Yes, and honestly it's not great. The fights are too easy, overworld enemies are too easy to avoid, the combat doesn't seem to have any interesting strategies beyond "buff yourself", "debuff the enemy" and "use strongest elemental attacks", the music is straight up trash, the maps are uninteresting to explore and the story so far seems generic as all hell.

Sorry but I just don't get the draw of this game. Xenoblade has fantastic overworld design to fall back on, Bravely Default has interesting and varied builds to mess around with... What does Dragon Quest have? What's its hook? Because from what I've played of the demo, there's just nothing here.

The combat is fun and challenging, one of the few turn based systems where all the tools you have are optimal and encouraged and the subplots in each town are great and loop back into the main quest.

I wonder how much of an impact this has. I think it probably doesn't affect things too much, most players don't know how bad they actually are and many seem to like the stuff invented by the localizations. I played the English demo of XI and there always seemed to be something bugging me, but the worst of it was the Hotto haikus. That place was absolutely awful. I understand getting bored while translating and doing silly shit, I do it too, but the difference is I just show friends, we have a laugh, and then I translate it properly.

Other way around for DQ VII on the 3DS. The only time the Japanese version had MIDI music while the English version had orchestral was with the PS2 version of DQ VIII.

No one in the game has poison/venom defense so you can setups the moment you get it.
Also Greatswords > Dual Wield.

I really liked the QoL changes in the Switch version, and I like what I've read of the changes I haven't yet experienced. If you're a graphics whore, you should consider rearranging your priorities or killing yourself, but if you're not, there's no reason not to get the Switch version.

Erik is a beast, but he's so point starved most of the game that it's best to just main knives. Sylvando has a poison move where he blows a kiss that has a higher chance to proc than the dagger skill, so you can have Erik casting shadow clone and using victimizer every other turn. It isn't until end game that you can unlock Fatal Slash and dual wielding swords outdamages knives.

Also Greatswords are only overtaken by dual wielding swords for a short while before reaching the super bosses and the defense boost of offhanding a shield becomes more important than damage.

I worry about poor quality ports with disgusting frame rate, eternal loadings, etc. After buying about 30 games on the Switch I made the decision never to give preference to this platform over the PC. However, the additions of the Switch version may justify the purchase in this case.

I played the demo for about half an hour. It's not as ugly as I thought it would be, but it's still fairly rough. I'm going to play in 2D mode anyway so it's a moot point.

It seems to be a recurring problem in a lot of jrpgs where bittersweet, but equally satisfying endings get flushed down the drain by the magical true ending that fixes everything and gives everyone a happy ending.
