Getting into ME3 I felt like ME2 didn't matter at all, most of your team has fucked off to different areas, all the bonding and relationship building means fuckall and the suicide mission was a sidequest

Then Im getting characters like Beef McLargeHuge shoved in my face and terrible graphics and on rails tutorials, and the writing was actually so cringey I turned the game off after being 3 hours in and never looked back.

This. What is normal for a human is abhorrent for a Krogan; they're different species with different outlooks. If the Genophage had simply caused 90% of Krogan women to become sterile, it might not have been so bad; but seeing so many of your potential children being born dead is a terribly harrowing thing, especially for a militant culture which expects to lose a significant portion of its people to conflict. I can't blame the Krogan for slipping into a nihilistic mindset as a result.

It's always worth remembering that the Krogan were forcibly uplifted before they were ready. The Salarians gave nuclear weapons to cavemen, then everyone acted surprised when the cavemen started doing caveman things.

Not him, but that was a cool DLC. Hammerhead was kinda clunky and it was missing teammate interactions, but other than that it was a cool sidestory, and seeing the kid again in 3 is probably one of the most emotive moments in the whole saga.

The game is such a clusterfuck on so many levels.

Best combat in the series. Enemy variety made every class feel both fun and challenging. All the weapon were interesting and felt different, and the omniblade/biotic smash was cool.
In terms of story, Tuchanka/Rannoch were great. Probably the only good major story bits. The continuation of certain romances were good (Tali, Liara, Garrus) and I liked how your companions could be found in various different places in the Normandy AND how talked to each other. It felt like they were actual friends/comrades.
HOWEVER, the way they handled Cerberus, the Illusive Man, and the Reapers was absolute dogshit. The lack of any real side quests other than 'go here, collect this' pissed me off ESPECIALLY with the constant map reapers. The fact that they introduced a deus ex machina instead of pooling together the connections Shepard made throughout the last three games was a fucking sin.

Now I want to replay the trilogy while trying to make the companions as OP as possible.

I just noticed that Mass Effect 2 save files... expire. That's the only way I can explain it. I tried to restart ME3 with my previous character but had to retry from the Suicide Mission autosave to get a new file since the original completion file was mysteriously missing. What happened next is even more weird. Mordin and Grunt were dead in the suicide mission even though I had done everyone's loyalty missions. So when you keep old Mass Effect save files on your computer, they slowly get rancid and produce sub-optimal outcomes when opened. I wouldn't be surprised if the next thing it tells me is that Wrex died on Virmire when I've literally never had a save where he dies.

Yes. If you ignore the abysmal, series-ruining ending, ME3 is a much better game than ME2.

The gameplay is fantastic (whereas ME2 does not hold up)
The general story beats and characters are better written.
We were told our choice would effect the fate of the galaxy, and that was a lie, but when you actually look at all the ways ME3 takes and uses your data from the first two games, it's staggering.

It's major mistake is that it fucks up all the lore and logic that was carefully set up in the first games, especially ME1. That, in turn, is part of what led to the awful ending. They cared more about making a story that would hit the proper emotional beats, rather than making a story that actually makes sense. Which makes it an incredibly entertaining game, right up until everything falls apart.

for some reason I feel like that, while the ending is bad, it doesn't retroactively kill the series for me. especially if you go with destroy

On paper Andromeda was the perfect scam. A new, mostly unpopulated galaxy that is mostly procedurally generated. Of course the technology didn't actually work so they had to shoehorn it into a more "normal" Mass Effect at the last minute, and it ended up being even trashier than EA intended.

I've had it happen before. The last time only Legion died. Though his death wasn't registered until ME3, his corpse wasn't visible in the suicide mission. The only change I've made now is that I finally got the DLC for ME3 because for the first time ever EA actually put it on discount. It seems to have wiped my ME2 completion save so I couldn't start with that character and that character's autosave got fucked and killed random team members for no reason. Now I figured out that I had saved with that character in ME3 after Mars right in the beginning so I can start there. And whaddya know, no names of dead Mordin or Grunt on the ship wall. Because it's a continuation of a ME2 save where they survive. That ME2 save just disagrees nowadays.
