He is the whole reason you win the war.

Lorenz rallying Archbishop Byleth to his father allows Claude to get his almyran troops ready for the assault at the Capital.

After Claude fucks of he is the reason the alliance thrives.

He's one of those characters, where they are boring and one-note in any of the main story missions, but are top tier in their supports.

I think the main difference between the two is that his personal skill makes him better. Have him side by side with a girl, and he takes 3 less damage and deals 3 more.

You get enough renown points and tools to easily recruit everyone who is possible to recruit. Considering you picture, just don't go Edelgards route, since Hilda is recruitable only during the last month before the timeskip in BE's route and that's only after you decide to side with the church.

I did that. He ended up being slow as balls. He has one of the highest speed growths in the game and Mortal Savant fucking ruined it.

Listen I like Sasuke doing Kamehameha crits but it's only good in the last map, if you do it early you get cucked.

The only good sword focused savant is Ignatz because the fucker has 50 speed and Dex growths, after assasin he doesn't feel the burden of an early savant.

The movement combat arts have two real applications:
>have person A gambit a faggot, then have person B move them (either enemy or person A) out of range
>Move your own units for a poor man's +1/2 Mv

The first option is niche since you'll only really use it if you can't kill the target with person A and you NEED person B to not tank a hit, but the second option comes up a lot. I would never stick in a beginner class to learn them, but if you pick one up they're ok combat arms. Assuming you don't need that combat art slot to hit a unit for effective damage or guarantee a 100% hit or whatever, of course.

He would be my favorite if I could dick him. In fact, many of the boys would be improved if dicking them was an option.

They are in other games but here there are Battalion Gambits, Canto, and other Combat arts that allow me to move/protect vulnerable units while acting to achieve the same effect or better, and as I said if I've really managed to fuck up I can just Pulse.

Dark Knight Lorenz is godly. Everyone memes giving his relic to Lysithea but she already can kill 95% of shit in one hit anyway. On my GD run my black mage Lorenz was so good I had to sometimes hold him back since I didn't want him to be the only one getting experience. His spell list is fantastic and his equal stats actually work out quite well as he still hits hard thanks to his great spells while being tankier then most other mages.

Alright having beat all 4 routes, and rewatching key cutscenes. I've come to these conclusions regarding 3H's overall narrative. (1/2)

Thing is there's the other +range relic you can get, giving him that one and Lysithea his means you have some absurd coverage on your spell range and she doesn't have to suffer from hanging back or not moving as quickly as the rest of the army.

I was preying to god that Yea Forums would finally be right for once and Claude was going to be a slippery snake Delita type. Then the game hyped him up as one in the earliest cutscenes. I spent the whole playthrough bracing myself for him to pull the curtain back and reveal a backstabbing ruse cruise that never came.

Imagine how much more interesting the narrative would've been if they had gone in that direction. Edelgard is already a tyrant ran by noble families headed entirely by stereotypical evil hand-wringing chancellors. Faerghus' frequent peasant rebellions, famines, ethnic genocide and unstable ruler make it a risky bet for the future of Fodlan. Making Claude a fucking dickhead would've made things REALLY engaging, but they downplayed Faerghus' weakpoints and made Claude an untouchable golden god whose biggest fault is being just a little too naive.

Battle means more level grinding. Unless you're looking to powerlevel Byleth's skills through Faculty Training, grind fishing on multi-catch days for professor exp, refresh motivations, or grind support ranks with units outside of house, you lose very little for picking Battle. Even skills will level at a fairly comparable clip if you're trying to level skills while in a class that specializes in them, and supports can be grinded by dragging an out-of-house student into battle with you. The biggest disadvantage is how long it takes to grind full battles out.

Never pick Rest or Seminar. They're dogshit.

A lot of Edelgard’s development takes place offscreen desu. And oddly enough the best glimpses we see of it aren’t even in her own route mostly. Her route is really just seeing her ambition through to the end

He also used the Snape persona to test people's worth and is a very reliable ally to those that pass his test.

Brigand like everyone else for Death Blow. A lot of people make him an assassin, but I keep him as a Sniper/Bow Knight for the bow range and Ward Arrow/Break Shot/Seal Strength utility. -6 Strength and Defense from a single attack is super useful. If he had Deadeye on top of all that he'd be the best archer in the game.

He's also the second best rally bot in the game, thanks to his rally spread being Speed/Dex/Strength. If he got Rally Strength earlier than fucking S rank in Authority he'd be a lot more useful in that regard, but he can push Raph/Hilda/Lorenz over the doubling breakpoint when you really need it thanks to getting Rally Speed so early.

I don't really get the appeal of Assassin Ignatz. His Dex and Speed growths and bases are good, but not anything to write home about. Do people just not know what to do with him and stick him there?

Assasin comes at a point in the game where brigand skill is all he needs to chip and kill but he is still squishy.

Making his dexterity go higher only makes his transition into Wyvern Lord/Bow knight even better, Ignatz is also one of the characters that gets to proc lethality a lot so it is appealing to get the mastery for some.

The teachers make sense since Manuela came from the empire and Hanneman's main motivation for his crest research is to fuck the nobility system.

Shamir's just being a texbook mercenary which is a rare thing in FE overall

Yes. Instructing seems to best be used powerleveling a unit's Flying/Heavy Armour/Riding based on what class they want to make their end goal. It's also the only effective way of raising Authority for better battalions.

I personally focus prioritize instructing like so:
>All physical/magic units get Axe/Reason respectively
>One dude focuses lance for Knightkneeler to fuck the Death Knight
>Everyone else goes authority on the side to get early gambits
>Go into Brigand or Mage for their mastery skill

>Focus on primary weapon skill with Sword/Faith/Heavy Armour as secondary
>Switch to Thief/Armour Knight/Priest to shore up a unit's speed/defense/resistance if they're getting that particular stat fucked too hard
>Immediately switch them back to whatever class I'm actually interested in
>Whoever doesn't need to do this gets Flying/Riding as their permanent second focus for the rest of the playthrough

Ingrid's a flier by default but is just as good at being a cavalier, has a green-white colour scheme to her counterpart's red-black, and has a speed oriented growth compared to Sylvain's strength. Probably the closest thing to a Christmas duo.

It makes Rhea look even more crazy, because she thought Sothis would look down on humanity like she does and would hijack someone with no problem. Shes spent so much time and effort to bring back someone she didn't even really know, it seems like.

For example, Ferdinand's life goal and ancestral role for centuries has always been to serve as prime minister and advisor to the emperor. Edelgarde goes through all the proper channels and is officially crowned Empress, him fucking off doesn't make a whole lot of sense especially with how crimson flower plays out.

Petra is a hostage from Brigid, she's eager to work with Empress Edelgarde because being a trusted ally of the adrestian monarch elevates her tiny country's status, nevermind that running away would breach the terms of her being a ward of the empire and bring consequences to Brigid

If you mean spellbook sure, but you're only using that in a Dark Knight capacity which Ferdinand obviously would never build into and is Sylvain's obvious special niche on an otherwise mage-light team. On physical classes (Wyvern Lord for being generically strong or Paladin for lancefaire, although that only gives you like +2 effective damage since Wyvern Lord has superior bonus Str) Ferdinand is no worse than Sylvain, unless you for whatever reason really value Lightning Strike as a side option off a Killer Axe (incredibly situational), and I'd argue actually marginally better due to a superior personal skill.

Monster Piercer and Spike are a lot better than Shatter Smash and Focused Strike. Sylvain's a ridiculously good unit for his availability and PRF alone, but otherwise he just has an extremely strong sniping kit.
Sylvain's PRF is much better than Ferdinand's for efficiency play. Avoid tanking is always iffy to plan around, but the real advantage is just that you can set Sylvain up for a fuckton of precision strategies with the extra attack and the damage options on his kit. He's practically impossible to fuck up on too because you can control his bases off of BL and can just go mage if he's STR screwed, gambits if he's STR and MAG screwed, and burn through his PRF then bench if he's STR, MAG and CHA screwed.

Sylvain can only possibly become better as routing is figured out.

Honestly Monster Piercer and Spike are borderline useless, just as Shatter Smash and Focused Strike are. Avoid tanking really isn't iffy in this game; it's extremely easy to build at least 1 or 2 unhittable characters even on Hard, and Ferdinand gets to that point earlier than really anyone else. That may chance on Lunatic, of course.

Sylvain is far more flexible than Ferdinand, I'll grant that. He's a surprisingly competent mage, has more builds open to him, and is very hard to fuck up, even for a casual player. If we're talking reliability and low-level/low LTC, sure, Sylvain may be marginally superior. But Ferdinand is at least Sylvain's equal in the context of a standard non-RNG fucked endgame physical class. And personality/design-wise he's the superior character, at least post-TS in my opinion. That's the point I'm trying to make, is all.

the one thing that really made me like using ferdinand more is seal speed, sometimes i would just throw him somewhere with a broken weapon so he can smack someone to debuff them, then use it to feed whoever is lagging behind. rally dex helped a lot too because i would rally bernie and just have her max distance deadeye enemies

The only good skills are the relic skills, deadeye, and Hunter's Volley. Everything else just feels underwhelming.

It's fine for people to use any unit they want and Ferdinand's still a competent and strong unit because he's a natural cavalier, but it's just disingenuous to compare him favorably to Sylvain. It's impossible for Sylvain to be anything but top tier in LTC due to the nature of his kit, being able to play 3 STR/DEF up and then adjust for one shots with his combat arts is massive before considering the real reason that he's completely busted which is just his availability and PRF would carry him at 0 growths alone traditionally.

Again I don't mean to be such an autistic megasperg, but when the topic is how good units are, it should really be broken down into clear terms. Ferdinand has nothing over Sylvain in the interest of efficiency, he's just saved by the fact that you're going to be using both no questions on either BE route.

The skills are generally scaled fine, it'd be bad design if you wanted to spam them every attack. The listed ones are too strong if anything.
For the most part the fact that using a skill might mean killing before a counter attack is enough reason to keep them in mind.

i think it's just a consequence of the series always having units, i honestly think there is no bad unit in this game (even cyril has uses/worth depending on how you are at the moment), and even if you end up not using the meta team available, youll probably be able to do fine. unlike in the earlier FE games, where people would flip their shit over x unit being worse than y, it's a lot closer in three houses imo and it's one of my favorite things about this installment. hoping this stays true when the difficulty dlc drops
