Let's look at a simple example that most people are familiar with: Ghost in the Shell. Major Kusanagi is, biologically, female. But there is nothing stopping her from putting her ghost into a 'male' body and living that way for the rest of her life. In this scenario, is she still female? Does it even matter?

There may be practical concerns in today's world for retaining a record of someone's birth sex (sex-linked diseases, for example) but when your entire body is disposable and you can swap out pieces or mutations like Legos, I really don't think modern ideas of sex and gender still make sense.
