late reply but, imo the anime is fine as from 2 things, the art quality is nowhere up to snuff compared to Ito's actually artwork that and I don't know how to quite describe it but it's like the pacing i guess? like reading the manga gives me an on pins on and nettles a feeling makes me feel on edge, while that feel anxious feeling just isn't there in the anime even though i was watching it at night, alone in my house by myself

Ito's pacing relies heavily on the turning of pages to really get that image plastered in your mind and it gives you time to linger over every minute detail. It's kind of hard to achieve with animation as budgets are a thing and animation cost money lots of it.

The Junji Ito collection is a fucking slideshow that somehow manages to have no budget for the animation and no budget for the art. They also shoved in all those weirdo kid stories instead of SOMETHING ACTUALLY SCARY.
Go read the manga, the anime is basically an audiobook.

A group of kids form an after school club where they want to build a robot but then kid hitler comes and uses it to rule the world. the deaths are pretty gruesome.

Gengaku Picasso by Usaumaru Furuya
This story is about a boy who gets the ability to go into paintings to try and help out people in the real world. It references current society issues and has quite a bit of depth into it.

Give these few stories a read. I really like Furuya because damn some of his stories hits me inside. Shintaro Kago is more for "WHAT A FUCKING MADMAN".
