I feel you. You bring an interesting point too with the loss of custom servers over matchmaking/competitive online. Back then from my experience, for the games that allowed it, we would often try & make our own fun with dumb rulesets or things of the kind. Even in up to about the Late 00s at most, you could still find Randoms messing around harmlessly, trying to get you into whatever fun little game they were doing
In the latest games i've played, that spirit has almost completely died, even its small remnants. Everything is so by the books & the consensus rules so much of the game. People don't even seem to have that much fun anymore, the reaction that comes out the most out of people is frustration.

Smash Bros has exceeded all of my expectations. I can't think of another franchise that hasn't been soiled. I only play /vr/ and a completely new release sometimes.

I can't say yes or no. I don't really care for graphics and I really don't care for HD cinematics or specs, none of that mattered to me as a kid. Yes, games today do have things and features that couldn't be realized back in the 90's. On the other hand, the creative and odd-end games seemed to have declined significantly and indie titles are very hit or miss. I remember when DLC could be obtained by a cheat code, but today's gamer probably couldn't even string that. I remember back in 2007 when every other game being acclaimed was a first person shooter or war sim and everyone was hyping Halo 3 with its bloated marketing. Brawl was overhyped too. That's probably where I noticed the public perception of video games was changing.

I only play older games or indie stuff these days, the only games I can remember from last year were Apex Legends because a couple friends forced me to play it and fucking Deltarune's demo, and that's mostly because of the OST and the Jevil-posting.
Vidya has so much potential, yet we ruin it by constantly talking about politics and micro-transactions instead of paying attention to good games or good devs.

Then why do I enjoy the same games I used to enjoy as a kid even more as an adult, but anything new released is boring garbage?

I can pick up Disney's Hercules, Jumping Flash, Medievil 1&2, crash bandicoot trilogy, Toy Story 2, Rayman 2, Aladdin Nasira's Revenge, Disney's Tarzan, Oddworld, Driver etc. and enjoy the shit out of each game, play them through many times and feel good afterwards, whereas many modern games just leave me empty after sinking in 5-10 hours into them.
It's not even a case of nostalgia because all of these older games are so fucking good, even if you didn't play some of them as a kid, picking them up right now, they'd still hold up.

I miss being able to recognize certain names while playing on my favorite servers, it gave me some sort of community feeling, it was nice to have "that one fucker that does X constantly", that small silent rivalry you had with some random guy in pvp, knowing a couple of guys that you progressed with even if you never really befriended each other or talked much. We have so many players now, but no real ways to interact in a meaningful way, no chatting, no fighting, no tomfoolery, only the places and gameplay enforced by the devs.

As a kid, I always wanted to learn Japanese and play Japanese games in their original form. Now I know Japanese, and Japanese games are great for the most part (with the exception of SE and Konami going to shit). The way Western gaming went was unfortunate, but oh well.

I didn't have expectations as a kid. I just enjoyed the games I liked that were out at the time, without giving much thought to what was coming in the future. I'm disappointed now because now I know how the industry works and I know that I'm supposed to be disappointed in it.
