1 has better atmosphere than 2 but everything else was worse. If the smoother movement and overall polish of 2 were retroactively applied to 1 it would be a near perfect game

- new suits
- flying around in hub areas and exploring ship derelicts
- quality of models, animations, textures- overall visuals
- Ellie in 3 was still hot
- outdoor environments gave good vibes (The Thing, Aliens)
- story was pretty good and most of it handled the weight of 3rd installment pretty well. Talking about main plot, not Isaac fighting with new boyfriend, how John Carver was written and other obvious shitty things.

It's really funny how Dead Space and Mass Effect basically had the exact same series progression.

1 was the proof of concept with a bit of jank but perfect atmosphere that sold the world.

2 was a more actiony mixed bag that expanded the scope and cast but was less atmospheric and shoehorned in more waifushit.

3 was the deathblow to the original qualities of the series but mechanically improved upon the action elements of the 2nd game.

The only differences were that ME got one last kick in the balls with Andromeda while DS had the shoehorned multiplayer show up in 2 rather than 3.

I don't agree overly, it just felt like they split weapons from their alt fires and let you mix and match. And since everything used the same ammo pool, it was a bunch of "use what makes sense or enjoy burning through resources in the later levels."

The whole game is a massive At The Mountains of Madness tribute.
It had potential. If Visceral survived and they did a "directors cut" - nixed co-op, wrote the bad love triangle out of the story, removed crafting, made it so the "side missions" didn't feel so copy-pasted - it'd be pretty good. It did a lot I liked, and even improved on Dead Space 2 feeling like it was linearly yanking you by the nose, with more open-ended sections.
Just scuttled by design decisions, not incompetence.

3 is a great game, good horror tps shooter and bad Dead Space.

Just like Splinter Cell conviction is a great game, good stealth-action game and bad Splinter Cell.

Just like Thief 4 is good game, pretty good stealth-action game and bad Thief.

Yeah, the weapon crafting could have used some tweaking. I think what they should have done is split the universal ammo into separate categories. Something like, explosive ammo for weapons that fire rockets and grenade launcher rounds, and energy cells for weapons like the tesla gun and line gun.

I'd say it's the RE3 of the series. Or RE: CVX/RE:0. It doesn't change the fundamentals, adds stuff people didn't like, took some chances, and the reaction is largely "eeeeeh".
