I can't explain a 401k well because I don't understand it either, but basically it's an account with a company or bank or something of some kind that makes minor investments with your money over time. It's better than just sitting in savings. Usually when working this will be a benefit you can get even part time, and you can put a portion of your paycheck into it automatically each time you get paid.

Example, my job gave me a 401k with a company called Fidelity. Every paycheck I have 5% taken out of my paycheck and added into the 401k, by company matches this amount so if I had $25 taken out of my paycheck, they'd add $25 more to it. Fidelity then invests small amounts of that money on their own to help build my retirement fund.
