Eh they still only meet 3 times in the original. 4 times if you play Leon A. They just communicated via radio more and the final act really felt like they were actively working together to escape. RE2make ditched the parallel story the original had so like RE1, the other character is mostly offscreen since they simply couldn't be bothered. The 2nd runs wasn't part of the release plan.
