the story is epliogue at start of the file and that's it this is all you get for beating super boss, they added so much filler to get there you literally just fight same reused enemies over n over

So I just realized that taking pictures of certain things in earlier chapters nets you spoilers. I went back to Chapter 1 to take pictures of all the Nemesis Legions and it spoils how they reappear since the gallery assumes you took the picture when they show up to be captured.

My fellow ORAbro. I murderlized the boss of the level you get it on, I just ORA>Rocket Punched him to death, in what I assume is way less time than using the bow or sword.

Arrow and Sword are the best. I have been thoroughly unimpressed with both arm and beast so far. Based largely on the fact I don't really like their sync attacks very much.

only used arm for the mini bosses with bubble shields and beast for the invisible floating enemies

Really fun so far, I love how much your moveset opens up and how much the game rewards exploration. I just found out you can make your Legion hold the camera and that's pretty great too

Final boss is so much harder than the rest of the game it's actually fucking baffling. I never had to use a Defibrilator Battery the entire game, and then I fucking used ALL of them for the final boss.
The ending was extremely abrupt. Luckily there's a postgame to kind of put a cap on it. A sequel would be very easy story-wise, though it seems the game bombed.
Favorite chapter was probably File 7. The entire setpiece of chasing the huge Humonculous through the city was beautiful. Just watching it wreak havoc was insane.
Story was overall pretty weak. I'm still a bit confused what Either Joseph or Jena wanted to achieve. It seems mostly typical JRPG/anime villain bullshit anyway. Nothing was really answered in the end though, especially about the Astral Plane or Chimeras, nor was The three figures Joseph spoke to early on in the game ever brought up again.

The combat is pretty great. It definitely doesn't have the depth of the likes of Bayo/DMC/W101, but it brings something new to the table and I like it.

I loved the investigations, though I wonder if they'll be a slog on repeat playthroughs.
I love just exploring with the Legions. The Legions are just as fun outside combat as they are in it.

The dodge. I do not like the dodge in this game. It's so fucking bad. It doesn't ruin the combat, but it puts in a dent in what is a great combay system.
Stuns. Fire/Stun/Freeze just leave it out, please.
The reuse of areas. Budget as fuck. I think you revisit Harmony Square like 4 times. 1/3 of the Files take place in one area. That's fucking pathetic.

The Astral Plane itself is so droll. They couldn't even like tint the shit yellow sometimes or something. It's sad because it's fun to move around and explore in them thanks to the Legions, but fuck is it just so boring to look at.

There are so many ways to ORA. Get in armbro (L1) and after a basic combo he will punch combo. And besides the one you mentioned there's a skill that you unlock in the skill tree which is that on a designated target.

Did it? It's near sold-out in my area, I met several other people searching high and low for a copy when I was going around. If it's bombed, it's the fault of the retailers for not stocking enough.

Just doing a bit of handkerchief estimation, I'd say it's done 100k-500k copies already, which is pretty good in two days.

i largely agree with your post (though i haven't beaten the game yet so i can't speak about the final boss or ending) but personally i find the cop shit boring as sin so my score probably goes half a point lower or a full point on a bad day

I found the platforming kinda spotty at times, like you'll clearly place your legion in a spot to jump to but you'll randomly still overshoot it and go off a cliff or you'll bump into an inch of wall and not make your jump. The cliffs and stage hazards in general are really obnoxious and just seem like they're there to piss you off.

I feel like i'm too dumb for that one part in file 8.
Where the fuck is "where the light shines in the labyrinth"?

It's less about the boss's health and more about the fact that nearly all of his attacks just outright murder you. He has a 1 hit kill that can spawn on top of you, a laser beam that does 3/4th of your health, and on his last phase he has this pummel attack that just permastuns you until you're dead. It was ridiculous.

I actually liked the boss before the finall boss more the core, was damn trippy and cool, not that the final boss was bad or anything, just an insane difficulty spike.

It's later on in the chapter. I was so confused because I thought it was in the starting area too, spent like an hour looking around before giving up. There's a labyrinth later on in the area, you'll know when you enter. Follow those steps from the beginning of the labyrinth.

The Investigation phase of File 8 was such a fucking drag. I did the Box Balancing one, then tried the Rush Hour clone with terrible controls and got so fed up I decided to skip through the whole thing. Only to see that the rest of the chapter is literally cleaning up redshift on a timer. Most boring chapter.

Fill it up with the Neuron officers. It was heartwarming because it started out with Lappy saluting, then showing Jin, then Marie, then suddenly it was just my character posing like an idiot for 15 pictures straight. Kind of ruined the moment.

This desu. I like the game so far, but there's just something off with the feedback. Doesn't feel that good to hit monsters. Only some sync attacks feel good.

It made me sad seeing the goop and snake chimeras and remembering that they were originally planned to be playable. Would have been really interesting.

Don't know if I can get behind non-60 fps in a Platinum game and the hub/overworld looks dull as shit, is it padded with fetch-quests and such?

there is no overworld just different areas the hub is just the small HQ which is your base
it has blue cases which are optional side quests and they have your usual go here, talk to this person, collect this etc but it does have quite a few unique ones
they give you items and duty points which at the end of the chapter goes to your rank which increases your health

So if I miss something in a chapter, do I have to play through the entire chapter again or is there a way I can just go back to the thing that I missed then continue the story from where I left off when I'm done?

just got the arm legion, it's cool, still a 7/10 so far.

there are also red cases which are optional. And there are blue cases that aren't.
It's categorized more as blue case=non combat/not rated and red case=combat/rated. there's also stuff like carrying cardboard boxes which have a rating

if you redo files it's split in parts, but you still have to redo that whole part.

most of the optional red cases i found were gates which i would say is more of a challenge than a quest

i lied. i just tried it for the first fight in the last part of file 2. S+ ranked the fight, quit out and the rating still got updated for that fight while everything else stayed the same of the result screen. So you actually only have to replay parts until the case you want to improve.
You get shit for cash though since you lose a lot of your pay for not clearing any chapter on the result screen.

It's not going too good.
I keep getting D and C ranks, and can only get S+ occasionally, when it's a battle in an open area that doesn't have you fall off or dodge into map hazards on accident, since the dodge feels so crappy and unreliable, and the camera is a real pain at times, and its draining my motivation to keep playing.
Why play a video game that keeps reminding you of the fact that you're shit at it every couple minutes?

This non voiced protag shit should stop. it works fine in very rare occasions, Zelda and Pokemon comes to mind, but when your character is mute when everyone is fucking voiced and cutscenes are a thing, then it just sounds stupid. It makes the exact opposite of self inserting to me. Way to miss what they were going for. And who the fuck self inserts as a cop in 2077 fighting eldritch abominations? Stop with that shit already.

I hate those stupid enemies that keep tethering themselves to others, making them invincible, until you drop current target, manually aim with sword slash/arrow/dog at them to remove invincibility, while 5 other guys keep hitting you from outside of the screen.

I'm pretty far in, and I have a basic grasp of the combat by this point, I can beat regular enemies in regular enviroments and get decent ranks just fine, but it doesn't even matter much, since the game keeps throwing new shit I don't know how to deal with at every opportunity, and by the time I figured out what's the correct approach my rank is already in the shitter.

I'm on file 6 at the stealth section
So far i had a few camera issues, especially with flying ennemies in closed spaces but nothing too problematic.
My only actual issue would be the dodge, i just can't get it consistently, i don't know if it's just the timing or the hitboxes but it's really weird

oh god the stealth section, probably not the best part of the game.

just started case 3 and almost benching it, combat isn't clicking with me at all.

i noticed it doesnt cancel out actions as well or as quick as youd expect in an action game and being reactionary in a stylish way basically never works. you have to dodge relatively early instead of just at the very last few frames. even then if the enemy has a followup attack you're probably screwed anyway, since the time between the dodge and the roll is about a 3 weeks difference, fuck the fact that you managed a perfect dodge in the best direction possible anyway.

It gets a lot better after case 2 onward.
First two cases i was like "what is this shit"

you can fight your way through it in that file so it's not bad but the second one in a later file was dumb

I just spent like an hour in the training room until the combat started to click with me. It's hard to get used to at first but once you get the hang of it it's a lot of fun.

Great, I use it a lot

apparently slows down its speed and the rate at which it auto attacks

All it really does is disables your ability to change your legion's coloring till you clean them off. Can't recolor them if they're covered in red shift. It can also decay their attack if you leave them covered in red shift for too long as well, but I've only noticed like a point or two drop even after like 5 hours of not cleaning the Arm one, and it's got the most drastic of attacks from the bunch.

You know how when those wolfs howl they fucking stagger and stun you? Yeah. That good but on everything beyond a few bosses in the game.
I perfer Power Charge + the buff even if dismissed combo myself though, as it's just call and sync afterwards is really good, and a quick chain right after that leads into pretty silly stuff.

Once I remembered the Sword Legion can cancel the enemies attacks the first form was super trivial but the Beast Legion was the MVP in that fight.

How do you get an S+ on Akira Unchained? Even if I finish the fight in 1 minute I get a D rank because there are almost no bonus points for everything. Do you actually have to speedrun that boss while also taking 0 damage?

Just redo the first chapter and pick the guy, then continue on from whatever chapter you were doing before that

in general you have to do everything pretty much possible in the shortest amount of time while pressing the button on every sync
no losing points so getting hit doesn't matter and also try sticking to crit dmg only

You can't do most of the regular stuff in that fight because of plot reasons. There literally are no synchs at all in it.

The Astral Plane is like an Akashic Record.
It details everything that lives and stores them inside itself, all those phased-out red people you see inside are the bio/data residuals left by people that have been brought into the Astral Plane.
Chimeras are the archivers in a weird way. They take people into the Astral Plane to record their existence at the time of retrieval.
Its what they did to the planet outside of the Ark.

Compared to other platinum games, Astral Chain's scoring system is very different. I've had a boss drain two batteries and I still ended up with an S+ afterwards. On the other hand, the ranking for some of the minigame sections really leave no room for error.

Jena's "we can win as we are" implies that she was going to use the Astral Plane and Chimeras to both catalogue the humans and merge them with Chimeras like herself Using that drug she developed.
She was trying to save the world but didn't agree with the alternative plan, hers was far from perfect but with it she would've made people able to live on Earth, the Astral Plane and stop them from becoming Aberrations.
Her Homunculi were an attempt to see if biological material could survive the merge with Chimeras it seems.

Anyone done the second car pushing puzzle in file 8? Spent about 2 hours on this so far and doesn't seem like there's actually a possible solution. The only possible moves at the start completely block off the bus from moving anywhere useful.

Generally the combat and arenas are great but some of these are kinda bullshit. When you go into the bow mode you can press down the R stick to go into "Focus mode" which slows downtime, and your arrows travel faster. Note that it drains your meter faster though.

Ranking for files is just based on all your case scores combined. If you have S+ in every case you get an S+ File but even having a single S case will drop your File down to S. I did the early Files with S+ so far and I had that happen before. I think cases you have not done at all are either counted as a D rank or worse.

I wish you could skip directly to whatever case you want instead of to a chapter checkpoint. But at least you do not actually have to finish the level once you got an S+ on the case. Just selecting "File Option" is enough to exit the level with the case score saved permanently. Otherwise this would have been extremely frustrating.

Have you actually tried replaying a file? Each file is very generously split into multiple parts.
And it saves the highest rank for each individual case so you don't have to keep replaying it until you get that perferct all S+ run like in bayo.

You won't because Casual is too easy. That alone makes Standard the go to Mode. Also ranks should only be worried about after you beat the game, because then you can go back and get higher ranks easier with all of your acquired tools and skills.

I played on PT Standard and I found it pretty easy most of the time. I don't want to imagine what casual mode must be like.

It starts with nothing. Combat progressively expands out in a big way.
You're still (basically) working with one/two button combos, but the depth comes more in balancing all the movement shit you do for damage and cycling through your damage options in order to maximize score.

yeah man it's really good. Most of the criticisms I've seen are just nitpicking too. There's really not many good reasons to not enjoy the game. People will bitch and moan about framerate and shit but I don't think going up to 60FPS would have really benefitted the game too much. You can see everything on the screen just fine. You need 10,000 points for an S+. You either do the fight as fast as possible (the time bonus can be enough to give you a perfect grade), or you getbonuses which work like Super Smash Bros. points, where you use certain gimmicks in the fight. Finally, if you just don't get hit, you get a bonus that's worth 5000 points, which is usually easily enough to clear S+.

Not sure yet. Using a bunch of sync attacks well gives you 2000, finishers give you 500, perfect call gives you 1000. I think dodging like shit gets you Faulty Footwork, which is 100 as opposed to 1000 for dodging cleanly. I also think mashing sync attacks penalizes you by giving you the lesser bonus. Using skills and using multiple legions also gets you bonuses, as does multi-chains and chain counters.

Is there something I'm missing to get better damage output other that trying to keep the legion out of trouble to maximize its uptime ? Right now my own hits are doing a pitiful 10 damage per hit, will there be a way to upgrade my damage later on ?

Yes, you can talk to the woman in the tech room near the training room in the HQ to upgrade your weapons and legion apparatus.

10k is not actually the S+ requirement in every case. Some cases will randomly require more points. I didn't notice this either until I checked through all my case rankings.

No. In that case, don't worry about rankings for now. About the only thing you can do to optimize is keep your legion behind the enemy so they're backstabbing and you don't have to get them out of the way as much. Stuff will open up in the next file.

I have to say, this game has really surprised me. I thought it was shit in the beginning, but it's turned out to be very good, just a horrendous start to an otherwise good game.
It isn't directly recreating anything. This is Platinum we're talking about, niggas made The Wonderful 101 and Astral Chain is a return to form for them. The gameplay is genuinely unique and creatively designed

I've found it pretty easy so far playing on Platinum Standard difficulty, (normal) I've only lost all my HP once.
However, sometimes the game can feel cheap because of how fast and crowded it can be and because of the 30fps some hits feel unfair.

I literally never play action games like this, and I’m really liking it so far, I just finished file 2 on PT Standard. I have a few issues that are kinda taking away some of the fun though:
>Camera system really isn’t great for multiple enemies, it has a bad habit of zooming on you and the single targeted enemy, meaning you can’t react to anything else
>Dodging isn’t reliable, since some enemies do multiple strikes. This is bad because your instinct would be dodge, then attack. Instead, you have to dodge and be ready to keep dodging just in case, and that kinda breaks up the combat too much. Thankfully you can just remember which attacks have multiple hits and dodge, but it’s basically trial and error at first
>Chain jumping is kinda clunky
>Some fights are way too hectic and lead to just mashing the attack button until you can actually tell what’s happening again

Overall, it’s pretty great.

For me at least, it was hard as shit in the beginning, became very easy as I unlocked sync attacks and Zandatsu, then the final boss mopped me hard for hours

Game honestly plays like shit up until File 4, where it really comes into being. Typical Platinum "Let's hold everything back for the first 5 hours of the game" type shit, but it's even worse in Astral Chain.

I highly recommend going for Sync Chain Attack, Perfect Call, and Perfect Call Sync Chain Attack as soon as possible when leveling your legions. Auto Bind and their unique special abilities too (round sword for sword legion can carry you through the game). Hit Rush is also amazing.

So much shit locked behind unlockables, that's the problem. I understand Platinum's "We expect you to play through multiple times", but this isn't 8 hour long Bayonetta or 5 hour long DMC anymore. This shit is like 20 hours long. Wonderful 101 had the same problem.

On the rooftop next to you there's a piece of something jutting out. I was able to get my legion on top of it and jump to the legion, which I could then walk along it close enough to send my legion to that chest. Take a picture of the other building and I'll point it out if you still can't figure it out.

I don't know if this is how you're supposed to do it, but I went to the building on the left, led the Legion around the barrier/vent, then jumped to him and managed to get pulled over the barrier.

Yeah I feel the rate at which you get more options unlocked is too slow. Certain things like perfect call feel so integral thats its weird you need to get it again for each legion.

Wonderful 101 wasn't nearly as bad as AC in this regard because it at least felt good to play right from the get go. You just didn't have a lot of shit to do, but it still felt good. AC legitimately feels like shit until you get your super powers and that can take hours.

Is there a point to switching through the legions in combat? Unless I specifically need a certain ability, why can’t I just use the sword guy for everything?

Pretty frustrating experience, i feel like the first playthrough is just a trial run because every now and again you get to points that are really frustrating until you figure out the gimmick.
And best controls like shit, really not that fun to use right now.

Is there any reason to use the standard baton or gun after unlocking the sword? I'm on chapter 5 and I've been using the sword exclusively because it stuns the fuck out of everything. Baton is stated in game to be good against fast moving target's, but the swing speed is unnecessary when you're double pounding enemies with your stand. I can knock enemies out of the air by jumping to them, so the gun sucks, too.

I mostly switch between the axe and sword legion. I think you actually get more points if you use multiple legions in a fight.

Around 15 hours or so, and combat is fun.

The Akira at the end is actually one of the clones who was found in the research center. He doesn't have any memories about the final boss fight. You can talk to him on the roof and they mention stuff about him in the intro cutscene of chapter 12. Real Akira is gone for good.

I'm 17 hours in and only at the end of case 7, granted i explore a lot but still missing a bunch of shit.

The protagonist is less human at the end than they are at the start, something of a human-Legion hybrid by the end thanks to the Sync Form.
