I noticed that Scathe is an instant, so I started to use right after every other spell. It kind of makes the pauses between castings longer but I hope the damage is increased?

Don't make a habit of it. Try using scathe only if you have to move and can't cast fire. Later you won't be using it at all. Your go-to damaging spell is fire, and fire II in aoe situations.

Only use it if you have to move a fair distance and you have no procs

Tha't only makes sense when you have to move right afterwards
