Genreally don't care if the protag is male or female. i prefer if the game had an option to play as both. adds replayability if the dialogue is a bit different depending on who you play as.
love interest tend to be shit especially if there are other characters that are better in every way than the character the protag is in love with then i'll feel cheated. i played a porn game where the canon love interest is a lame fiesty dork whilst the guy i actually wanted FeMC to be paired with was cooler in every way including his design.
