At risk of being called a fag, I didn't think Gael's bossfight was incredible; good, certainly, but not stellar. I like what they tried to do with him, and the fight was fun aesthetically and I like what it did with in-fight phases rather than the full three-phase fight with Freide and Ariandel, but he wasn't as tough as I felt he should be. I feel like Freide/Ariandel is the spiritual successor to the Manus difficulty curve, which I think Gael was trying to lay claim to both in aesthetic and difficulty. I beat Gael first try, but Freide took me a full morning.

I don't know that I'd say his lore is shit, but it is really underbaked. It had the potential to be super interesting but it failed to give a sufficient rationale for fucking Gael of all people to be the last human to resist hollowing, being there at the end. I think if it went with less of a "POWER OF MY WILL" angle and focused more on Gael as an individual and his strength and utter confidence in eventual victory, it would make more sense once you got there and be more meaningful when you finally shut him down, at the cusp of his victory.
