Because turn based combat totally destroys any interest I have in exploring a game's world, or hearing it's story.
Turn based combat is objectively shit, and I'm tired of these Boomer faggots with nostalgia goggles superglued over their eyes claiming otherwise.
Ever notice how story heavy games have turn based combat 99.9% of the time, and vice versa? That's because in those games the story is the priority. Gameplay is an afterthought.
Sure, we COULD have a really cool boss fight here, but it would be so much easier to just TELL the player that they're in a really cool boss fight, and let them use their imagination:
"Wow user, pressing the A Button just dealt 600 damage to that enemy! Can't you imagine how awesome that could have looked and felt if we spent more then 30 minutes programming this gay, combat system?!"
Here's the deal.
If you're some faggot who just pretends to like videogames, when all you really care about is hearing your gay japanese fairy tails, that's fine, but you have to own that.
Don't pretend you're into Dragon Quest for the gameplay.
Don't tell me that imagining a fight as you and the enemy take turns pressing the attack button is as fun or more fun than just fighing the enemy in real time, and getting instant feedback.
Essentially, you bought this game to watch cutscenes and read dialogue. It's a $60 movie with a hundred hours of filler. That's the reality of the situation.
As for why Japanese guys like this shit so much, idk. Maybe they just have a larger population of pussies who care more about story than action. Who knows?
Bottom line here is turn based combat is shit.
You will never refute this.
Me like gun pew pew shoot and brain is gone only fps fun lel.
Yea, sure? Ok? I like Japanese fairy tales.
I also like exploring JRPG worlds.
Why are you such a fucking turd?
>Because turn based combat totally destroys any interest I have in exploring a game's world, or hearing it's story.

Based as fuck.
>JRPGs
>RPGs
>Don't tell me that imagining a fight as you and the enemy take turns pressing the attack button is as fun or more fun than just fighing the enemy in real time, and getting instant feedback.
Why shouldn't I tell you that? It is more fun. Maybe when we have full dive VR, it could be less fun. But the level we're at now? Turn based is far better than any action shit out there now.
I'm not about to read all that lol
Don't waste your time. It's a weird rant by someone annoyed that some other people actually like videogames as opposed to just yelling on Yea Forums.
Good call, I shouldn't have
Dragonquest was genre defining in its day, now it is generic instead. Its also has ugly and stupid creature design and goofy everything else. Japan loves it because its Dragonquest, the rest of the world just don't care.
>reddit spacing
Don't you have any shame?
The only JRPG I liked was Mother 3. Specifically three, one and two aren't as fun/well written to me. Mother 3's story saved it from being garbage, because without it the game would be actual torture to play. So to answer your question: No. JRPGs are inherently trash and deserve to be as niche as they are. Only someone too stupid to manage a real game with real fighting would enjoy fighting the same nonmoving sprites for hours by spamming A until it stops making big numbers.
I'm being a turd, because turn based combat games are a waste of developer resources that could otherwise be used making actual fun games.
I don't mind a good story honestly, but gameplay should always be the main focus, and because of this genre there are so many games that just make it an afterthought.
JRPGs are the scourge of the game industry.
If you don't care about gameplay, why are you designing games? Go make a movie.
why do you make this thread every day you fucking faggot
Dragon Quest has always been a niche game in the west due to being Japan-only for a long time
I, too, am retarded.
>that spacing
Ewwww leave faggots
I've never made this thread b4.
Someone did just ask the same question with this picture inside a different thread, but I thought his question deserved a thread of its own.
too slow and grindy
I enjoyed FF7 a lot when I played it since there wasn't a lot of downtime between attacks and the ATB system gave you enough time to plan out attacks without sacrificing the pace of a battle but I don't know any JRPGs that play similarly
>jrpgfag
>retarded
no shit
Dragon Quest is shit.
JRPGs require a significant time investment, a lot of which is rewarding for people who like to be really really really good at one single thing and dont mind spending hours grinding slow loading random encounters to get there. Lets be honest, it was best described in the past as "Excel spreadsheets on LSD".
Japan is a culture where this singular focus and dedication mentality fits. The idea of overcoming tedium of the grind to rise above the rest is a major theme in their society. To overcome through perserverence and depth towards a singular goal.
Western RPGs like Morrowind or World of Warcraft classic are quickplaying, get adrenaline pumping at times, put the soul of the game in exploration and can actually be played alongside several other games, hobbies or job/family/social life. Its more like playing pretend as children, or a simulation that mimics the experience rather than the balance of numbers.
You will also find many more people who play 3+ different games to a decent level of skill, and probably play many hype games or games that are big in esports. I know plenty who play LoL, TF2, StarCraft2 mainly and play lots of other stuff on the side.
You're lying to yourself. Waiting for your turn to attack 5 times so you can beat the enemy, and start exploring again untill you run into another one is not fun.
Any form of real time combat is more fun than that.
Jumping on a goomba is more fun than that.
90% of the people even interested in DQ are Switch owners
They do, Americans literally like Japanese games just as much as Nips do. They simply hate Dragon Quest because it's boring garbage
Holy shit tl;dr nobody cares you have ADHD son
I'm playing DQ9 right now and it's kind of boring. So that might be why it doesn't sell outside of nipland that well.
because the gameplay in 99% of turnbased jrpgs is mindless, boring garbage. A lot of games are mindless, but at least they slap on tricks to entertain you as a player. One of the main reasons why persona is so critically acclaimed is because it throws a shitload of style at you even if it's close to the standard turn based jrpg. It also doubles as a waifu simulator
Dragon Quest is the plain vanilla of jrpgs not say it's bad but pretty much anything else is more interesting.
Why exactly do people circlejerk FF7 so much when FF9 is better in every concievable way?
FPS subhumans like the ones posting in this thread have ADHD, and the west is exclusively made of FPS subhumans.
I love turned based RPG games, I just don't give a fuck about Dragon Quest.
The art style is so fucking lifeless and boring, I have no idea how anybody enjoys watching Goku and friends fight blue Hershey's Kisses.

As someone who pirated it. I did enjoyed my time with it, the last side quest I played was the one where I had to infiltrate the spiky haired friend’s house on the richer part of town about some orb or something. Oh nvm, my last save was right after fixing a bridge in a forest. So yeah, pretty early game stuff. But I kinda can see why some won't buy it. It's as classic as a JRPG can be. Well, yeah like every DQ ever. I was planning to buy it. But kinda forget about it.
I kinda see what you're saying. But that's just how it is. People in japan is kinda protective of DQ. And I can bet they'll higher Toyotaro (the guy who's drawing DB Super) to make the new character once Toriyama RIPs. And what the hell is with this posting? Is the feds filtering every posts here?
turn based combat is more difficult to make interesting because it's more abstract, but it can still be fun. Just look at turn-based strategy games, TCGs, or puzzle games. And real-time combat can be bad as well; the modern elder scrolls games, for example, can just devolve into stealth archery or just be busywork.
Ah, a man of supreme cultural palette
not that user but think about it. Action rpgs now are not technical enough, so it boils down to just strafing and rolling. How many videos online make fun of dark souls and similar games? An actual, literal battle in real life would be so fucking difficult because you'd need a mastery of technique with whatever weapons you're using and the opponents you're fighting. That's too much to program and too much to deal with as a player, so developers need to simplify it. If you simplify real time, it easily turns into retard spamming bullshit, desperate rolling as you smash A, etc. Maybe it could be cool if they really, really tried to focus (idk, make an rpg with smash bros melee mechanics and the ai is super good, for example). But we've all seen how retarded action rpgs can be. turn-based just admits those flaws and pulls back, allowing you to direct the battle like a general in an army. It's fun, it's soothing, and instead of being a spamlord retard, you have the opportunity to plan and strategize, thinking moves ahead like a chess game. How far ahead are you thinking in dark souls? Your next faggy invincibility-frame roll? Please negro, check yourself.
Maybe if Square stopped being retarded for once. I was waiting for a better discount on PC, then these dumbasses announced Switch version would have 2x more content. So I'm just not gonna play that game. Bought Coven of Dusk instead.
Learn what an rpg is, you gigafaggot zoomer. Turn based combat emphasizes what your character can do, rather than what you the player can do. You don't know the first thing about video games. Also
stop

spacing,
faggot.
Here's your (You).
When does Dragon Quest get good? Finished I, dropped II, started III yesterday but i don't like the emotionless generated party with no backstory, when does it gets SOULFUL?
5 and 6 on the DS.
I genuinely don't understand why JAPAN likes dragon quest
It is just so fucking boring
I put a couple hours into DQ1 around when hero was announced to finally see what the fuck the hype was about and it was just the world's most perfectly generic fucking rpg.
That's like saying Megami Tensei I is the most perfectly generic fucking dungeon crawler, try the most popular or newer ones you dumbo poster
whats the appeal of dragon quest if you're not a nostalgic japanese salaryman?
>it's another nigger faggot 1 post by this ID bot thread
Nice pasta faggot.
I've got a better question, why does Nintendo try to make DQ a big thing in the west? It's not even theirs but they treat it with care and they even put some money on the marketing unlike SE. DQ keeps selling like shit but Nintendo keep advertising it, I don't get it.
Almost like they want more money or something.
It is a purely mindless game that people play when they are too exhausted by life to think, as is common in japan.
It is really funny watching western DQ fans pretend to be all sophisticated when they are really just playing the JRPG equivalent of Call of Duty.
But the thing is they don't get money. Yeah, they have the publishing rights in the west but all of the DQ's have at most 200k to 500k in the west. According to my calculations, every time Nintendo publishes a DQ game they lose the money SE could have lost (about 8 million if they cost 40 dollars). They keep insisting but it's not making money for them.
Why don't you like proper pluralization?
It didnt sell because its a BAD GAME.
Horrible jrpg, one of the worst I played in recent years and I hate myself for putting hours into it instead of Suikoden 2 that I still have to finish.
>Maybe they just have a larger population of pussies
Why do Americans think typing paragraphs about videogames is intimidating? I can smell you through the screen
its really weird seeing this place filled up with kids whove just started dq games and hate them. i remember a few years ago nobody gave a fuck about dq really, all threads would die instantly. since xi got announced for the switch its been impossible to discuss it without some cunt detailing why he doesnt like the whole series and its actually shit. bizarre
>action rpg
>mash X to perform combo, end it with O for execution move.
>bind buttons to maybe 6 spells, most of which are just higher tiers than the others to autocast for you which is basically more free damage.
>"b-but you get to move!"
lmao there's tons of JRPGs that you can move and attack in, but they give you the option to stop the shit and maybe think out a strategy or change up how the ai will function. Western RPGs is literally "wait" or "kill anything that's 2 inches infront of you." and you end up having to baby sit the AI 90% of the time as they tend to be complete trash.
Wow so different. Oh wait, they are both shitty combat games overall but most western "stories" are just le medieval fantasy elf/orc wank and jrpgs are teens save the world.
Jesus christ what a retard
Once you've played DQ 7 or 8 you don't need to play any others because they are garbage
Because even some of the easiest, least complex RPGs in the world like Persona 3/4/5 have universal combat mechanics and unique boss mechanics that cause the average console retard outside of Japan to have a fucking brain aneurysm, then they blame grinding.

They just don't have an attachment to Dragon Quest
