It looks like the first game but far better because it's faster and transformations are now instant. You have literally no excuse at this point.

Only complaint is how snappy animations go between each other. Classic games had them blend into each other better than this.

why bring it to PAX if it's not in a good enough state to show? People would've understood if we didn't get a demo and maybe got a regular trailer instead, but bringing a very unfinished and boring demo to PAX only harms your game rather than help it.

The real redpill of Shantae is the games were always fucking boring and easy. I always drop them after a few levels because it lacks any proper challenge or interesting gimmicks.

no I'm saying that you shouldn't bring the demo to pax if it's clearly unfinished. demos are supposed to give a hands on impression, and if your impression is "ehhh it's kinda boring" then you're going to be left thinking it's boring, at least until they prove it isn't later(which who knows if they will until launch since they're probably going to use this demo at every event until launch). This is why some companies make special demo versions of the game, which are versions of the game made purely to show off what you're gonna get, rather than plopping the tutorial/first area of the game in a demo and locking you out of progressing past that.

I know what demos are, and I even point out that some companies make special demos for events or the eshop/ps store/steam or pick a different portion of the game instead of the first fucking level so that way they can give you more tools and more freedom to figure out what the game has to offer.

It's literally the same thing as SatPC's first demo, except this actually has a boss fight.

Everything seems to move way too fast though. It's like they took the "dances slow the pace down" complaint and turned it on its head. Also, why isn't Wetgal here when we know she's in the game?

I already like it. I've got my main want (dungeons) back. We'll see how the rest pans out. If every dungeon has their own main gimmick (this one's being easy timed runs) like GBC, I think I'll be just fine with this. It has a chance of becoming my favorite, if it improves over the game. If not, it's decent.

well, the carb dude really was boring in HGH and the plant boss really was boring and even was a plant just to rub it off they took the idea from super metroid and it will be in the final game, so there are two complains that wil probably be in the final game at least

The insta transformations are huge and open up so much platforming, that was the feature I was most excited about and I'm so glad it's delivering.
I agree with some points made though like the lack of enemy feedback BUT it's not nearly enough to make me any less excited since this is going to be just as good if not better than PC.

Shantae relies on girl power fantasy with mostly female enemies, ass wiggling, hip shaking, and monster boobies. (It's not as sexy as it sounds) She'd be forgotten and buried if it wasn't for sex appeal like Metroid.

The slime girls grab you and pull you inside them, and you have to mash buttons to get out.

Yawn, wake me up when Pirate's Curse 2 comes out. Animal gameplay is problematic because the stages aren't clever enough to not be broken by flying transformations or underused things like the Spider.
We need a proper Risky Boots game.

My only defense to this is that it's only the very first dungeon before you get any of these insta-transformations, which look really neat. I kinda have a feeling it will follow a similar style of progression to Hollow Knight or Pirate's curse

The bosses could gain a lot with just a few expressive sounds added in. Like taunts from Risky and maybe little giggles from the plant girl during her attacks (good audio indicator of them too) and sighs or even soft singing/humming while basking in the sunlight. It would give them slightly more character and fights a sense of fun. Right now the silence is deafening.
For a series known partly for its sound design this was pretty lacking. It also does looks a little dull BUT considering its a demo for an unfinished game, and thus probably either the tutorial level or part of an unfinished one (hopefully), I still have hope it'll be enjoyable. There were a few little things in there that seemed like they'ed be fun mechanics if they can utilize them well.

Plus the presence of heart squids might mean we're getting the Squidsmith back, which is just fine in my book

It gets better as you get more abilities. It's a very solid game for what it is, I'd say try to at least get to the Golem Mine before you make the decision to drop it.

Yeah a lot of people seem to not know how metroidvania's work. Pirate's Curse is simple at the start too. The fun comes from collecting gear that gives you new movement and combat options and watching Shantae become an unstoppable sword charging, cannon ball jumping killing machine. Looks like switching quickly between monster fusions you collect will serve the same purpose.

Hgh was pretty easy as shit, I hope this game brings some challenge in it, and I hope they make actual puzzles unlike the mouse mazes in Hgh.
I'm glad transformations are being limited this time, Hgh just had way too many one and done transformations. I also hope they add way more mini-games, or at least something that will make me want to keep playing after i beat the game apart from trying to 100% it. The new renders are cool and the new HUD, while looking a tad bit boring, doesn't look awful. I also hope the story isn't predictable and continues the lore that Pirate's Curse started. I do like how much faster Shantae looks in the game, and instant transformations is going to save so much god damn time. The music being 16 bit isn't that great to me, and i hope it's only for that dungeon. I could care less about the sprites being reused if only they corrected the colors on them so it looked closer to the actual artstyle their using for Seven Sirens. and Risky's sprite still has yellow eyes. lol.

It's not really a Metroidvania, more of a platformer with some light exploration elements.
Really it's moresimilar to Zelda 2 than Metroid, especially the first game with it's several towns.

the problem with shantae is the transformations themselves
most metroidvania games make your upgrades things that change your core moveset so that by the end of the game you can have more fluid platforming and tighter puzzles
shantae's base moveset is pretty much the exact same at the end of the game as it is at the start except she gets animals for puzzles
there's a reason pirate's curse is the best actual game

But the transformation abilities are basically part of her moveset now. You have to use the dash ability in order to transform into Newt.

Every single Shantae game except HGH had combat rooms. That being said only GBC had great ones, because while the monsters might've been the same, the terrain was different, altering the fight. Hopefully since of the wetmen fights has a more confined space, they will do that again.

I bought the last game (1/2 Genie Hero) on switch. Loved the graphics and combat, but the constant running around from level to level to level just seemed annoying and busy work to keep you playing. There were several points where I just didn't know what to do or where to go. Had to sift through a lot of youtube videos to figure out what to do and how to solve puzzles. I absolutely HATE puzzles in platform game.

After I beat the main story and Risky's quest I had no desire to play it every again, even with the bikini costume, which they fucked up by making you grab sunscreen items constantly or you 'burn' and take damgage. Essentially turning the game into speedrun mode.

Fuck that. The only way I'll by this one is if it oozes fan service, and it better be good goddamn fan service, like Shanta, Sky, Risky, and Rotty joining in a all-girl lesbian orgy with strapons, DPs, and ass worship.

It's just cause it's slower and more dungeon oriented. Pirate's Curse made you go FUCK fast, especially once you got the scimitar, and areas were fairly small.

Even the music reflects this, instead of rave-like music, it's much more subdued.

The new Fusion Coin shit seems almost like it's BUILT for her to work in Smash.

One of the biggest issues with the idea of her in Smash is that one of her defining features, the transformations, are so slow to pull off.
But now, conveniently in the newest game they've clearly been working on for a while now, she has instant transformation moves that do a single effect then turn her back to normal. Exaclty the kinda shit they'd give her in Smash as specials.

Like, it's 99.99% just a coincidence, but I still hold the embers of hope in my heart that she'll get in and this shit just seems tailor made for it.

I never liked the new animations and sprites when shantae stopped being pixel art, lost a lot of its charm. It went from rounded and shaded to weirdly angular and snappy with extra tween. I'm also not sure why they keep switching the portrait art/artist, they hit their stride with PC but its been pretty meh since then. At least if kaufmans working on it we have the soundtrack to look forward to

Also, I'm trying not to judge it too harshly based on what is probably the first dungeon. And probably an alpha/demo example of gameplay, rather than a full dungeon design. The first dungeon in the other games were more complex, while this seems incredibly linear. Sure, it loops on itself after the Risky fight, but there's never really any branching path to choose.

The instant transformation is an interesting change. Looks like she can still dance anyways, so no clue what that's used for now. Boomerang seems OP, especially since the cannonball goes away after one hit while they stay on the screen for longer. Cute characters in the game, though.

It could still happen. A lot of these demos will only show the first phase of a boss fight. Not saying that will necessarily be the case, but it's possible she'll have more than just the one phase in the game.

Literally nobody knew or cared about Shantae, not even when Risky's Revenge came out on the DSi.

Shantae only took off when the original game was ported to the 3DS VC and Pirate's Curse came out.

If you wanted to do something fun with Shantae, you could have hair that can launch and bounce off walls for angled shots, use it as a grappling hook to swing, or a helicopter Rayman style, anything.

I'll admit the interconnected world was one of the big draws to me. It was one of the faults I had for Pirate's Curse and one of my disappointments with Half Genie Hero. I mean, good for people who enjoyed that, but I thought I was done with the series if that was the direction they wanted to take. So they implied it, but the first boss having Siren in it's name implies that it'll be the bosses, and the genies will just teach you new transformations like in the first game.

There's only four Shantae games currently out:

>Shantae: Half Genie Hero

I'd recommend just playing them in order. Start with Risky's Revenge if you are against playing a GBC game, though. They're all fairly good and still playable. The main issue is that the games originally started with a big connected world with dungeon diving, and started to become more and more stage-focused with later titles.
