How did Raimi manages to get away with this?

Not the NES one, but the MSX versions packed into the HD collection edition of MGS3. I can appreciate what they did at the time, but I don't find they add much to the overall enjoyment of the series that can't be gleaned from the mission overviews that were available in MGS1.

I tried playing the first one and I was bored to tears. I tried pushing though it so I could go to the second one that really looks fucking cool, but never mustered the patience to finish it. Either way I'm sort of spoiled by Ghost Babel and I doubt even MG2 will be as good as that one.
