i'm the opposite. only handhelds that i liked were psp and ds.
mostly because psp was sort of revolutionary at the time as multimedia device. and the homebrew scene was awesome for it.
and ds had gameplay that you couldn't get on consoles.

Sony, Sega, even Atari made objectively better hardware. It's just that they didn't get the good games & services on their with the Nintendo fairy dust. The DS, Wii, and SNES were the only times Nintendo nailed hardware design. But the Switch Lite proves they learned their lesson. Again.

Nintendo DS was probably the last time I really loved video games. Rhythm Heaven, Etrian Odyssey, Hotel Dusk, Radiant Historia, Elite Beat Agents, SMT Strange Journey, TWEWY, Castlevania, Ace Attorney, Layton, Picross. God damn that system had a great library.

I'm quite fond of handhelds as well. There's something about them that just clicks for me. Even had a GBA custom made using the gold Zelda shell but with backlit SP innards just so I can play all the Nintendo games perfectly.

I played the demo and enjoyed it, it's only real problem is that it's on the PSP so it kind of has awkward aiming and moving. If you can get it super cheap might as well.

Color is a thing most people actually like. Nauseating 3D that rarely adds to gameplay is clearly a gimmick. SP was great for its time. But not superior. And again, IDK what your idea of a good game is, but you could get a New 2DS XL right now and play beloved acclaimed titles from DS thru New-only and virtual console stuff for the next 5 years and still not finish the library of top tier games. Really depends what you do with it. I primarily use the handheld mode at home anyway, when the wife or kids want to use the TV for something else, or in my home office while waiting for something long to run during work, so it seems perfect for me.
