To add to this, i wish to point towards the perspectivism of rape. The context of rape within our current society is essentially what makes it so traumatic. In other times and societys rape was not as charged with negative characteristics as it is now, so in return people were not nearly traumatized by being raped as is now the case.

It is true that today rape is a very traumatic experience but it is constituted as such not by the nature of the act as is, but by the frame society provides to it. Which has an interesting afterthought attached to it: Woman who are raped are much more stigmatized now, than it used to be the case. It is the sigma of being a "woman that has been raped" that leads to all the emotional and psychological upheaval following it.

This is why woman are who are very neurotically engaged in some of supposedly leftists strains of thought popular at places like berkeley etc. feel terribly raped even by "predatory gazes" or just being denied by a man etc. - The traumatic dimension is entirely in how society narrates rape.

The act itself does not warrant the hystery at all - which does of course not mean that it's not a crime and worse than beating someone up.
