This. It's pretty obvious they had a lot planned for the Black Eagles route but had to cut out the fat for time-related reasons, and the same could be said for the Church route as well since it's literally Claud's story but with a different skin & final boss
Not to mention what appears to be cut plans for BL having a secondary route as well

BE exist because pre-release material teased you would command each lord during a whole journey and after what happened with Fates they didn't wanna take any chances
As for Church? Uh...maybe they predicted El would be super controversial so they made that route as a backup plan to make sure everyone would be satisfied

Played all 4 routes. She’s an anti-villain in her own route that dips into outright villainy in other routes without Byleth’s guidance.
It’s kinda the entire point of the branching storylines that the lords worst habits come to full display when you don’t side with them that eventually leads to their respective downfall.

What the fuck is with this story, man? Here I am, spending month after month in my comfy monastery with my loving friends, teaching smiling students, recruiting friends, and falling for Edelgard. Then, all of a sudden, she decides to just betray the wonderful peace that is present in the land and start a war, and next thing you know everyone is fucking killing each other. Once all friends, you're now murdering your former extended family, and all for what? Sure, I'm skipping through conversations quick, but it still feels like shit just hits the fan out of fucking nowhere and Edelgard just seems like an extremely bloodlusty evil cunt.
Fun game but the story is completely disjointed if you ask me, it's like Dany in the final season of GoT.

Realistically it is probably content for the obvious DLC content that has been in every game since Awakening at this point. They may not have the entire scenario material in there but occams razor points to DLC unlock.
