Copy Toukiden so it can have a group of senrans fighting large Yomas. Toukiden specifically because it has flashy anime movesets for its weapons while still being simple. It also focused on breaking limbs/weakpoints that sometimes changed how the monster fought. Online coop to help other people or to just show off how your customize your senran.
Make the hub a small area to wander in so you can talk to the other senrans in the party. This way they can do small dialogue between everyone. As you bond, you get new dialogue, cutscenes/VN segments, and a mission. Like others have said, people want more interactions.

The reason they're considered musous in general conversation is because the gameplay is the exact same with one gimmick (Aerial Raves) if you remove the base offense/defense stuff. You have enormous groups of cannon fodder that die in one or two hits that you kill by the hundreds, you have combos based on how many times you do light attacks before you go into strong attacks, you have special attacks based on meter, there's cancels, and you fight a major boss at the end of each stage. Kamen Rider has a game that's basically the exact same formula minus the base defending/capturing and everyone considers it a musou as well. When you say it's a 3D beat 'em up people think God Hand or Yakuza where you're focusing on less than a couple enemies at best, throwaway mooks still take multiple hits to kill, and specials are much harder to come by in comparison.

That's one defining thing. The other is slaughtering mooks effortlessly on a battlefield by the dozens if not hundreds, long combo strings, keeping up a combo, leveling your character up to sweep enemies even quicker, and so on. The base stuff is definitely a major part of the genre, but the vast majority of the other mechanics you would see in a typical musou are there, especially the "Killing enemies by the dozens in one attack" thing. It leans far more towards the musou side than just a random beat 'em up game. Compare the gameplay of SK to something like God Hand or even DMC for that matter despite both being different variants of the genre (The former being a beat 'em up, the latter being more of an action game). Hell, compare it to No More Heroes and even that has Travis killing less mooks than a musou game does and way slower.

Which is what every other musou game asks you to do. They want you to keep combos up while slaughtering mooks by the dozens. If I showed you a DW game or even a variant like Sengoku Basara where a guy is just attacking random mooks and then showed you SK you would be seeing the same thing in the general structure. The difference would be on the DW/SB side eventually he would run to an area to capture it which eventually susses out the boss while the SK side runs mostly in a straight line to the boss and launches enemies into the air to juggle them occasionally.

There is a very big difference in gameplay between a DMC (Where you have smaller amounts of enemies that have larger HP pools and want you to focus on combos and dodging) and the musou genre (Where you have swathes of enemies you clear with little to no effort, potentially with a focus on keeping up a combo, that usually has one or two gimmicks to differentiate itself). Burst and SK2 are the ones that fit a beat 'em up definition far more as you only fight less than a handful of enemies on screen at a time, they have large amounts of health even if they're mooks, and it focuses more on evading and retaliating than cleaving through your enemies.

I'm unsure how you don't see the same gameplay structure there when you're effortlessly cutting through dozens if not hundreds of enemies but a game like DMC struggles to cut through 1 in multiple hits.

If I were to tell you SK plays like God Hand would you agree outside of the most basic sense? like I said, all 3 subgenres branch off of beat em ups but SK has more in common with the traditional beat em ups than musous which really need the area control aspect to distinguish them from traditional beat em ups. Literally the difference between SK and traditional beat em ups is more enemies and in the versus games a 3rd dimension. If I play Estival Versus and Hyrule Heroes back to back, which I've done recently, I note I play them each pretty diffefrently. Hyrule Heroes I'm backtracking areas a lot and keeping an eye on the minimap, saving NPC companions, and farming some captain tier characters for drops. I feel like I'm half playing a strategy game on top of beating things up.
In SK I just beat up what's in front of me, sometimes smashing a barrel for healing or ninja guage items or the bomb items, and then an arrow tells me to go forward, and the level is linear. I feel more like I'm playing turtles in time or final fight, just with a different perspective, more enemies, and big ass anime tiddies. Which is great, Senran games are pretty simple and a good game to play after a few beers or bowls of weed or lines of coke or whatever you do to unwind after work. Sometimes even the bare bones strategy components of a musou are more than I want to deal with when my mind is already worn out.

I still ultimately feel like beat em up is more appropriate descriptors, since those other character action 3D games already have their own "genre" term of being called Cuhrayzee, or if you're a journalist "character action games". The other major difference in Musou is the enemy waves don't stop until you beat the boss/mission. Even taking an enemy base does not stop a trickle of enemies from spawning, you will always have to keep an eye out on the field map to see if areas are in trouble. SK, you clear a room, it's clear, unless you are in burst renewal searching for Secret Growth shit or secret files, or Yoma enemies, there's never a reason to go anywhere but the next room the Kunai is pointing you in.

Extella is the only other game that can actually be called a musou clone.

The problem is saying a generic term like "beat em up" could mean literally anything like I listed. You could either be saying the game plays like an Arkham game or you could be saying the game plays like DMC, it's a massive spectrum of games that you have to narrow down somehow and the easiest way is by calling it musou-lite at the very least. Musous are obviously far more hectic and strategic with specific things, but it at least gives you a starting point for what to expect, and regardless of your term of choice you're still going to have to explain things.

Well, the super armor they gave her didn't really help the situation considering if you did any attack she could instantly shrug it off. They also had a lot of the enemies with super armor which made combat in general more annoying. Until you nab some shinobi stones even post-patch it's annoying.

If I bought the Senran Kagura series I would do the following:
1. Reboot the series.
2. Reduce the amount of playable characters to four: Asuka (balanced swordwman), Katsuragi (power close quarters character with grabs and throws), Hibari (summoner a la V / Astral Chain) and Ikaruga (DEX character with low damage but faster speed and agility)
3. Give them distinctive movesets so they don't play even remotely similar to each other. A single linear skill tree where they can learn news attacks and passive buffs.
4. Instead of being a shitty musou or stylish "keep juggling enemies into the air", I would just make the game a simple beat'em up like God Hand, where you're fighting to survive and reach the next level / checkpoint and not to rank stupid letters.
5. The enemies will be female ninjas and female oni with diverse weaponry and moveset. Even the simplest enemy will wreck you up if you aren't careful.
5. World map with semi-linear individual levels a la Nioh
6. The Crimson squad will be non-playable bosses. They won't even be unlockable so they can be designed as legit bosses.

7even was supposed to be the end of the main story, so I expect, or rather want, it to be less about the teams and single characters like the previous batch of games were and istead focus more on the big picture with the yoma and the end of the world, and have the teams actually go and fight together instead of against each other.
There's still some personal stories left in the air like Kat's parents, but that can easily be integrated in a sort of general happy ending.

I definitely agree, but they should still at least tidy everything up. A resolution to Rin x Daidoji x Kiriya would also be nice since they've been doing that forever. It probably will be a teamup game where the girls get paired up with different teams and get to learn about and from one another as they fight the Yoma. One can hope at least.

For as much as I didn't care for Shinovi Master, one of the few interactions I did appreciate was those five during the tournament. Renka jumping in front of an attack heading for Kagura, despite being the round leader, and Naraku appreciating the fact that the sisters still put Kagura's safety in high priority.

Remove more than half the characters and focus on giving what's left fleshed out movesets. PC, Xbone, maybe Switch but not if it's gonna hold the other ones back. It gets boring once you unlock everything tho, the next challenge is to play against other ppl

3DS ones are the best but you need a hacked New 3DS if you want Burst to run at any respectable level. Versus is pretty okay, it does a nice conversion into proper 3D and it was fun to mess around with all the new girls and their movesets. Estival Versus is a mistake, every single gameplay change is for the worse and is a downgrade from SV to appeal to multiplayer balance for absolutely no reason. PBS is a fun spinoff with a couple things keeping it from being really fun (Namely the half health invincibility and insane card grind). I hear Burst Re:newal is a pretty great return to form after EV but I still need to pick it up. Bon Appetit is only good for like three or four songs and some of the story stuff, it's all over the place in terms of song difficulty on hard and it's incredibly repetitive even if you have the DLC.

The Switch games I have no clue on, I recall people saying Reflexions is overpriced and you should only go for it if you really like one of the specific girls while the pinball one isn't worth it at all.

Gameplay is more refined (aerial rave mixups, with time-esque dodge mechanic) but the VN parts are much worse (twice the dialogue for a story that's half as interesting). Worth a look if you're all about dem big tiddy lesbians, just don't be shocked if you find yourself skipping the story.

That's more or less how things are in universe. The existence of yoma is only supposed to be known by elite shinobi, and they leave behind the difference between good and evil shinobi in order to fight them secretly.

To me SK2 felt like it went a bit too grim compared to Burst. Burst was more of a decent balance but it's like SK2 reveled in it. There's nothing wrong with wanting to fight for what's right even if it means doing something wrong (Going against the council to help Kagura), and there's nothing wrong with the whole Yoma subplot of how dangerous and horrible they are. But at the same time it constantly felt like Asuka's entire life was being put down while Homura's more cynical realist outlook kept getting propped up on a pedastal, and then you have Kagura also putting Asuka down at times. It felt like Hanzo and Kiriya were the only ones to stand by her side at all and try to give her proper reality checks or support. It also felt like they were trying to justify all the murders Hebijo commits in cold blood.

Going back to Burst levels would be great, you have the levity but it never really eases up on that serious tone it has even when Hibari pops into Hebijo and she starts befriending everyone. Then at the same time it's not really beating you over the head too much with all the philosophical stuff all the time. Most of the dark stuff is just to set up some backstory and then it simply remains a serious battle between Hanzo and Hebijo who have become closer counterparts even though they're at odds with their professions and put aside differences to save humanity.

Make the game good. It won't attract the normalfags back but it will keep people entertained and playing past the first week. Some of these are actually fun, but it needs to be more than just fun when at max level and curbstomping everything.

Write an actual decent story as well. People who like the characters don't like seeing them sidelines and turned into generic stereotypes for the whole game. At least have the decency to have them as unlockable non-story content if you aren't doing anything with them in the current game.

It's doubtful that they'd stick with Sony after the SK7 situation. Assuming this doesn't kill the series entirely, Switch and Steam are most likely going to be the place any future games get released.

Boss encounters in Burst Renewal on 3-star is the best combat this series has seen to date. Still has some problems but it's definitely not brainless.

I'll admit that I've not played Burst Renewal. Is the combat actually good? The huge problem with most of the games is that Normal is piss easy, while Hard has massive super armor which means that jump-groundsmash is the only attack you can end up doing for the entire fight. And if you play through the game once, then you end up outleveling Hard and turn that into a curbstomp. So the entire game ends up boring, outside just screwing around by bringing a maxed out character and nuking everything in one hit. And that gets old fast.

The only fun times I've really had were SK2 multiplayer, since that was co-op and involved killing some generally tough fights in the Youma Den. Although you literally needed to arrange something with someone in one of these threads to find anybody online.

Renewal is, by and large, a mostly fixed Estival. It doesn't feel nearly as plodding as that game overall, though still a hair less smooth than Shinovi. The big takeaways are that superarmor's pretty much gone aside from large enemies and bosses BUT parries have been buffed to a rather useful state. Boss fights on the highest difficulty become a lot more about reading enemy attacks and breaking their defenses with well timed parries, as it's usually unsafe to just go ham unless you're so overlevelled that you've surely already beaten the stage by now.

Interesting. I might pick up the Steam version in that case, especially if I can find it on sale.
