There's a shit ton of stuff to explain, so I'll give the basic premise of what the Cold Steel arc was trying to convey, then let people ask how it all ties to everything else in the plot:
So the whole reason all this bullshit is going on in Erebonia is because there's a sentient being called Ishmelga, which was spawned from the Great Power, an entity formed by the merging of the Fire and Earth Sept-Terrion after years of conflict. Ishmelga cast a curse over Erebonia, which allowed it to manipulate causality and induce violent tendencies in people and spur on conflict to further its goals. Its ultimate goal was to resurrect the Great Power, merge with it, and rule the world. To do that, it needed to start the Contest of the Seven between the Awakeners, which would end in one Awakener defeating the others and absorbing the power of the Earth and Fire Sept-Terrion into themselves and their Divine Knight. At that point, Ishmelga would take them over and assume complete control over that power.

On top of everything you posted it pissed me off on a personal level since I'm a dumb waifufag. It absolutely fucked over Altina and her character development from 4. Bringing Millium back made her emotional journey in 3 so cheap. Also she was literally closer to Rean in 3, her ending in 4 was the single most disappointing one. Even characters who had no business getting a romantic ending with Rean got one while we literally took a step backwards in this one.
Even if you don't like her she was still the main heroine from the previous game so it's pretty fucked up to do that to her.

I don't know about you but i had a very easy time with the game, have you been upgrading their weapons in every new town?
Also forging stronger quarts is also a possibility, a passive grind you could use to keep up with levels is to while running during sidequests during the story just fight every enemy group you pass by and you should be around the level of every boss fight, had a easy time with that and never needed to really grind for anything; finished all the bosses on hard without the gamey at delay strats too.
