don't bother recruiting just focus on what you have and then plan out in your ng+. your second run you can recruit every recruit able student before the second half begins.

Margrave Edmund only adopts her because she has a crest. Her crest however belonged to Maurice of the 12 heroes who became a demonic beast. It's a legend that all his decendants are cursed to turn into beasts and so Marianne is treated as a cursed child from childhood and blamed for everything that goes wrong including her dead parents. She's sucidally depressed and her prayers to the Goddess are actually for her death. If she's not in your class she actually does suicide in the time skip, otherwise you give her a reason to live and she wants to change on account of you, hence her radically different part 2 characterization. Eventually you confront Maurice in her prologue dispelling the legend of the beast curse and she starts acknowledging her crest.

It's both don't recruit anyone because it's cooler, but at the same same recruit everyone for their dialogue and if you actually train Byleth because you won't have 10 teachers of the same thing even if you did. At best look at a list of paralogues and make sure you have anyone who shares one after timeskip

I ended up recruiting nearly everyone on my 1st run which was BL and I actually wasn't going to use her. Ended up benching Ashe because her personal skill and crest just made her straight up better while Ashe does not have one. I wanted to keep him around for Locktouch then I realized how redundant it was because the game gives you so much gold and you can freely buy door/chest keys so having them around is never an issue.

This plus BE already has the least recruitable characters and paralogues. Locking more even for storyline purpose would have seriously gimped that route.

True but literally everyone in that route, even random npcs, in the ch12 camp say they made a snap decision and are uncertain if they made the right choice. For everyone that you recruit its because byleth is a deciding factor since hes canonically portrayed as being super invested and helpful towards his students. Its a matter of more time spent with this trustworthy individual recently vs less time spent with people you were formerly close to less recently

Considering how she was cheering punished Dimitri and how disappointed she got when he went back to normal... Mercedes is sketchier than she seems.
