Why would a thread about the Silent Hill series of VIDEOGAMES not belong on the VIDEOGAME board?

>220x317
A shame, this thread could have been something if you put more effort into the OP picture, for example a 1600x900 picture of Angela getting anal raped

Silent Hill 3 facial animations mog most modern games. It's absolutely over for modern games

Game on Playstation 2 or Xbox console = good.
Patched PC version = good.
Emulated PS2 = no.
HD Collection = bruh...

Are the emulated versions of the PS2 games good if I use software mode?

>The catalogue is fucking awful, let's have a nice SH thread
what is /vg/

/vg/ is the videogame general board, why do you ask user

>Are the emulated versions of the PS2 games good if I use software mode?
yep. I like playing SH games either on original hardware or as close to the original thing as possible.

That's good news, time to play the series

>why do you ask user
why don't you have a SH thread there then ?

2 was my personal favorite but 3 and 1 are up there too, with 4 bringing up the rear. Shattered Memories was also good and Origins wasn't bad. Everything other than those ranges between fairly shit and utter shit, with Book of Memories topping the shit cake. What happened to PT was a tragedy and it will never not hurt to think about.

is it worth giving 4 another shot? i love the concept but found the gameplay lind of dull.

4 had its moments for sure. I didn't like the way Henry handled and the new focus on combat, but it has some great story building and freaky shit to experience and see. Second half is an escort mission so that was a bit annoying, but the whole experience is worth it imo. Some of the coolest ideas in that game.

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON'T use W10's own virtual disc app! Don't install under C:\Program Files\ !
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.

All the info & links you'll ever need:
pastebin.com/6B3qZs4S

Follow the SH2 widescreen fix site's instructions to the teeth, and you should be fine.
For 3 & 4, check the "Widescreen Fixes".

ePSXe with Pete's OpenGL 1.77 @ 480p works great for SH1.
Try the PGXP emulator for a lot less wobbly graphics.

>Protips:
Play the games in release order, and don't play on Easy mode.
Multiple playthroughs per game is very recommended.
Lower the in-game Brightness, crank up volume.
Turning OFF flashlight helps a ton!

For an industry that seems to be focusing more on graphics than gameplay recently, it's really sad that most devs can't even aesthetically surpass a game that came out in 2003.

Unpopular opinion here.

The only 2 western titles that are truly bad are Homecoming and BoM.
SM is a weird experience but still a good game. Origins is not a good game. Ok. But it is not as shit as everybody say here. It's just mediocre, and it's the last Silent Hillish SH game released. DP had some interesting stuff but flopped in some aspects.

So play the PC versions, which are original PC ports. Problem solved.

Thats not an unpopular opinion, you just forgot that godawful Silent Hill Diablo on psvita.

That's literally exactly what said and he didn't forget BoM either.

People bring that point up a lot when talking about VtMB too. More modern games just do face scanning + mocap, so it's technically more realistic, but VtMB was designed to have face animations purposely exaggerated just because it's more enjoyable. I think a lot of devs don't understand that now.

what's you're favorite piece of hidden lore?

You forgot the affinity fix on SH2. SH2 PC port hates multicores, so you have to set its affinity so that it only uses one. Otherwise the game might glitch out and crash all the time.

What about that comparison chart I saw that showed a lot of SH PC ports have issues? Isn't it better just to emulate the originals?

>Isn't it better just to emulate the originals?
If emulation didn't sometimes come with its own set of issues, yes. It's not uncommon for a game to be playable in emulation but still have graphical glitches or something.

I don't know about "hidden lore" but I love the room in the Forest World in SH4 with the legs with boots on them hanging from the ceiling. You can only angle the camera so far up but it's like a guy with creepily long legs is just hanging from the ceiling with the rest of him out of view. Creeps me out.

2 has an easy fix issue, SH3 has an input lag when accessing menus (kinda like in Origins) but thats about it. SH3 in particular was a very good port at the time and is arguably the best version. SH4 port however is full of issues and you need multiple fixes to make it run well enough.

How animations were made back in PS2 era?

They used motion cap in SH3.

>finally decide to play 4 again due to all the good memories
>it really is clunky, with botched animations and other issues
man I shouldnt have done this. I've replayed 2 countless times but only played 4 once on Ps2 back in the day and still have fond memories.
But now I realize why people say it isn't as good.

But it still has amazing music and some of my favorite tracks. Yamaoka was a genius in those days

I haven't played 4 because I felt like 3 already had a lot of problems and I've only heard 4 gets worse.

>you just forgot that godawful Silent Hill Diablo on psvita
I counted it, BoM

Would you be interested in a Fox Engine remake of Silent Hill if it were given to creatives that cared?

I don't understand what stops current developers from doing animations on the same level as Silent Hill 3 or Shadow of the Colossus. They have much more powerful consoles and PCs to work with. Money also doesn't seem to be an issue since the budget for the games has been multiplied at least 10 times compared to 6th gen.

It really is beyond impressive, I went back recently and the rigging is quite modern, they used some alpha textures around characters' eyebrows and cheeks to make wrinkles appear when they speak and look around, we barely even saw that during the 7th gen of consoles.

>remake
no, just get the original games working in virtual reality

I can't even make it 10 minutes in PT VR

SH4 was is and will always be my favorite, anything past 4 except origins is shit tier and should be renamed

>3 to 4 hours to render 1 second of sub-480p FMV
Man, the old masters of vidya development deserve way more praise.

Origins is one of THE biggest pieces of shit tho'

compared to what? bare in mind i said past SH4. what game after 4 is better than origins and in what sense because if you like action for example i can see why you would like homecoming better

Attached: 1998 (3).jpg (1235x1690, 565K)

>compared to what?
Compared to most things AFTER 4.
Only Downpoor and BoM are truly worse than 0.

>if you like action for example i can see why you would like homecoming better
I don't, but I prefer HC, no matter how shit it is, because it at least does not tamper with the OG trilogy's canonical story, looks decent, sounds pretty gud, and plays alright.

i guess we have to agree to disagree then.

I guess you just don't really care of the backstory and characters of SH1 and above.

Yeah, 4 has some interesting ideas but pretty botched execution. At least it has this song though but in context, it's really wasted.
youtube.com/watch?v=NdXCsXcs6nA

>lets have a nice SH thread
Boiler Theory autists are coming and you know it.

but i do although nearly not as much as those from sh2 and 4

why? series is dead, let it go already.

>there are no new games so we are not allowed to talk about it
>well, time to post some frogs

Attached: 1565464179358.jpg (1600x1066, 313K)

>well, time to post some frogs
Stop projecting.

Anyway, there is nothing to say about SH series at this point.

>At least it has this song though but in context, it's really wasted.
youtube.com/watch?v=PTx4dQXN400
I felt the same way about this song in SH3 too. You only hear like 5-10 seconds of it during a short cutscene, but it's probably my favorite track.

Yes user. I'm sure every individual has discussed everything about the series.

a lot of old games have been getting more attention lately with remakes and being ported to virtual reality.

you took the kojima pill way too hard faggot

>MOMMY I'M TRYING TO MAKE COMPLETE STRANGERS THINK THE WAY I THINK!!! I'M NOT COOL MOMMY??!!1!!ONE!!!

wow, all those interesting discussions about SH series.

i'm really interested in playing the original games in virtual reality. do you have any favorites that you'd like to play in VR? i always thought VR was retarded until i realized i could play old favorites in it some day.

How does it feel like to live in the year 2008?
Every single major fan-fix for SH2 has incorporated an automated affinity fix for a decade now.

>What about that comparison chart I saw that showed a lot of SH PC ports have issues?
enhanced.townofsilenthill.com/SH2/compare.htm

>Isn't it better just to emulate the originals?
NO.
PCSX2 is still a piece of shit, that also demands WAY MORE from your PC than the PS2 emulator.

All of the SH games used motion capture.
However, the facial animations were mostly hand-crafted.

Except SH1 obviously.

What is your favorite area and why it is Historical Society?

Attached: images[1].jpg (259x194, 12K)

wrong

>PCSX2 is still a piece of shit
I'm hoping the 1.6 release will fix a lot of issues. The devs themselves have said they know it's becoming a problem and have started to put new features on hold just to get the new version out, so maybe it'll come soon.

For me it's Nowhere. It just feels like the perfect culmination of everything that previously happens in the game.

>Don't play on easy mode
I'm gonna choose it regardless if it's my first time playing the game.
I'm not gonna pick the hardest difficulty for my first time and then drop the game because on how unfair it is.

>So play the PC versions
not faithful enough. there is always a guy in these threads that shills hard for the PC version.
the emulator is the most accurate and hustle free experience and works even on ancient builds.

Wrong.
School. Nuff said.

The game doesn't just have easy and hard settings, there's a normal setting. The game isn't really that challenging on normal anyway, just that playing on easy probably removes the threat from enemies completely which negatively affects the atmosphere.

>the emulator is the most accurate and hustle free experience and works even on ancient builds.
Absolute and utter bullshit.
You can run the PC ports on literal Windows XP era devices. Meanwhile, with PS2 emulation you won't get even stable 30fps at 480p on anything not made in the 2010s, and is not at least mid-tier gaming rig.

Not to mention setting up and configuring the PCSX2 is waaay more pain in the arse than downloading & installing the PC ports.

Attached: do you have a single fact.png (207x239, 19K)

Motion capture was already used extensively at the time. Goldeneye 007 was one of the first major titles to make good use of it. You can see when mocap is used.

Have you seen Harry's running animation? Hell, pretty much every animation in SH1 look terrible. I refuse to believe it was motion captured.

>have you seen Harry's running animation?
For roughly 20 years, yes.
Mocap is not a free-pass to superb animation.
Nor do you need all the animation to be mocapped. Most of the FMV stuff certainly is though.

They don't care or it isn't worth it to them. The animation system in Shadow of the Colossus was such a labor of love and effort to make them look realistic and show there is actual weight to the movements, but the average consumer looks at it and says "Why is Wander so floppy? He runs like a girl."

They focus on what will sell copies instead.

the hotel in 2 and the haunted mansion in 3.
