiums or grant or deny loans so financial institutions can manage risks so well they can print risk-free free money in perpetuity, it'll be used for more nefarious purposes by the Chinese government.
If you don't care about any of this and don't mind being made subservient to Xi Jinping in the long run then go for it. I have it installed for UE4 because I don't have a choice there and that was before Sweeney sold out to Tencent so it's too late for me but I've never played a game through it, only retail/Steam/GOG/piracy. Not because I wouldn't, there simply hasn't been a game on it that was enticing enough.
At least 75% of the PS2 library works at an almost perfect level on past gen pcs, the only real problem is finding your optimal configuration. You may need to sacrifice graphics in some games to be able to run them at more than 60 stable fps, but the catalog is very playable
warframe and path of exile come to mind
sometimes there is shit I find more easily on tpb than 1337x or rutracker etc. tpb is a classic and golden
tpb is a honeypot
Does that mean anything for people not living in burgerland?
it doesn't mean anyhting to anyone cause it's not even a honeypot. there's 0 law enforcement motive to spend resources trying to stop piracy
glowies are coming for you
TF2
Yume Nikki
Naissancee went free last year
If you include demos, the Zeno clash demo is pretty good.
i use rt torrent
