You can't discount Romero's enthusiasm as a defining factor in shaping Id, but it wasn't really guidance. Id worked when everyone's goal aligned and it didn't need guidance it was doomed to become something else eventually once it grew beyond the founding members because neither of the John's were capable of providing guidance around people who weren't already in lock step with them. Romero proved that at Ion Storm and Carmack didn't do much better at Id, but was at least knew to keep the team small and his goals reasonable.

It's completely true. Have you seen how easy it is to make maps for Doom or Quake? There is a simple map editing tool where you make shapes and slap on textures. For a modern FPS game you need a dedicated artist to model the entire level in a real 3D tool like Maya, "mapping" isn't a thing anymore

it wouldn't, "soul" in art originates from the vision of the human creator. if the automation succeeds in realizing that vision the result will be "soulful". obviously we don't have this kind of technology yet and on the way to it we will see many attempts that don't allow the vision to shine through and therefore are soulless. it'll continue to look like you were right for a long time, unfortunately.

I don't work at all and I understood everything. It was mostly just typical video game tech talk like framerate, input latency, and typical cpu terms, like cpu, gpu, microchip foundries, die shrinks, and transistors.

Many games have procedural generation and the biggest complaint about them is they're boring and lack the appeal of a handcrafted map
You can make complex procedural generators to make more interesting levels but then you're putting as much work in as you would to do it manually

This is me again, watching again, he just talks about the specs of the cars. 5 liter flat 12 in a testarossa, meaning the amount of liters of air the engine produces, and flat 12 is the cylinder count in a flat position, unusual from the typical v12 engines. I'm not talking about procedural generation although it might be a part of it. what if we had superior methods of input? think of how Elon Musk's neural net could change the way an artist creates assets for a video game. suddenly one artist could create way more in the same amount of time. anything that allows one person to get more work done in the same amount of time is how we fix video games. it's not a coincidence that all those great 90s games were made by a small staff and all the modern snoozefests are made by many dozens of people, often hundreds in fact. that's the key difference. the number of mouths to feed directly leads to the need to play it super-safe which results in a boring, generic "product". hell, "product" doesn't even cut it any more. every team hopes to establish a "franchise" with every project they start now.
