Smash DLC is all PAID. You have to PAY to get them. They want characters that people would be willing to PAY for. And those guest characters are usually characters that people would be willing to PAY for.

Let's be real for a second. Most first party characters that get requested are d-listers at best. Maybe they could survive as an on-disc fighter, but not separately paid for.

According to the developers themselves, the number of people who buy DLC is way less than the people who bought the base game, and that number drops the farther you go into the games lifecycle. Of course they would choose major games like Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest over obscure titles like Golden Sun.

i see two things wrong with that idea, samurai has never shown to actually care about representing the actual series (only fucking sword fighters no other weapon types then robin's half-magic, zero villains other than maybe robin again on a technicality) and tiki is arguably a more popular dragon from the series even if its for the same reason warioware's ashley is popular

You need to represent every facet of a series. Otherwise FE would have mounts, spears and axes. Mario would have an RPG character. Pokémon would have a character for every gen. Zelda would have a non-triforce character. Pikmin would have fauna playable.

But Corrin and Bayonetta weren't DLC, unless you're counting Smash 4 but in that case, you're forgetting Mewtwo, Lucas, and Roy. Also, pretty sure Bayonetta is owned by Nintendo now and already was by the time she was added to Smash 4.

You either need to be a promotion, so Nintendo can rake in cash for a separate project, or a character that will bring in even more players. So really the only first party characters who could get in are from Astral Chain, Three Houses, Luigi's Mansion 3, Sword and Shield, and New Horizons.

It's obviously characters who were introduced as DLC.

Retro have literally never made a bad game. I trust them wholeheartedly.

I know there were some reports from there that people were having a hard time, but honestly it just sounded like they played things fast and loose. That's substantiated by that one poster way back who talked about his time working on Prime. I guess that workplace environment caught up with them and they couldn't churn out a new game for a while because of how messy things could get. I don't think that means the talent is gone though, since Nintendo was impressed with their Prime 4 proof of concept. The workplace culture that made their games great is still there.

Why are people so against this anyway? It's already shifting in that direction. The only argument I have ever seen against it is "I don't want MK threads to turn into rosterfagging" but that's not even a good argument because A. it already happens plenty and B. it really can't get worse because characters in MK don't specifically matter. Characters in Smash are distinct from one another because of their moveset but MK doesn't have that. Characters in MK are only as distinct as their weight class, making them little more than a skin.

Meanwhile, there is an advantage to it in that it brings in more potential item variety, which again, can't even really be rosterfag'd because nobody can argue that X character deserves a slot because they bring the best potential items. It also brings in more variety of track aesthetics and, again, not much to rosterfag about there because it technically doesn't matter. To me, a switch to expand into all of Nintendo makes sense because the series is getting stale by just sticking to Mario and the same old items they've always had with only 1 or 2 new ones each game.

Third parties are more interesting than the D-List side characters that are left from Nintendo. Every Nintendo All-Star is already in the game besides maybe the Astral Chain protagonist, who literally just debuted anyway.

Corrin should have been the FE newcomer in Ultimate. Lucina, Chrom, Dark Pit and Dark Samus would have been fine as costume alts how they did with Hero.
I guess you could say the same for Pichu, Doc, Y/TLink as well.
