When I first saw the initial trailer on IGN as a twelve-year-old, I thought they were ruining Zelda.
A year or so later I bought a Gamecube because of Metroid Prime and a sale at K-Mart. An episode of Extended Play was the review that made me consider playing Wind Waker.
I finally bought the game alongside Medal of Honor: Frontline at my local Meijer. Minutes into the game I realized it was great and from that moment on I no longer wrote off games for not being 'ultra-realistic'.
It's a great art-style.

I'm assuming the joke is that the pirates don't have shields either so they can't board the boat by that logic, and they're trying to make up for that fact by showing their dodge moves in lieu of defense, like Link and others can do? That last part is just inference but that's all that makes sense to me.

Half the Zeldas are dark as shit, it's just fairy tale dark. Fans want a grim and gritty fantasy epic which is never going to happen, but to say Zelda doesn't work with darkness at all is just untrue. Hell, BotW starts with everybody dying, OoT has the world ruined, and even the original LoZ has barely anybody left.

The joke is that Link bowing to apologize for some unspecified bad thing he did, but the other person doesn't know why he's doing it.
