What's so good about this game besides the girls?

You don't need to turn your brain off for the story, it's genuinely fine. Extremely slow going between Chapter 2 and Chapter 5, but fine.

Music, Combat, pretty areas with lots of little things to explore. I've played it through four times at this point and I'm still finding things I never saw before.

Combat is probably the biggest reason though, almost rhythm game like and learning when enemies do big moves so you can cancel the damage with Blade Combos or your level 4 special feels good. Building up orbs for big chain attack damage. Crazy big fun. Honestly, if Xenoblade didn't have it's real time combat and were instead like FF or DQ. I wouldn't give it much time.

So, since this is the new Xeno thread. How are your current playthroughs going? Just got to level 4 merc. I really forgot how tedious trying to get to level 5 was. The Malos fight was great, and incorporated the mechs far better than the maingame's final boss having Aion awkwardly stand around and get hit by the party, but the Gort fight was a wet fart (aside from the great music, Mariam Abounnasr is based). It felt awkwardly shoehorned in to the plot, and the game won't even let you die.
I wished the ending had actually gone up to Lora's death and the final fight had been Jin going apeshit on the Indoline soldiers after becoming a Flesh Eater, or something.
Torna overall was underwhelming in the aspects you mentioned, but the ending segment was overall pretty good. The rest of the DLC should've been more like it.

I think that's the one around the time Lora gets knighted. A bunch of sidequests only open up after that point, and from what I remember, there aren't actually enough available to get to the level you need to be before that. If you were just doing them all the moment they showed up anyways, you probably didn't notice that raising the community level was required to advance the story.

It took me until my second playthrough to realize that all of her voice lines change to reflect her becoming less robotic sometime around chapter 4.
The game was surprisingly subtle with her development in that way. It doesn't really try to hammer in the whole 'robot becoming more human' thing super hard, it just happens.

The story gets genuinely amazing after Chapter 5 (10 chapters total) the the DLC expansion is Kino. The gameplay is fun and gets better the further you go into it. The music is great throughout, and the art design of the environments is nice. The game is filled with soul as well. There are lots of nitpicks throughout, it isn't perfect and has lots of flaws- but despite that, it is still the most satisfying game I played in 2017, and it was more satisfying than any game I played in 2018 as well.

New weapons not obtained via story are obtained via a gatcha system. These weapons are also characters with their own stories and quests, which you miss out on some of unless you grind an unholy amount or are blessed by the RNG gods.

The combat system is poorly explained by the tutorials, leading to many players not understanding many systems until the end game. The combat system is also mostly locked down until you finish Chapter 3, during those first 3 chapters, the combat is much less interesting due to you being restricted to less than half of what the combat system has to offer.

Certain mechanics blow, such as the mercenary mission system, where you send people to do jobs, then wait real time for them to come back. Some sidequests feel like filler. Certain locations in the game are more fun to explore than others.

The story has some pacing issues during Chapter 2 through Chapter 5. The story isn't bad here, and it is worth it in the end, because it takes it's time establishing characters, world building, and focusing on party member relationships that all leads to massive pay off in exciting events post Chapter 5, but it's hard to not feel like not much is happening during chapter 2 through 5 outside of a small handful of key, climatic events.

X has the second best combat, the worst story, and the best exploration by a massive amount. It also has the most freedom and the most customization and the best side content, but the worst main quest.

1 has a good story and very likable characters. It also has the best pacing and the first half of its story is perhaps the most engaging chunk of story in the franchise. It also has by far the best english voice performance in the series. Other than that, the game is weaker than the other two games in both combat and exploration and side content.

I have to almost pretend Torna doesn’t exist because what it showed wasn’t nearly as great as what was implied through the cutscenes in the main-game. The Aegis War and Amalthus are too lame in Torna, and it spent too much time meandering with Mythra, Jin and Lora in ways that never mattered. The best part about it was Malos boss theme being a fantastic remix off Amalthus boss theme.

X's combat is stupidly broken and is very imbalanced. Despite having more abilities overall and more stuff on your hot bar at once than in 2, you have less viable strategies overall, and most strategies in X boil down to "what broken way will I melt this super boss in 10 seconds or less". 1 and 2 can also be broken, but 2 has the most satisfying power curve and it feels the most deliberate and expansive in viable strategies you can use. 2 also doesn't require as much excessive grinding to utilize it's strategies, where as everything in X beyond the basics requires grinding augments for hours, which comes with it's own share of massive QOL failures.

actually I think MGS2 is a big brained masterpiece, it's only failing was that Kojima did not have the balls to keep the cutscenes of arsenal gear crashing into NYC and the American flag falling onto Solidus corpse in the game after 9/11 happened. And I guess having an editor so that some of the earlier codec conversations did not drag for as long as they did, or were presented with cutscenes instead of codec for more visual story telling.

Onto the story in X, it isn't just bad because there is less story- I'd actually view that as a plus. In fact, I think the structure of less story in the mainquest while having meatier stuff spread throughout the side content is the best possible structure for an open world game of that type, so kudos to X on that. The issue is that the main story in X is just poorly, poorly written most of the time, and presented even worse. Many cutscenes consist of static camera angles of characters expositing back and forth with blank, expressionless faces and almost no animation what so ever. Tatsu jokes make up a stupid proportion of the story as well, and he barely evolves as a character, making him by far the worst nopon character in the series. The cinematography and writing can literally be compared directly to the Star Wars prequels, and Tatsu is it's Jar Jar

If you wanted me to gripe about every single issue I have with the game, I definitely could and the list is quite extensive, to name a few:
-Torna's ending completely skipping over Lora's death was pathetic and weak
-The Gort fight felt incredibly unsatisfying and should have been more difficult in terms of gameplay.
-Pyra became an entirely meaningless character after chapter 3 and was quite literally just "inferior Mythra"
-The grind to max affinity charts, get the equipment you want, and max out the party is grueling and largely unfun if you're doing it right.
-The blade system is genuinely garbage and encourages players to use the blades the game hands you, which leads to very little variation in playthroughs.
-Rex never was a satisfying main character and all of his growth happened way too late.
-Amalthus was a great villain in theory, but the reveal of his true form was unimpactful because it was within the last 5 or so hours of gameplay that it was revealed that he was a villain. (Even though the game does a poor job hiding it)
-Tora is fucking useless in the plot outside of his mini-arc lol
I feel like the game largely does things right though, which is why I praise it in a lot of aspects overall

I'm trying to place that, but the scene before that was Tora explaining what happened to his dad and grandpa and then when they were in the bath it was a pretty standard reaction. Nia was surprised because Mythra had already made it clear she didn't want to be out, Nia comments on her body, clearly just trying to make small talk because the situation with her was already a little awkward and Nia knows absolutely jack shit about her to even start anything and then she wants to get out.

I guess I am just more use to a hotspring scene involving the boys trying to take a peek or whatever, so it was a nice change of pace to actually have a quiet moment where the characters could be established just a bit more. Funny that I wanted more scenes like that, since XC1 was so good as those little interpersonal moments. XC2 really dropped the ball with the majority of it's H2Hs on that front, lots of comedy, some world building, but very little just conversations. Even trying to use them to bolster up the Blades didn't feel that good. I hope XC3 has a smaller cast.

It does kind of lose it's surprise when you already have a trap character. Also, I just couldn't even begin to suspect such a thing since Mythra would have been embarrassed. She doesn't deal well with stuff like that and was even shown that with the Inn scene. It would have felt inconsistent if she's willing to forgive Nia for lying about their gender and sleeping in the girls room all this time and flashing a dong in her face.

I trust Japan to use "sudden DONG" as pure comedy, there isn't going to be a "I understand and that's ok." with that kind of stuff.

She's still 'young'. Though I guess Flesh Eater aging might be a bit different from a humans normal aging. They might not grow any and just deteriorate. Minoth was already an adult when he substantiated and obviously when he would have become a Flesh Eater. Then you have Jin, who looked like he never changed at all. It's hard to tell what is because of the Ether baths or Cole's disease. I would say I hope that she grows up, but then some people like her just as she is now, so that would crush that.

Funny that while it could be interpreted as her being jealous, I found her apprehension to be the fact that Mythra has already been shown to have a lot of power and Nia didn't know how different she was from Pyra. One wrong comment could mean getting blasted and she probably knew about her previous violent out burst from wandering into Rex's room. So she chooses something she thinks is safe, being submissive and complimenting her body. Her ears perk right up after Mythra explains why she wanted to take the bath in the first place.

I'm actually surprised that they don't interact more often. I think I even got an after battle dialog that I have never heard from those two, but I was in Japanese and I don't remember exactly. I know it wasn't the usual Nia berating her for going too hard on the power though. The relationship between Nia, Pyra and Mythra is something they need to show more of, she's a pretty good friend.

Chapter 4 gets too much flak for its first 1/4th, which is admittedly filler. Everything Mor Ardain and onwards is good, with the ending dungeon and boss fights being great.

Seriously, end of chapter moments were almost all amazing, with the exception of 4 and 8. 4's is just ok, but feels like it's too much of a transition, since 4's entire chapter, while important to the story later, feels like filler when you are doing it. 8's just ends abruptly, no fan fare or anything, no real boss. Just walk down this path a bunch, get cutscenes and then finally the chapter ends. Feels like 8 got chopped up a lot in it's final cut.

Chapter 4 is only bad for like 1h30 while you recover Roc. Then it's excellent the moment you set foot on Mor Ardain up to the end. Which is like 85% of the chapter. Yes. It's a one time purchase for everything. Really nice too, since most of what they made wasn't even originally planned. They were just going to do the three DLC blades and that was it, but then hit us with NG+, tons of free items and Torna.

I remember the buildup for the DLC. And then the full blown Torna Trailer at E3. I also remember how back in December 2017, ESPECIALLY after the letdown that was BotW's DLC, we expected 1 Rare Blade (which is what they promised), a few shitty quests, a hard mode as for their "challenge" promise, and maybe a 2h30 bonus chapter. And then Monolith delivered.

Game is beautiful despite of hardware it's on. Music is godtier. Combat is challenging and fun af tho confusing at first and poorly explained. The story is mostly anime trash but the characters carry it. I hate the weeb style and fan service but overall it's a worthy successor to the first game

Yeah, I remember all the rage when two different patches were delayed 2 weeks because of unforseen circumstances. They worked to the last hour both times, before finally saying about 30 minutes before the patch was to go out that it wasn't happening. That was a long wait for NG+, but felt so good when it finally happened.

Challenge mode was probably even better though, the datamine showing that it was going to be Shulk and Fiora got everyone hype and I remember posting their after battle dialog and having it called "Nice fanfic".

I'm actually rather surprised at how much the accessories matter more to things. Being level 1 and destroying max level super bosses is something that wouldn't happen in other games.

It makes me sad to watch people fail at the game over and over at various points. Not even from failure to update gear, or keeping their levels up, but just because half of the battle mechanics are ignored. I think the last two playthroughs I watched, the guy never switched his Blade once. Just used Pyra all the time and then Mythra and that was it. He only switched to do Blade combos and then sometimes switched to Roc for Smash.

That could be a reason, yeah. But if I'm not wrong, /pol/ also have poster's IDs, and I can't think of a reason why.
