Of Samus? She's a pretty straightforward hero type with the (originally) unexpected surprise of her being a chick. Nowadays it's more just that she has the contrast of Varia vs Zero that makes her mysterious and appealing, coupled with the minor humanizing elements we see of her.

Dark, heavy atmosphere, tight controls and fun bosses as well as an interesting progression of abilities that makes you feel super powerful by the end.
Samus is an interesting in how extremely minimal her characterization is too. She's not complex, she's quite simple - just a hero who has dealt with some serious shit. But that's what makes things like her wave at the end of Prime 2 or the image of her sat in a shop in Zero Mission so cool.
