I'm a gigantic GR fan and Japan Studio has made much more unique things than GR. GR is fundamentally a very straight forward open world superhero game in design. A fucking great one, I love it to bits, but don't act like it's a "unique project" compared to some of the ACTUALLY wacky shit Japan Studio has done like Tokyo Jungle or No Heroes Allowed VR. Also, they made Astro Bot too, one of Sony's most critically acclaimed games in the past two years.

I fucking LOVE GR, 2 is my favourite game of all time. But structurally it's an open world mission-based superhero game with a focus on mobility and doesn't stray too far from that concept in its game design. That's not a bad thing, and I'm not saying GR is bad. I just think it's dumb you would say "Japan Studio is not doing unique things anymore" with GR2 as an example of unique, especially when they released Astro Bot just last year.

I'll give you GR1 was certainly unique at the time for being that kind of game on a dedicated handheld though. And the setting is unique, but that's not everything that defines a game.

Also Freedom Wars, while again something I personally enjoyed immensely, is even more formulaic and was Sony's very blatant attempt at a Monster Hunter-like. Both these games are GREAT, especially GR IMO. But Japan Studio has done far more "unique" games than GR or FW.

Sure dude but it's not a contest about how unique they are. They still stand out and offer exclusive gameplay features and a world we'll probably never see elsewhere. Greatest crime they've done is not giving FW a sequel it deserved after leaving it with such a lackluster cliffhanger. The monster variety is low but the abductors are cool as hell and the vine latch hunting was a blast. This goes for soul sacrifice too, even if it was yet another hunting game. The story telling and spells made it stand out now and forever to me

Sony only owns the movie rights and Disney has full control over Spiderman in all other media. I dont believe theres any official confirmation of it anywhere but I’m pretty certain that Spiderman PS4 probably came about as part of the backroom dealing Sony and Disney had that let Disney have Spiderman for the MCU.

There’s literally no reason for them to even make an attempt for the rest of this generation. They’ve had quarters where they released more notable exclusives than the Xbox one has had in its whole lifecycle. Most of them have been shit pseudogames on rails, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Xbox hasn’t had games this whole generation. Microsoft is really more responsible for getting those games canceled than Sony.
