Tapping is not the same as analogue control. Tapping the throttle results in the throttle wildly going from 0 to 100%, that kind of abuse will easily spin you out in any semi-realistic game. The wheels are receiving high bursts of torque and that will overload their traction. Same for tapping turning keys, as soon as you go for 100% lock your fronts will lose traction and you'll understeer into the nearest guardrail or tree.

You really don't need a wheel for Dirt Rally, it's still on the simcade spectrum like all Codemasters games. As long as you can be precise with the triggers and thumbs you'll be fine, but you can't get away with the common gamepad strat of waggling the stick to go from low turning to maxium turning, you have to be smoother.
