Pretty much. Shame he often got saddled with bad video games to show off his music chops.
Well Solstice is pretty good, just hard as fuck. I hear the Ecco game he composed for is good too but I never played it.
How much time passed between the release of those two titles though, i'm not sure they even had trackers working at launch
What are trackers?
That's nothing, the zx spectrum literally had one sound channel that was either on or off and he was able to produce this shit
How did he do it? I hear multiple sound channels in that song.
Tim Follin said he never cared about video games and it shows. All his music sounds the same.
soul
soulless
black magic fuckery
I honestly don't know, I'm sure someone can enlighten us.

His Wikipedia article is extremely in depth and yet I cannot find anything saying that he "never cared about video games."
...Wow.
Tim Follin is based, but I'm more of a Dean Evans guy.

It's possible to create the illusion of multiple voices on a single voice by rapidly switching between different waveforms.
youtu.be
it has a single channel OUTPUT, meaning that if you played that same clip back on the original hardware it wouldn't be able to 'reproduce' the audio the same way. has nothing to do with the songwriting process.
The crazy shit they did there was the ridiculous compression and other fancy techniques to smash that much audio data on to the tiny storage chips of the time.
As for me, I'm all about the composer of this classic tune.

What the fuck, I haven't played this game but I've heard this music somewhere. Is there some newer video game that has a remix of this or something? It sounds so familiar.
warez maybe
That would actually make sense. You know even if it's not that I'm going to pretend it is just to put my mind at ease.
Meanwhile on genesis

Defender of the Future has a good concept behind it, but the game design is a bit different from 2D Ecco and I don't think it was properly realised. The levels are also kinda small and Ecco's controls were awkward.
So THIS is the famous Doom soundtrack... disappointing.
you can do some pretty impressive shit with limited hardware if you get creative youtube.com

what what WHAT??!
Rape accusation when?
Man, they didn't even try to hide that they ripped off Loudness for that Thunder Force song.

Twenty minutes of Tim talking about his work. I thought it was a good watch for anyone that ever wanted to know a bit more about the guy who made for Pictionary.

My personal favorite has got to be Gambit's Theme though. Or maybe something from Plok, or Equinox.

You think that's bad?

What's wrong with you people?
I haven't watched this AVGN video so it can't be this, but I have watched a number of AVGN videos. Is it possible he uses it as background music for one of his other videos that's unrelated to Ninja Gaiden?
Possibly. But it's more likely some other eceleb used it in some video you watched.
it's a pretty popular song youtube.com
Well that would not cover a wide range because the only other ecelebs I have ever watched are Dunkey and a couple JonTron videos, so maybe that helps narrow it down.
Honestly my my experience with this game was so depressing
>Watch the intro video with this amazing music playing
>Explains this cool futuristic world, get really interested
>Look into it further
>Find out it was cancelled
>Then find out it was based on a TV Show
>Then find out the whole plot of the show is that the main character goes back in time to the modern day so this futuristic world they've established means squat
I think the ROM got dumped but I don't even care
This is exactly like those joke videos called '[x] but it's bass boosted 500%'
Man I am 100% sure this ROM was dumped long before you even heard about it, that's the whole reason why we even have the music despite it being canceled. I'm not sure why you spent so much time reading about the game instead of just downloading it and ended up depriving yourself of a... well, probably not a very good game honestly. Tim Follin is famous for making great music for mediocre games. You know what else is fucking annoying, is Star Ocean, a game that teases you with a sci-fi setting only for 90% of the game to have a fantasy setting, because they immediately time travel into the past or something.
Urgh, I don't think I've listened to this band but this does make it sound more familiar, so I'm sure I must have heard a cover somewhere. This is going to drive me insane.
This song already kind of sucks so they couldn't have made it too much wors-
youtube.com
Oh. Oh no.
And yet none of them manage to be as bad as this.

Holy shit I actually cracked up when the '''''guitar''''' kicked in, what the fuck happened
I can only imagine it was a similar thing to , they must have at least fucked up the key it was supposed to be 'programmed' in
Imagine waking up to find yourself in this situation.
The same way how a video game system with this kind of music:

Was also capable of this

All because cartridges were more than just a method of data storage.
I Wanna be the Boshy?
Here's your late 3rd gen video game soundtrack, bro.
youtube.com
What's even more amazing is that this is music for a cute 'em up where you play as a broomstick-riding witch. You'd expect some girly shit but nope, time to rock out.
PC Engine's such an unfortunate console because it was hyped up and made to be the ultimate 3rd gen console but got immediately overshadowed and had to compete with 4th gen consoles with better hardware.
But the soundtracks were killer.
youtube.com
That's cheating because PC Engine Super CD-ROM supported, as you can guess, CD-quality music. It wipes the floor with every other version of Cotton, especially the original arcade.

For me it's the PC-88 sound chip

I wonder what the actual fuck happened with music in Sonic Chronicles, it's by far the worst vidya soundtrack I've ever heard, worse than any chink bootleg.
youtube.com
what's that terrible kirby track that gets posted in bad VGM threads?
What's really weird about Sonic Chronicles is that the battle themes clearly have some actual work put into them so they clash massively with the rest of the soundtrack. Listen to this:
youtube.com
I don't know if it's true but I heard something about how they lost the rights to the music at the last minute and that's why everything is awful MIDI covers of classic Sonic themes. But if that's true I guess they still kept the rights to some songs if stuff like the aforementioned song remains.
>what's that terrible kirby track that gets posted in bad VGM threads?
Here you go.
youtube.com
How the fuck.
Damn, I want to play this game solely because of that music. I see it's a shmup and those tend to be playable without knowing the language but I was kind of hoping it would turn out to have an English patch. Oh well. What's odd though is that there IS a YouTube video with a full English translation so there is an English option out there. Reminds me of what I used to do with Touhou games before they started having robots make English patches on day 1, I would open the translation on the wiki alongside the game and just read it as I was reading the dialogue in game. Eventually even though the games had translations I would just play them in Japanese first, because the stage names looked more aesthetically pleasing in Japanese, like calligraphy or something.
It's safe to say that Liz loves this music.
sequel when??
Fun fact about the electric guitar samples in that song. Most of what you hear during the guitar solo isn't a guitar patch, but rather a synth patch. The guitar patch is only used for a very short bit to give a semi-authentic distortion effect, then it switches to the synth sample for the rest of a note's duration. It's a pretty clever trick.
I think it didn't do too well and was pretty expensive to make for an indie game. I remember hearing that Her Story cannibalized its sales but I don't know if that's just woman hating nonsense.
>Terrible
for me it's
youtu.be
Since I'm going to bed I will actually admit that is one of my favorite Kirby songs ever and I was curious if I could get people to agree it's terrible just by claiming it's terrible in an authoritative tone.
He literally made NES sound like SNES. Fucking based.
