In the good old days Japanese were not at the edge of technology, they were making cheap knockoffs of American designs (like China does now).

One such case is Dragon Quest and subsequently ALL JRPGs. In 1983 Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura attended a computer show in San Francisco, where they first play Wizardry. They love it, so when they go back to Japan they buy it and decide to create a game like it.

Now, the way most people tell the story paints them under a positive light. This is absolute bollocks. Basically, they ripped off Wizardry’s system, but they dumbed it down (some people claim this to be a stroke of genius, FFS) and Ultima’s overhead view. They pretty much ripped everything off Wizardry and Ultima III (especially that): combat system, random encounters, maps, you name it. The difference was the graphics style, which was created by Akira-the cliché of Anime crapness-Toriyama. All in all a substandard, cheap, knockoff.

All JRPGs since then cloned a clone. But computer RPGs moved significantly since 1983 (a date the Japanese are still stuck too). Garriott introduced morality and a keyword based conversation system in the next Ultima instalment and removed random encounters. Computer RPGs moved away from the usual dungeon crawl hack’n’slash towards the attempt to allow players to role play. They were given moral choices, freedom to explore and act as they pleased, etc. Combat systems evolved as well, with some games moving towards real time combat. Other games introduced NPCs who were acting independently through the game world (like Wizardry VII).

All these developments were lost to the Japanese, who continue to make Wizardry III and Ultima III clones to this day.

Fave cod game and which platform? I don't tend to buy them yearly but I keep an eye on them as I'm always intrigued. I adored WW2 when I picked it up last June and have mixed feelings about BO4.

CoD for me was always in this grey area of either being propaganda or satire. It is the only series that features the Angolan Civil War, the Invasion of Panama. Even though it's got some ACOGs in Vietnam, these conflicts or crises are never displayed in other brown & blooms.

Not to mention it's the only game where you can fight in Angola, or literally support the Taliban in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets.
Not only that, some pretty damn good sound design for the weapons and nice soundtrack.
On top of that it had a pretty good story instead of going full DUDEBRO like many other games of its era.
Gunplay was also better than some bullshit like battlefield 5 or EA battlefront

Call of Duty was actually highly regarded when it first came out, up until that point virtually all military shooters were a one man army special operations affair, especially Medal of Honor which was CoD's direct predecessor and where most of its developers came from. CoD put you in the boots of an everyday infantryman and threw you right into the middle of a heated battle with hundreds of other equally worthless schmucks, its design was revolutionary at the time when virtually all shooters were essentially just skin packs for Half-Life.

The series was able to maintain this identity and structure up until Modern Warfare 2 where it became too involved in its own story and characters and began to regress.

As someone who's been around since the very first inception, It's been interesting watching Call of Duty turn into the very thing it was originally conceived as an answer to.

CoD4 has huge balance problems though. There's little reason to use any gun other than the AK47, M16, Desert Eagle or a sniper rifle. The perk system is just as bad.

Black ops 2 has the same issue as all the other post modern CoD titles in that the pacing is way to fast for the plots to have real meaning and the difficulty is still that MW2 baby shit.
The strike missions were a decent idea but if you arent playing on the baby mode the AI soldiers just die instantly to enemies and its amounts to pretty much waiting till you get the heavy armor then rolling all resistance
