Geno is still rather unlikely, and I will definitely not be surprised if he doesn't get in, but there is something I'd like to bring up.
One, the DLC lineup was announced completed on November 6th through a tweet from Sakurai him self, while the news that Smash Ultimate had gone gold started circulating around November 14th.
This does leave some time for content to be removed if some of the DLC lineup had already appeared in the game, thought it is rather short, not impossible though.
However, the final direct took place on the 1st of November, and a trace of Geno was already in there. While his spirit was absent, he was shown as an icon for Online Arenas. This could mean cutting him out would be super suspicious, and would be avoided IF they decided he should be in, to not arouse suspicion.
They would not want to take anything out after the game had gone gold since that would mean cartridges, that would have the non-patched version, would show the cut content still there, making it much easier for people to find.
Though, still, this is only a pipe dream. I'm really doubtful we'd get another Square Enix character, Banjo's pretty much a "For Nintendo Fans" character since his games were Nintendo 64 hits, and all this talk about a "Bonus Character" is just blind hope. Considering Ultimate had less new characters than Smash 4, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up having less DLC characters as well. The Pass plus Piranha Plant puts us at 6, just one below Smash 4 DLC.
I'm saying this because I think it's all interesting to think about, even if most of it won't end up anywhere. Likely all the DLC characters will be franchises that wouldn't have had any representation in base game anyway.
