If Shovel Knight was WayForward (even if released exactly as it did by Yacht Club) it would have been forgotten about and only have attracted the same audience that Switch Force or Shantae have. I think it might have been a couple things. First is that Donovan might have just been an asshole who only realized his flaws post-mortem. That, or the artifact started to control him like it did Shield Knight later, maybe trying to make Donovan take it so he could become its vessel.

PoS is mostly the same level structure but with some changed parts to account for Plague Knight's abilities and a lot of additional hidden rooms for his collectibles. Also the bosses are mostly the same save for a few that are different for obvious reasons. SoT has completely new level structures and the bosses are all revamped.

I confess I could never get the hang of controlling Plague Knight.

Plague Knight is a completely different character with the same level layouts and bosses and a different story that occurs at the same time as Shovel Knight's. Specter Knight is a prequel with unique levels built for him, and his bosses are the same characters but reworked fights. King Knight seems completely different, with worlds, new bosses, and a card game minigame.

its real easy. just charge up a bomb jump whenever you can. always save your double jump until after bomb jumping, for maximum hang time. Always keep the Vat arcane active at all times so you can use it to both stop yourself midair and refresh your jumps.

Plague of Shadows has mostly the same levels and the exact same hubworld, only differences are:
-You're banned from entering the village, so instead Plague Knight heads underground to his backup lair, the Potionarium.
-Plague Knight controls vastly differently, he has very customizable bombs, his own relics (arcana), and has a double jump. He also has a bomb jump.
-The story is different. Plague Knight betrays the order in order to concoct a very powerful potion, but the ingredients are hard to get: the essences of all the other knights.
-Several new tracks.
-Parts of all the levels are edited slightly to accommodate Plague Knight's new gameplay. Side areas in those levels have been added.

Specter Knight's campaign is pretty different:
-Story is a prequel, takes place before the order was even formed.
-Specter Knight controls like a ninja. He wall climbs and slashes through things midair.
-The hub world went away, and was replaced by a more mega man esque level select inside the tower of fate.
-The levels are pretty different from the originals, and the music got remixed! The levels show an "earlier"version of each of the knights' headquarters. The explodatorium looks like its' half built, pridemoor castle isnt guilded, the lich yard is still inhabited, etc.

So does King Knight take place as a prequel, sequel or at the same time to SK's campaign? I was kind of hoping that it would be after the Enchantress is beaten but it seems like another prequel.

They can be used singularly or pluraly, typically when you don't know their sex or if you don't know their name. It's still fine to say if you know, it's just a little less correct and always has been.
For Example:
"Do you know where that guy ran off too?"
"They went down the road." is a little less precise/correct than "He went down the road" but still valid.
"It" is dehumanizing and incorrect in the situation. You wouldn't say "It went down the road" in response to that question, the only time "it" would be said were if it were an animal/monster/object etc.

But is Dig why King Knight has been seemingly stuck in development hell with complete media blackout for ages? Or did Nitrome do most of the work?

Regardless I am pretty surprised. When I saw Cyber Shadow revealed I assumed it was because King Knight had probably pretty much wrapped up development already. But then King Knight was never revealed anywhere and time just kept flying by.
And now we see this Dig game out of nowhere too? And all they're playing on the stream is the same old Showdown thing they've been fiddling with for ages and they still aren't demo:ing King Knight. Or even this new Dig game.

What are they even doing?
Are we to assume at this point that the developers are all burnt out on Shovel Knight and all want to work on other games already or something? Is it a case of no one at Yacht Club games actually wanting to work on Shovel Knight anymore or what?
Previously I had wondered if they were having financial troubles or something considering everyone just gets Plague, Specter, and soon King Knight for free. Yacht Club is only publishing Cyber Shadow, not developing.
King of Cards is finished but is being held back by showdown and the physical releases.

King Knight took a while because it’s a lot more ambitious than the other campaigns. There’s more levels, more enemies, a ton of new characters, and a whole card game on the side. Dig has only been in development for a year and Cyber Samurai or whatever it is is practically a solo effort that they’re publishing. As for why they aren’t demoing much of KoC? It’s because they don’t want to spoil anything. We’ve seen plenty of the game to get a good understanding of what it’s like. Any more would be overkill. There’s no greater conspiracy going on here.

No one since the 3DS version is getting shit on. But at least they're keeping their promise on King Knight releasing, I was afraid they'd drop it after such a long delay.
