Going back to my first post, the animation is where most of the money went so you have few characters. Never mind the fanservice, that is a non-issue, it's the management of money that really killed it. Stylized 3D can work and I understand why it was done in 2D but it could have been handled better.

It didn't really flop, not even by fighting game standards. It sold pretty well and got plenty of recognition.
That said, I do remember it not getting much tourney support, so maybe that's what you mean. This. The #1 problem with Skullgirls mechanically was trying too hard to be MvC2 but making it less busted/more balanced by having more mechanics on top of it. The reset meta it created and the near-worthlessness of solo characters in a game with a ratio system bog down a lot of fantastic QoL stuff that fighting games SHOULD have.

Short answer is money. Slightly longer answer is that Autumn Games, the publisher, basically went bankrupt halfway through Skullgirl's development. I think the story behind that is they lost a lawsuit over an entirely different game. As you could imagine, Skullgirls characters are time and labor intensive. They were never going to implement everyone they had concept art for. They would've needed to raise something like 10x the money they got via crowdfunding. As for Skullgirls 2, once Indivisible comes out anything is possible for Lab Zero, but Autumn Games still owns the rights to Skullgirls. There's some bad blood regarding royalties owed to Lab Zero but IIRC Mike Z hasn't ruled out the possibility of working with Autumn again. That said, the onus is 100% on Autumn Games since they own the IP. They aren't bankrupt anymore though, so there is that.

Extension of the necessity of hitconfirms. The ability to react to something punishable with a full combo means you have earned the extra damage that gives you. Certain characters can be balanced around having a ton of tools but only getting good damage from high-execution combos. If a fighting game is smart, then long combos can serve as a means to extend combos into different routes that serve different purposes; a route for max damage, a route for the best oki, and a route for building the most meter.

Combo wank can be bad (see: KOFXIII with its insane Drive ToDs) but longer combos have a purpose in games with better designs.
