Of Samus? She's a pretty straightforward hero type with the (originally) unexpected surprise of her being a chick. Nowadays it's more just that she has the contrast of Varia vs Zero that makes her mysterious and appealing, coupled with the minor humanizing elements we see of her.
Of Metroid as a whole? Strong atmosphere, tight gameplay with fun bosses and exploration where it's very satisfying to find new items and get more powerful to explore further.
