I went into 2 with high expectations coming off X. I even preordered it because I loved 1 and X so much I was kicking myself for not getting them sooner (or with the special edition, in the case of X). However, 2's characters disappointed me at every turn. I liked Zeke and Pandoria for comedic value, but other than them, and Morag, the cast was very one-note, didn't develop, and barely had any interesting interactions because they just went along with the plot instead of moving it forwards themselves.

I haven’t played Xenoblade, so I’ll table Rex’s chances for now.

ARMS sold well, so it’s bound to get a rep next time. While Spring Man would likely be the next rep because he’s the MC of the game, he sort of feels like the Mario of ARMS - just plain. If they go with an alternate character, I’d say either Min-Min (who won the final ARMS mega-tournament) or Ribbon Girl. Maybe include Dr. Coyle if they want a villain rep as well.

Octolings are likely to be added, as would a representative for the next Pokemon game. A Fire Emblem rep is certainly possible, but honestly I’d think a 3H rep would be like choosing your favorite child - the others would get upset.

Nintendo and Platinum are also on good terms, so I could see Akira from Astral Chain as a rep next time (with both gender alts).

Nagi is probably the hardest I have ever cringed at a video game character. He's that bad.

The sidequests contain more and better character development than in all of 2, though. You can't just discount them because they're optional.

The real reason was because Awakening and Fates released at the time Sakurai was deciding base/DLC characters.
The only exception is Chrom, who became a giant meme and was an Echo anyway.

Smash->Jail (Locks special moves for 5 seconds)
Buster remains, maybe has higher risk-reward ratio
Slightly slower movement and all attacks do more damage/knockback

Hell, he had to be given an extra scene in the manga adaptation because he basically dropped off the face of the map in order to develop the rest of the cast and the world more.
