The games who did that always end up being the highest point of their franchise, be it Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, Golden Sun 1 & 2 or Soul Reaver 1 & 2 among others.

That was a GBA game, a console that had an active and extremely advanced emulation scene during the console's lifetime. It was more than easy to play both for free, damn, I was like 8 or 9 when I downloaded everything to make the first one work on PC mere months after release.

Not the same guy, but when you are a kid and you don't have income and your parents are relatively poor, to the point where they can't afford buying video games for you, piracy is the only option.

It was novel to me that a game so heavily story focuesd and big could fit on a handheld device was cool. Even though I played it on an emulator because getting a GBA as a kid was out of the question.
I tried replaying it recently, and it's a lot worse than I remembered.

Anyways, Golden Sun was a pretty middling RPG series and there's no reason for Nintendo to revive it when they have other RPGs like Xenoblade or Pokemon to crank out.
