I'll never understand Odyssey. I'm actually one of the people who really liked botw but Odyssey did absolutely nothing for me. Huge fan of 64 and Galaxy and everyone at every level jacks off Odyssey like the second coming of Christ but everything felt unsatisfying to me. Actual platforming levels felt even fewer and far between than sunshine and you spend way too much time relying on the capture mechanic. Which feels really gimmicky since although Mario had a great moveset the level design wasnt built for it and instead wants you to use the far less interesting to control enemies for everything. The difficulty never ramps up either. Even the obligatory final sort hard challenge stage isn't hard outside of the lack of checkpoints. The kingdoms are about the same size as a galaxy stage so don't justify how few there are our how two of them are basically just a boss room. Moons are also too common and too easily rewarded to feel satisfying to collect. My sister whose huge into collectathons ended up with a similar view on them, she said the purple coins ended up feeling more rewarding then the moons did.
Really wish I could have liked it or seen what everyone else saw in it but it was just kinda overall disappointing to me.

Funny, my opinion is pretty much the opposite in every way. A lot of thought went into the capture mechanic and there's a ton of stuff you can do with it, and surprisingly the vast majority of them control really well. The levels worked great for Mario's new moveset and there are several locations you can get to with some effort that feel like the developers didn't intent for you to reach. The first run through isn't very difficult but the pacing is fine, the post game is tougher and some of the moons are a bitch to get and even to find. Overall I love the polish and creativity they put into the game, and how many layers the different kingdoms have with enemy captures and a second visit. Moons remind me a lot of Korok seeds, only a bit more varied and involved (for some), I enjoyed searching for all of them but I got to 500 pretty fast without touching most Kingdoms a second time

The first half of Odyssey I actually wasn't that much of a fan. Some of the moons had platforming too demanding for the transformation you did it with.

There should just be Journalist difficulty mode. Its basically god mode, you kill everything in one hit, you cant die even by falling you will grow fucking wings and fly back if you try and you unlock everything the moment you choose journalist difficulty. I actually ended up getting every single Moon. I feel like it just never gave me what I was looking for. The 3D performing levels are small and pretty rare, almost felt like there were more 2D levels focused on platforming than 3D.
Could just be the particular order / pace I did the game in but it just felt like it was mostly minigames, capture gimmicks, and 2D retro sections. The level design didn't feel anywhere near as good as galaxy and felt more like an emptier sunshine to me. Ended up disappointed by darker side too since it was also mostly capture gimmicks and not really particularly challenging or interesting.
Makes me kinda worried the next game is going to be odyssey 2, because while I love the things you can do with your hat in terms of collection and movement, I feel like the capture mechanic takes away a lot from the game as a whole.

The antagonist is a Scoobie Doo villain and the “whoa so deep” message about the main character and his relationship between his sick wife and the chick on the radio is completely undermined in the very beginning by them giving you the illusion of choice. I dont like JRPGs and unless I have a basic understanding of what people that do like them are into and not then why should I review a JRPG? It doesnt have to be my favorite genre but I have to understand what is expected, for example, I know that my dislike of FFXIII structure with the corridors isnt something that most people will like, its just shit. I dont like the weeb shit on them but the audience for it like weeb shit so my opinion in there is outright useless for people that are actually going to buy the game.
There is another aspect to reviews, something that IGN, Gamespot and other big sites should really push, and that is personal preference. They should really put the reviewer more front and center because after some reviews you can tell if its tastes are similar to yours, giving you a better perspective if that game is good or not for your tastes

There are some baffling level design choices in this game and this is by far the worst one. There's nothing wrong with having an optional power that trivializes some fights, but they made that power pretty much mandatory if you don't want to slog through those first couple of levels. They should've just made buying Guts in the shop part of the tutorial, it's not like you won't have enough to buy it after the intro.

That Alien review is spot on, pacing is terrible, you can only be entertained by the same three enemies for so long, the AI is clearly cheap and unreliable, the game is pure gimmicks that do not amount to a full game.

Thank you for pointing that out, a numerical system does rely on the weight of it's categories. But is it not true that different genres of games require more focus on these criteria than others? For instance, it would be flawed to present story as a criteria, and praise some verbose JRPG, and deny the same points to a shooter that doesn't care about developing a world beyond the context of blowing shit up.

This is why I say a numerical system is fundamentally flawed.

Odyssey may have been a little underwhelming but I still think it shits on BotW. Odyssey at least felt like it was in the same vein as 64 and Sunshine while BotW felt like nothing, 99% of the overworld is absolutely nothing. My favorite part of Zelda games is getting new shit and using it to solve puzzles/open new areas on the map and BotW blows its load in the first area, pretty much everything you get after the great plateau feels extremely mundane in comparison. Now let's talk about the fuckin shrines, what were they thinking? Oh wait I know, "instead of having real dungeons we'll just chop them up spread 120 dungeon rooms around the map with the exact same themes in each one!". Also those shrines where you literally just go in and grab a spirit orb, just why? At that point they're just fucking heart pieces, just give me a heart piece. When you enter the forgotten temple expecting some cool dungeon and it's literally just a hallway with a shrine plopped at the end it's just fucking jarring.
